Parallel Session: Translating Practice Theory Into Consumer Research With Coherent Research Strategies, Yoon Lee, Amrul Asraf Mohd- Any, Norbani Che-Ha

International Conference on Marketing

This article contributes to the underexplored methodological issues of translating practice theory into empirical consumer research. Practice theory conceptualises consumption as meaningful outcomes of social accomplishments which decentres the traditional influential roles of consumer emphasizes the performative dimension of the doings, saying, and material objects. Because consumers involved with practices are treated merely as „carriers‟, the analysis focus is shifted from consumer to consumption practice. However, practices are difficult to access, observe, measure or represent because practices are hidden, tacit, and often difficult to articulate. These challenges and specifically methodological issues of social practice theory are seldom acknowledged and addressed. …

The Effects Of Review Prohibition Periods On Video Game Consumer Purchasing Decisions, Richard J. Applin Nov 2016

The Effects Of Review Prohibition Periods On Video Game Consumer Purchasing Decisions, Richard J. Applin

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Video game developers typically prohibit media outlets from publishing reviews of upcoming video games until some specified date. This study hypothesizes that review prohibition periods that give consumers relatively little time to digest reviews result in consumers being more likely to have a negative perception of an upcoming game – thus, resulting in lower initial sales. To test this, a number of video game releases from the past decade are considered in order to model the extent to which initial sales of a game are a function of review prohibition periods while holding a variety of other variables constant. The …

Inorganic Growth In The Organic Food Industry: Examining Barriers To Entry And Economic Rents, Jaime Elizabeth Staengel Nov 2016

Inorganic Growth In The Organic Food Industry: Examining Barriers To Entry And Economic Rents, Jaime Elizabeth Staengel

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Recently in the organic food industry, more lines of organic food are being introduced in stores as demand for organic products continues to grow. The organic food industry has witnessed high price premiums in the past which, according to economic theory, would in a perfectly competitive market attract entry until those price premiums decreased to the point where economic profits were zero. However, the USDA’s National Organic Certification Cost Share Program, or NOCCP, was introduced in its current form in 2009 and offers reimbursement for farmers who are already certified with certification or recertification costs for their organic farming operation. …

The Effects of Charities on Rural Economic Development: An Analysis of the Outcomes of Charity Involvement and the Reduction of Local Economic Growth

Joshua Drouin Dr. David Eaton

This research examines the impact of charities and NGOs on economic development in areas served by the charitable groups. We will look at both long term NGO and charitable involvement, as well as disaster related efforts. By drawing on the comparisons we can empirically test the Samaritan’s Dilemma put forth by James Buchannan. This hypothesis suggests that while charity actions can help in the short term, they can lead to long term …

Does Gentrification Help Or Harm A Community?, Hannah Sparkman Nov 2016

Does Gentrification Help Or Harm A Community?, Hannah Sparkman

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Gentrification is the process of renovating and improving housing and business districts so that it conforms to the middle-class taste. Gentrification is most frequently affecting predominantly black neighborhoods across the United States. This phenomenon is claimed to be the cause of the displacement of residents in poorer communities and of a cultural shift in neighborhoods with deep rooted histories. It could also be the case that gentrification is mainly hurting the long-time residents of these neighborhoods rather than hurting the actual neighborhoods themselves. Research on this topic includes, but is not limited to, various demographic data including before and after …

Research On Problem Gambling Websites, Chang Boon Patrick Lee Jun 2016

Research On Problem Gambling Websites, Chang Boon Patrick Lee

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

This is a continuation of a series of studies on problem gambling websites. It has been noted in prior studies that one avenue problem gamblers might look for help was to go online to perform a web search. Online help is practical as help can be located immediately and this can help to ease the gamblers’ concerns that they are left alone to handle their own problems. While there are some anecdotal evidences regarding the success of problem gambling websites, there have been few empirical studies that relate directly to the perceptions and usefulness of the websites for the problem …

Optimal Strategy For Gambling Pools, Aaron C. Brown Jun 2016

Optimal Strategy For Gambling Pools, Aaron C. Brown

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

In gambling pools, entrants submit predictions and the prizes are awarded to the prediction or predictions closest to actual outcomes. Some well-known examples are football pools (both the global and American game versions), toto, NCAA March Madness bracket pools and horse racing tournaments. For small pools with complete information about outcome probabilities, exact game theory optimal solutions are straightforward to compute. If there is also complete information about the number and strategy of other players, optimal exploitive strategies are even easier to derive. These problems have been treated in the literature.

This paper argues that the complete information approaches are …

Regulatory Barriers In The Field Of Gambling: How Much Virtuality Can A Bet Take?, Peter Naessens Mr. Jun 2016

Regulatory Barriers In The Field Of Gambling: How Much Virtuality Can A Bet Take?, Peter Naessens Mr.

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Bets are a special type of game of chance. In a certain sense, you could think of all games of chance as a bet (bet that the roulette ball comes to rest in number 7, betting on the correct result in the lottery etc.), but most countries have implemented a categorisation. A categorisation that is not only under pressure online, but just as much in the real world with the introduction of virtual bets.

In Belgium, virtual bets were accepted because bets are highly dependent on events, and players also like to make a bet when no events are taking …

The Norwegian state owned company Norsk Tipping is a pioneer in the gambling indusrty with its secure player identification and mandatory registered play across all channels. Knowing who your player is and having a strong link between the player and his consumption of games across all channels (land based, EGM, web and mobile) is an important premise for having a credible responsible gaming platform.

Norsk Tipping introduced in 2009 EGM’s with both pre commitment tools and maximum loss limits. In 2014 we introduced our Internet casino with probably the best responsible gambling platform in the world, including mandatory loss limits. …

This legislation permits casinos and slot parlors in Massachusetts under the regulatory auspices of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC). Section 71 of the Expanded Gaming Act requires the MGC to establish an annual research agenda to assist in understanding the effects of casino gambling in Massachusetts and in minimizing the negative impacts. Research activities launched thus far include a comprehensive study of the social and economic impacts of casino gambling in Massachusetts (SEIGMA), a cohort study …

"Gravity Models" Applied To Projections For New Casinos: Techniques And Results, Will E. Cummings Jun 2016

"Gravity Models" Applied To Projections For New Casinos: Techniques And Results, Will E. Cummings

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

All developers of new casinos prepare, or have prepared for them, projections for the likely gaming-revenue performance of those casinos; in many cases; regulatory authorities in North America also require or commission independent third-party assessments of such performance. These projections are very frequently based on "gravity models," applying techniques pioneered by Reilly and Huff to analyze other retail activities in relation to the geographic distribution of competitors and potential customers. In this paper, I review roughly 80 examples of such applications from recent casino-licensing procedures in the U.S., and compare their results.
