Childhood Health And Household Income, Patrick Malone
Childhood Health And Household Income, Patrick Malone
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Health Economics literature is rich with studies that find a positive association between childhood health and family income. This relationship is also known as childhood health and income gradient. Several other studies also find that this gradient becomes steeper as children age. This research paper empirically reexamines this phenomenon using 2009-2012 data from the National Health Interview Survey. While the study finds the existence the gradient effects, it finds the gradient to be flatter than those found earlier studies.
Female Genital Mutilation In Egypt (Compared To Burkina Faso), Adiroopa Mukherjee
Female Genital Mutilation In Egypt (Compared To Burkina Faso), Adiroopa Mukherjee
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Female Circumcision, also called Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), is a traditionally rooted process involving the partial or complete removal or alteration of healthy female genitalia for non-medical reasons. While there are no proven health benefits of the practice there are several serious health risks associated with it. The practice is usually carried out on girls between infancy to fifteen years of age. About 101 million girls and women suffering the consequences of FGM – out of the estimated 140 million worldwide – are in Africa. (WHO, No. 241) This paper specifically focuses on two countries on the African continent – …

Body Dissatisfaction And Males: A Conceptual Model, Mitch Primus
Body Dissatisfaction And Males: A Conceptual Model, Mitch Primus
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Within society it appears that dissatisfaction with one’s body is seen as a female-exclusive problem. However, limited research on men and body dissatisfaction suggests that men do experience body dissatisfaction, and these rates are increasing over time. The present literature review seeks to tie together consistent themes seen within these studies, and proposes a model based on these connections that may explain the growth in prevalence rates over time. Two theories, threatened masculinity theory and self-discrepancy theory, are also applied within the model. The model presented within this review can help give new direction to future research on men and …
Differences In The Identity Formation Process Of American Indian Adolescents In Urban And Reservation Contexts, Irene Churchill
Differences In The Identity Formation Process Of American Indian Adolescents In Urban And Reservation Contexts, Irene Churchill
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Currently, the majority of American Indians live in more urban and metropolitan environments. The differences in the way identity develops for American Indian adolescents is compared between growing up in an urban context and a reservation context. Two models are explained and applied to American Indian adolescents in these two settings, Oppedal’s Acculturation development model and Phinney and Baldelomar’s Cross-cultural Identity Status Model. According to the Acculturation development model, American Indian adolescents living on reservations likely have higher levels of interaction with their minority culture, therefore having higher levels of enculturation. Additionally, American Indian adolescents living in urban areas likely …
Responding To The Global Ecological Challenge: The Persuasive Power Of A Local Approach, Iris A. Burniece
Responding To The Global Ecological Challenge: The Persuasive Power Of A Local Approach, Iris A. Burniece
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Climate change threatens to impact our planet in ways that will have far-reaching effects on both human populations and the ecological foundations humanity depends on for its survival. The urgent task of reforming environmental policy has proven to be rather complex, which is in large part due to the abrasive relationship between the transboundary character of ecological problems and the inherent sovereignty of states. On the international level, the UN strategy has focused on multilateral treaties; although, it has failed to produce any real affect due to institutional weaknesses. States pursuing their own variants of environmental reform have—at least in …
Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Food-Waste Composting Program At Umm, Alicia Beattie
Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Food-Waste Composting Program At Umm, Alicia Beattie
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
As costs of landfilling and incinerating waste rise, many campuses are beginning to consider alternatives for dealing with food waste generation. In August of 2012, the University of Minnesota, Morris began composting its food waste and food-soiled paper using the turned windrow method. While hailed as a sustainable alternative, with benefits including reduced need for chemical fertilizers, water, and pesticides, higher crop yields, revitalization of poor soils, avoidance of methane and leachate generation in landfills, pollution prevention, and extension of landfill life, many costs are also incurred with the composting alternative ranging from the need to purchase organics collection bins …
