Mother attending to appropriate child behavior and accompaning changes in appropriate child behavior were measured to assess the effects of various instructional conditions. Several appropriate behaviors for a group of child subjects were measured con currently under various stimulus conditions using interval recording procedures. Studies dealing with the use of space have been concerned primarily with territoriality, the way man perceives space through his senses, and with the manner by which culture affects the location of persons in space. This study, like others, falls under the rubric of spatial ecology in that it deals with the occupation of space. Social scientists have long been concerned with the relationships between mental disorder and various sociocultural factors, such as, social economic status, ethnic background, sex, age, and marital status. Until quite recently, the majority of studies that have investigated these relationships have defined cases of mental disorder solely in terms of whether or not an individual was in psychiatric treatment (see Faris and Dunham, 1939; Rose and Stub, 1955; Hollingshead and Redlich, 1958).

A Comparison Between Self-Paced And Instructor-Paced Instructional Systems, Laura Lee Winter

Two college level systems of instruction derived from basic behavioral principals were compared. Community college students enrolled in two sections of an introductory psychology course served as subjects. Students in one section experienced a self-paced system of instruction. Students in the second section went through the course under an instructor-paced system of instruction. Students in the self-paced section received higher course grades and performed better on unit quizzes. However, the final examination performance for the two groups was about the same. Suggestions for further research are given.

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau pointed out in 1968 that some seventy percent of Canadian foreign policy is directly affected by the relationship of Canada and the United States. Trudeau expressed hope that ways could be found to derive maximum independence from the remaining thirty percent. At the same time, Trudeau pointed out the need to decrease the presence of the United States in Canada's foreign policy. One of the ways Trudeau proposed to meet these objectives was the expanded use of countervailing forces. Operant And Classical Conditioning Of Single Units In Area 18a Of The Rat’S Cortex, Francis E. Butler

The effect of the previous history of a single unit on its present firing pattern was studied using classical and operant conditioning. The units were in area 18a of the rat's cortex. It was found that there are polymodal units in that area. The firing pattern can be changed using classical conditioning. The rate of firing can be increased one standard deviation above the mean rate by reinforcing with brain stimulation. The rate can also be changed one standard deviation below the mean rate. The Shaping Of Verbal Imitation And Multiple Effects Of Aversive Schedules For Controlling Inattention In An Infant, Leta Hunt Secker

A six-month-old infant was conditioned to imitate four verbal cues presented by an adult experimenter by using food as a reinforcer. Aversive schedules (escape-avoidance of, or punishment with a loud buzzer) were then introduced to suppress inattentive behavior. Inattention defined as looking away from the investigator, crying, rate of vocalizations, and accuracy of imitations were measured. Three conclusions of the experiment were: 1) verbal imitation can be shaped and maintained through positive reinforcement; 2) the use of aversive schedules is not necessarily beneficial for the performance of the imitative task, or for the general well-being of the child.

A basic question in the study of mental illness has been whether mental patients were victims of society or manipulators of their own careers. Four hypotheses were developed to investigate the manipulative aspect of this question. Patients were selected from three different mental institutions: a state hospital, a Veteran's Administration Hospital, and a private church-related hospital. The patients' records and a group-administered battery of test instruments provided the data used to test the hypotheses. Only one of the hypotheses was supported and the basic question remained unanswered. Lack of support for the remaining three hypotheses was not seen as conclusive …
