Effects Of Relative Heterogeneity Of Competence In Peer-Tutoring Dyads, Meredith Dawson Argyropoulos Aug 1980

Effects Of Relative Heterogeneity Of Competence In Peer-Tutoring Dyads, Meredith Dawson Argyropoulos

Masters Theses

Students in a high school English class received simple instructions before and during participation in brief daily reciprocal tutoring sessions. Three levels of competence were established on the basis of spelling scores obtained on a group-administered standardized achievement test. Dyad members were twice unlike-paired and once like-paired in competence during the experiment, producing six competence during the experiment, producing six competency permutations. Differential assignment of instructional units after pretesting assured that scores reflected individual gains rather than individual competence relative to that of the other students. Differences in group means within and across pairing conditions were statistically insignificant, indicating that …

Prehistoric Soapstone Procurement In Northwestern South Carolina, Terry Andrew Ferguson Jun 1980

Prehistoric Soapstone Procurement In Northwestern South Carolina, Terry Andrew Ferguson

Masters Theses

During 1978 and 1979 an archeological survey was conducted near Spartanburg, South Carolina in an area containing an extensive zone of soapstone deposits from which soapstone was prehistorically quarried. The study area encompassed approximately 16 km2 east of the city of Spartanburg, north of the town of Pacolet and along the Pacolet River. The study located 18 prehistoric soapstone quarries and 17 non-quarry sites. Previous soapstone research has suggested several hypothetical quarrying procedures and reduction sequences. A generalized reduction sequence model for soapstone vessel manufacture based on these suggested procedures was utilized to evaluate the data recovered during the …

A total of fifty-five features and sixty postholes was excavated at the site with four cultural components, Late Archaic through Late Woodland, being defined. An analysis and description of all prehistoric cultural activity at the Aaron Shelton site are presented with an emphasis on the McFarland phase occupation. Fluctuating Dental Asymmetry And Stress At The Averbuch Site (40dv60), Nashville, Tennessee, Mark F. Guagliardo

Masters Theses

There may exist bilateral asymmetry in tooth size in which neither side tends to be larger within a population. Such a bilaterally random distribution of asymmetry is called fluctuating dental asymmetry. One of its major causes is the exposure of individuals to stress during the time of tooth formation. Stressors known to increase fluctuating dental asymmetry are protein deficiency, heat, cold, and noise; there are probably many others as yet undiscovered.

This study explores the patterns of fluctuating dental asymmetry at the Averbuch site, a Mississippian village and three cemeteries near Nashville, Tennessee. The effects of tooth size, dentition type, …

The Effects Of Self-Monitoring, Emg Biofeedback, And Relaxation Tapes In The Treatment Of Tension Headaches, Daniel A. Viens Jan 1980

The Effects Of Self-Monitoring, Emg Biofeedback, And Relaxation Tapes In The Treatment Of Tension Headaches, Daniel A. Viens

Masters Theses

Tension headache is an important medical-behavioral disorder because of its high incidence and the personal discomfort and disruption of normal activities that frequently accompany it. Several behavioral strategies have been applied in the treatment of this disorder. Two of the most prominent treatments are EMG biofeedback and Progressive muscle relaxation exercises. Research has shown both of these strategies to be effective treatments of tension headache but much debate still ensues as to which is the more effective treatment. The effects of different self-monitoring procedures have never been compared during EMG biofeedback or Progressive muscle relaxation treatments of tension headache.

This study incorporated three stages. Phase I was a 40 day period of alcohol acclimation with alcohol consumption during the second 20 days constituting the baseline consumption rate. Mean baseline alcohol consumption was used to block subjects into three groups. The second phase of the study consisted of an 80 day …

James D. Barber: "The Presidential Character": An Attempt Of Applicability, Renate Irene Ahlers Jan 1980

James D. Barber: "The Presidential Character": An Attempt Of Applicability, Renate Irene Ahlers

Masters Theses

In 1972 James Barger published his book The Presidential Character: Predicting Performance in the White House. In this book Barber tries to typify the American Presidents, beginning with William H. Taft, according to four psycho-political categories: active-positive, active-negative, passive-positive, and passive-negative. The most important part of Barber's thesis is that the future performance of any presidential candidate can be predicted by looking at the factors that place him into a certain category. These factors are his character, his world view and style, the power situation, and the climate of expectations. Character, world view, and style are clearly formed well …

A Comparison Of Certain Personality Characteristics Of Allergic And Non Allergic College Students As Measured By The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule, Bernard Norman Bernstein Jan 1980

A Comparison Of Certain Personality Characteristics Of Allergic And Non Allergic College Students As Measured By The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule, Bernard Norman Bernstein

Masters Theses

The importance of emotional and physical factors in allergic disorders has become the focus of a body of literature (Wittkower & Engels, 1965). Some evidence suggests that allergic individuals possess certain maladaptive personality traits. Researchers have reported that allergic individuals are more neurotic than age-matched groups of normals (Dekker, Barendregt, & De Vries, 1961), and more aggressive than non allergic individuals (Alexander, 1952; Groen, 1950; Jares & Kerekjarto, 1967). Research also suggests that allergies are more sensitive, anxious and timid (Franks & Leigh, 1956), more hypochondriacal (Smith, 1962a), need more recognition (Rogerson, 1937), experienced more physiological and psychological stress (Sanger, …
