Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien Jan 2002

Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A programming approach, data envelopment analysis (DEA), will sort and rank occupations on the basis of maximizing skills required and minimizing that occupation's wage resulting in a set of "hiring" efficiency scores. This procedure improves Borda rankings (rankings based on the average of rankings of the individual components), fixed weight, or subjective weighting schemes. In DEA, the linear programming weights or coefficients are explicitly chosen to maximize the discrimination between the skills and wages. A rank correlation between the efficiency scores and various work and demographic variables is performed. The results show a negative correlation between the wage rate and …

Effect Of Peer Mediation In Resolving Conflict Between College Students, Mary Ness Jan 1998

Effect Of Peer Mediation In Resolving Conflict Between College Students, Mary Ness

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Mediation is a non-adversarial method of resolving conflict through the use a trained third party in a structured process. This study measured college students' perception of satisfaction/resolution of conflicts with and without the presence of a trained peer mediator. Subjects wrote "scripts" of a recent conflict in which they were involved. Subjects also completed pertinence and intensity ratings of conflict areas on a Likert-type questionnaire. Conflict areas were limited to commonly experienced issues such as broken promises, annoyance, and illegitimate demands. Using the results, thirty-two subjects were paired and assigned scenarios to role play in conflict dyads. In experimental group …

The Role Of Economic, Management And Public Policy Factors On Post-Contract Conservation Reserve Program Land Use Decisions, Larry L. Janssen, Tecleberhan Ghebremicael Jan 1995

The Role Of Economic, Management And Public Policy Factors On Post-Contract Conservation Reserve Program Land Use Decisions, Larry L. Janssen, Tecleberhan Ghebremicael

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Most Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) contracts will expire from 1996 to 2001 , directly affecting land use of 36.4 million acres of highly erodible cropland enrolled in this land retirement program. The major objective of this study is to estimate the role of economic, management, and public policy factors on post-contract CRP land use decisions in South Dakota, a Northern Plains state with 2.1 million acres of enrolled land, 10% of the State's cropland base.

The major data source is a 1993 CRP survey sent to a random sample of 8.33 %of South Dakota CRP contract holders and completed by …

The Economic Value Of Water Recreation In Minnesota, Raymond L. Raab, Donald N. Steinnes Jan 1993

The Economic Value Of Water Recreation In Minnesota, Raymond L. Raab, Donald N. Steinnes

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In recent years, increased demands for water for competing uses created a need for establishing a systematic water resource management policy. Knowledge of the value of benefits of water in its various uses is necessary for allocation decisions because this resource is in the public domain. This paper discusses several non-market methods of imputing the economic value of water, particularly recreational water use. Using Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) data, two alternative techniques for measuring value ~re evaluated and compared. These methods are used to provide empirical estimates of the recreational value that people place on Minnesota's water resources. …

Integrating Women's Voices Into Public Policy, Mollie Hoben Jan 1991

Integrating Women's Voices Into Public Policy, Mollie Hoben

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Women are Minnesota's greatest untapped resource. Despite significant growth in the visibility of women in public life, the talents and contributions of Minnesota's female citizens are not yet being fully utilized. In this last decade of the century, the state faces policy challenges in human services, the environment, the economy. To most effectively meet these challenges, we need to find ways to integrate women's voices more fully into public policy.

Meeting this challenge is in everyone's interest for several reasons. For one thing, it will make our public endeavors more equitable. Any society that makes decisions for all based on …

Minnesota's 1990 Environmental Education Act, Mark A. Davis Jan 1991

Minnesota's 1990 Environmental Education Act, Mark A. Davis

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The development of new technologies and effective environmental management by communities, states, and nations will not be enough to arrest and repair the environmental degradation that exists in the world today. Nor will technology and management alone be able to prevent significant environmental degradation in the future. Extensive pollution and other types of environmental degradation have occurred because societies have not sufficiently understood and valued their environments. The development of environmentally sound societies will require changed attitudes and a citizenry which is informed about the environment. Thus, it is essential that environmental education be a part of the long range …

The State Of Environmental Education In Minnesota, Ann Sigford Jan 1991

The State Of Environmental Education In Minnesota, Ann Sigford

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Minnesota has an excellent reputation for its environmentally aware citizenry. It is also nationally known for its environmental education facilities and school programs. Which one is the result of the other is debatable; but the fact remains that Minnesotans and their legislators value environmental education. Yet environmental education in Minnesota is not without difficult issues and challenges.

This paper seeks to clarify the goals of environmental education in Minnesota and to explain who participates in it, where it is done, and how it has mushroomed in the twenty years since the first Earth Day.
