Ethnic Differences In Self-Efficacy At Southern Adventist University, Seth L. Daly Stennis

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

Concern has been expressed about the poor academic performance of African American students, in comparison to their other ethnic counterparts. Many individuals have attempted to explain this anomaly. A large portion of studies show how socioeconomic standing and parental involvement play a role in the academic achievement gap. A more modest amount used psychological factors to explain the deplorable academic achievement in African Americans. One such psychological factor, self-efficacy, was not well represented in the literature; few papers discussed the association of self-efficacy and African American academic success. The purpose of this study was to compare self-efficacy levels of individuals …

The Metaphor Of Marriage In Hosea, Leif Fredheim

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

"Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord” (Hosea 1:2). The message of Hosea is provocative. For this very reason, the biblical book of Hosea has frustrated and intrigued scholars for over two millennia. Scholarly debate has raged due to the implications the text has for the character of God and His prophet, and the ways in which God interacts with His people. It cannot, however, be claimed that the discussion has been concluded; “from centuries of critical debate only one consensus on the …

Of Mice And Men: A Comparative Study Assessing Behavioral Indicators Of Sugar Addiction In Mice And College Students, Kahlilia Morris

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

Binge eating is a maladaptive behavior associated with obesity and certain eating disorders. Numerous animal studies have shown that this bingeing behavior shares qualities with those of drug addiction. Furthermore, research in rodents has shown that this addictive behavior is also characterized by the same molecular and physiological characteristics that define drug addiction. The current study purposed to assess whether bingeing on sugar could lead to behavioral indicators of sugar dependence in mice as well as humans. The results show that bingeing on sugar did not increase addictive behavior in either mice or human participants. Instead, addictive behaviors appeared to …

The rebellious white women of the South are used as an example of what can happen when a government fails to care for the needs of its female population. The hardships these women faced are discussed and emphasis is …

Native Americans: A Study Of Their Civil War Experience, Ashley Dunbar Apr 2013

Native Americans: A Study Of Their Civil War Experience, Ashley Dunbar

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

Native Americans played a vital role in the history of the United States of America. During the unrest and upheaval of the Civil War, many Native Americans pledged their allegiance to the Union or Confederacy. The Native Americans assembled armies and participated in the battles. Their loyalty was important, as the Union and Confederacy recognized that Native American involvement could influence the war’s outcome. The war also affected the Native Americans—during the war they faced division among their tribes while endeavoring to make ends meet; after the war, they struggled to exist without slavery while coping with broken promises and …

Civil War Attitudes As Seen In Children’S Media And Toys, Andrea De Melo Apr 2013

Civil War Attitudes As Seen In Children’S Media And Toys, Andrea De Melo

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

In an age when children were urged to be “seen and not heard,” some of the faint voices of children during the Civil War survived to give a picture of their lives. Children played many roles in the Civil War; some children became Civil War soldiers, while other children stayed home but never escaped the image of the brave examples of drummer boys embodied in countless poems, literature, and pictures. The children were part of a culture that devoured even the youngest citizens of the war-torn nation during the Civil War. Today through their writings and other primary documents, we …

The purpose of this study was to measure the use of personal space among college students. Use of personal space was defined in this study as the preference or need for a specific amount of personal space. Specifically, the researcher hypothesized differences across gender and ethnicity would be found. Survey methodology was used to …

Exposing The Real Enemy: The German People’S Fear Of Exploration In The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, John Shoemaker Apr 2013

Exposing The Real Enemy: The German People’S Fear Of Exploration In The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, John Shoemaker

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

This essay critically and rhetorically analyzes the persuasive use of words in Mark Herman’s film, “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,” which centers on a highly unlikely friendship between a well-to-do German boy and Jewish boy in a concentration camp. The controversy surrounding the filmspecifically the rare and unpopular viewpoint of a German family’s experiences during World War IIprompted a further in-depth analysis of the film’s meaning. While Herman takes a unique viewpoint, I suggest that the film moves beyond the portrayal of a family unit and actually gives an explanation and object to blame for …

Revolution Or Evolution: The Development Of The Concern For The Preservation Of Information Uncovered During Archaeological Excavations In Israel And Palestine (1890-1980), Leif Fredheim

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The ICCROM conference of 1983 in Nicosia represents a turning point in the profession of archaeological conservation; here it was expressed that conservators no longer were concerned only with the preservation of excavated objects, but also with archaeological information. This study of the development of concern for the preservation of information from archaeological excavations in Palestine traces the discipline from Flinders Petrie’s first stratigraphic excavation in the region at the end of the nineteenth century to the heyday of American processual archaeology. Special attention is paid to the development of professionalism in the discipline, as made evident by the archaeologists’ …

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

A small, southeastern Christian university has two independent programs for students studying abroad or serving as missionaries for an academic year. This study examines the correlation between perceived support students felt from their university and their academic success in their first returning semester. Because of the differences in these programs our research sought to examine student perceived support before, during and after their year abroad with GPA before and after their experience. No correlation was found between perceived support and academic success, but findings showed that neither group of student sojourners felt significantly supported during the year abroad. Study abroad …
