Contrast Vs Attack Ads: How Different Forms Of Negative Campaign Advertisements Affect Senate Candidate’S Vote Share, Luke Perea Nov 2023

Contrast Vs Attack Ads: How Different Forms Of Negative Campaign Advertisements Affect Senate Candidate’S Vote Share, Luke Perea

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

This research is intended to find out how Senate candidates’ vote shares are affected by advertisements with a negative tone. Prior literature is largely inconsistent in determining the impact of advertisement tone, but separating negative advertisements into two subcategories, advertisements that attack an opponent and advertisements that contrast between oneself and one’s opponent, clearer correlations become evident. Literature suggests that attack advertisements are more effective at generating voter responsiveness and mobilizations compared to contrast advertisements, they also come with a backlash effect that often damages the attacker more than the target. Thus, candidates with a higher percentage of attack advertisements …

Russian Involvement In Frozen Conflicts Of The Post Soviet Space As A Means Of Geopolitical Positioning, Mary Giandjian Nov 2023

Russian Involvement In Frozen Conflicts Of The Post Soviet Space As A Means Of Geopolitical Positioning, Mary Giandjian

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

Upon the Soviet Union’s collapse, in a short time the once Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) became fifteen distinctly sovereign states, coupled by a sum of de facto states. The sum of these de facto states, realized from frozen conflicts, endure a distinct type of instability in Russia’s near abroad, where reconciliation is temporary given the frequent resumption of hostilities. In this paper, I detail major events of frozen conflicts in the Post Soviet Space, from South Ossetia to Nagorno-Karabakh, evaluating the Russian involvement of each de facto state’s respective frozen conflict. The combination of historical analysis and case …

Black Political Representation And American Feelings, Jhanae George Nov 2023

Black Political Representation And American Feelings, Jhanae George

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

Research on Black stereotypes argue that Black politicians are often labeled or perceived differently from the Black population as a whole. This research has led to questions on whether or not Black politicians can influence the overall perception of Blacks in America. Due to stereotypes leading to prejudicial treatment of certain groups, increases in representation of these groups in respected positions can aid in moving past the negative generalizations and any resultant treatment. By examining the number of Black representatives in America, along with feeling thermometer data from American National Election Studies, I find that there is little correlation between …

Chemicals And Creeds: Cbrn Weapon Use And Religious-Based Terrorism, Nikolai Apilado Nov 2023

Chemicals And Creeds: Cbrn Weapon Use And Religious-Based Terrorism, Nikolai Apilado

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

General theories of terrorism typically focus on economic, social, or political factors that lead to terrorist acts. Conversely, chemical, biological, radiational, and nuclear (CBRN) weapons are rarely spoken of in academic literature. Yet, these weapons are still used by terrorists in some capacity. In this paper, I argue that religion is the primary factor that influences terrorists to pursue CBRN weapons as opposed to more secular-based terrorists. This is due to the fact that religious-based terrorists are not concerned with preserving their reputation or credibility among society, as well as being so blinded by their religion that they are willing …

Pasokification: Fall Of The European Center Left Or A Transformation Of The System, Jacob S. Cox Jun 2021

Pasokification: Fall Of The European Center Left Or A Transformation Of The System, Jacob S. Cox

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

The party systems of Europe since 1945 have been defined by the division between one large center-left and one large center-right party with usually smaller parties of the center, left, or right. However, in the 21st century and especially since 2010, the center-left has seen its support plunge across Europe with a few notable exceptions. The Socialist Party of France in 2017 held the presidency and controlled the National Assembly. Nevertheless, not even three years later, the party is on the verge of extinction and beset by numerous splits. The Social Democratic Party of Germany has seen its support …

Understanding Russia, Tyler M. Goldstein Jun 2021

Understanding Russia, Tyler M. Goldstein

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

This paper will develop a comprehensive analytical framework that endeavors to explain Russian incursions during the Putin era. The bedrock of this paper’s analytical model is that Russia’s fundamental motivation is having the means to challenge unilateral action and to make the other world powers twice about interfering in Russia’s affairs. This proposed theoretical model will be tested through four case studies, utilizing content analysis and process-tracing. The first case study will cover the Second Chechen War; the second case study will be of the 2008 Russo-Georgian war; the third case study will focus on Russia’s intervention in Ukraine; the …

The Interrelationship Between Gender, Media, And Religion On Electoral Performance, Angelique Shlemon, Kianna Shlemon Jun 2021

The Interrelationship Between Gender, Media, And Religion On Electoral Performance, Angelique Shlemon, Kianna Shlemon

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

This article delves into the gender gap in the United States and how it affects multi-facets of life, especially but not limited to partisanship and electoral performance in America. Different factors are analyzed that might also affect such factors as religion and media coverage. Women's historical suppression has led to an increase of value in public welfare instead of the economy. We examine why women veer towards more liberal ideologies than men. One thing that might affect their gravitation towards liberal ideologies is religion. This paper further examines if religion affects women identifying as Democrats or Republicans. Gender roles have …

The Decline Of Local News And Its Effect On Polarization, Stanley D. Taylor Jun 2021

The Decline Of Local News And Its Effect On Polarization, Stanley D. Taylor

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

In recent decades, local news has seen a sharp decline while political polarization has seen an increase. In this paper, I will analyze how these two trends affect one another. I hypothesize that as local news declines, there will be an increase in polarization. To test this, I use figures on newspaper circulation from Pew Research Center as a proxy for local news as well as Voteview’s polarization scores given to each US Congress. After conducting my data analysis, I found support for my hypothesis. There are statistically significant figures that show that as newspapers in circulation decrease, polarization increases. …

State Immigration Policy And The Economy: Western United States, Netanya R. Buban Oct 2019

State Immigration Policy And The Economy: Western United States, Netanya R. Buban

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

States have been influenced by a variety of factors when creating local and state immigration laws. Although the enforcement of federal immigration law should not be enforced by state and local authorities, state legislatures have created their own laws in dealing with the immigrants that reside and work in their states. The research question of this paper is what economic factors influence states to introduce pro-immigrant policies? I will be looking at states in the west including Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington from the years 2016 to 2017. The specific factors observed in this paper …

Corruption And Its Effect On Economic Development In Chile, Mexico, And Brazil, Jennifer Lopez Oct 2019

Corruption And Its Effect On Economic Development In Chile, Mexico, And Brazil, Jennifer Lopez

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

In this paper, the effect of the perception of corruption on economic development will be explored. The research question addressed in this paper is: how does the perception of political corruption in Mexico, Brazil, and Chile affect their economic development? Economic development has increased significantly for all three states since 1990s, but for two of them it has been coupled with rampant corruption. The research question will be explored through a review of the current literature, a discussion of the methods, the presentation of the data and results, and finally a discussion about the results. In order to assess whether …

Extremist Support Across Generational Lines Based On Post-Communist Developments: A Critique Of Post-Materialism, Reese Zavala Oct 2019

Extremist Support Across Generational Lines Based On Post-Communist Developments: A Critique Of Post-Materialism, Reese Zavala

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

The rise of extremism in Europe is a growing concern, as far-right parties are entering parliament with unprecedented seat-shares, and some are even taking government. It has been established that the older generation is more likely to vote for either extreme and that Eastern Europeans are generally more likely to vote for the extreme, however this is an interesting phenomenon. Why are older people, with experience in a communist regime, so much more likely to support both the far-right and the far-left? The dominating theory explaining this is Inglehart's theory of post-materialism, and even though it has been updated in …

Domestic Inequality And Multilateral Action: An Examination Of Directional Relationships, Olivia Z. Miller Oct 2019

Domestic Inequality And Multilateral Action: An Examination Of Directional Relationships, Olivia Z. Miller

Governance: The Political Science Journal at UNLV

This paper seeks to examine the relationship between domestic level inequalities and broader international behavior, specifically that involving multiple state actors. It is hypothesized that increasing levels of domestic inequality will lead towards a decrease in willingness towards multilateral action. The sampling of inequalities spans the realms of income distribution, gender, and educational attainment while attitudes towards multilateral action are characterized by participation in treaties and participation in international organizations. Poisson regression analysis is used to analyze the compiled statistical findings, and a high degree of significance is shown in both models for the dependent variables, though neither is remarkably …
