This study establishes a confinement model for FRP confined normal- and high-strength concrete circular columns. A new column parameter was suggested for estimating the compressive strength of FRP confined concrete. The proposed model is able to predict the ultimate condition of FRP confined concrete columns that have similar unconfined concrete strength and confining pressure but significant differences in the jacket stiffness. The proposed model was then verified using a database of 574 FRP confined concrete circular columns with different types of FRP. This article considers a mathematical model for tumour growth based on an acid-mediated hypothesis, i.e. the assumption that tumour progression is facilitated by acidification of the region around the tumour-host interface. The resulting destruction of the normal tissue environment promotes tumour growth. We will derive and analyse a reaction-diffusion model for tumour progression that includes different aspects of pathological and healthy cell metabolism to check tumour growth. Our results can provide insights into the governing dynamics of invasive processes that may suggest possible intervention strategies, leading to the design of new and better experiments or treatments.

Container routing determines how to transport containers from their origins to their destinations in a liner shipping network. Container routing needs to be solved a number of times as a subproblem in tactical-level decision planning of liner shipping operations. Container routing is similar to the multi-commodity flow problem. This research proposes a novel hybrid-link-based model that nests the existing origin-link-based and destination-link-based models as special cases. Moreover, the hybrid-link-based model is at least as compact as the origin-to-destination-link-based, origin-link-based and destination-link-based models in the literature.

The paper proposes a new empirical model to estimate earthquake ground-motion duration, which significantly influences the damage potential of an earthquake. The paper is concerned with significant duration parameters that are defined as the time intervals between which specified values of Arias intensity are reached. In the proposed model, significant duration parameters have been expressed as a function of moment magnitude, closest site-source distance, and site condition. This paper is presenting accurate FEM model of bead-on-plate welds of 316L stainless steels through thermo-mechanical analysis. The model was composed using ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) program. In thermal analysis, mixed mode of volumetric thermal load was used to represent moving heat source. Growing weld bead was accommodated in both the thermal and mechanical models using birth and death technique. Melting phenomenon was modelled by low stiffness and zero plastic strain of melting elements. Results from thermal analysis and subsequent mechanical analysis have been validated. A new empirical model to estimate the joint shear strength of both exterior and interior beam-column connections is proposed. In the model, four parameters that have the most influence on joint shear strength are considered. Among these four, a new parameter is introduced to consider the bond condition and the possibility of beam bars transferring joint shear force into the columns. Consideration of this parameter in the model significantly improves the accuracy of the predicted joint shear strength. A major objective of the practical implemented cordon-based congestion pricing schemes is to maintain the traffic conditions within the cordon area, which is rarely considered in most of the existing studies. Semi-analytical solutions for the reversible Selkov, or glycolytic oscillations model, are considered. The model is coupled with feedback at the boundary and considered in one-dimensional reaction-diffusion cell. This experimentally feasible scenario is analogous to feedback scenarios in a continuously stirred tank reactor. The Galerkin method is applied, which approximates the spatial structure of both the reactant and autocatalyst concentrations. This approach is used to obtain a lower-order, ordinary differential equation model for the system of governing equations. This paper develops a bi-level decision model and a solution approach to optimizing service features for a company to reduce its customer churn rate. First, a bi-level decision model, together with its modeling approach, are developed to describe the gaming relationship between decision makers in a company (service provider) and its customers. Then, a practical solution approach to reaching solutions for the bi-level-modeled customer churn problem is developed. Finally, experiments and case studies are conducted to illustrate the bi-level decision model and the solution approach.

Cooperative retransmission schemes can significantly improve transmission reliability and performance over high loss and time-varying links. However, analytically comparing performance between retransmission strategies is challenging and generally requires simplistic assumptions. This paper presents a general model for the performance of distributed, slot-based contention algorithms for opportunistic decode and forward retransmission algorithms. The model is independent of specific modulation or coding schemes and may be adapted to suit state-based transmission probability models. The model is validated through QualNet simulations.

Opinions of individuals in real social networks are arguably strongly influenced by external determinants, such as the opinions of those perceived to have the highest levels of authority. In order to model this, we have extended an existing model of consensus formation in an adaptive network by the introduction of a parameter representing each agent's level of 'authority' based on their opinion relative to the overall opinion distribution. We found that introducing this model, along with a randomly varying opinion convergence factor, significantly impacts the final state of converged opinions and the number of interactions required to reach that state. …

Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is employed to fabricate FePt L10 thin films from elemental targets. Dramatic structure variations are obtained by varying the laser frequency while keeping the thickness of the films constant. A new theoretical model based on the mean field approach is proposed, which quantitatively describes the structural changes obtained experimentally. Bayesian inference methods are applied within a Bayesian hierarchical modelling framework to the problems of joint state and parameter estimation, and of state forecasting. We explore and demonstrate the ideas in the context of a simple nonlinear marine biogeochemical model. A novel approach is proposed to the formulation of the stochastic process model, in which ecophysiological properties of plankton communities are represented by autoregressive stochastic processes. A modified 150 mm Rowe cell equipped with pore water pressure measurement was used to capture the flow relationship during vacuum-assisted radial consolidation. Based on the measured data, a radial consolidation model incorporating the effects of vacuum preloading is proposed, based on a non-linear relationship between the flow velocity and hydraulic gradient. The predictions of the proposed consolidation model are then compared with the predictions based on Hansbo’s Darcian and non- Darcian models. Sedimentation in dams' reservoirs is one of the most pressing concerns facing dams today. Maroon reservoir dam, located in Khuzestan Province, is one of the most important dams in this region. Since it is a new constructed dam, numerical simulation of sedimentation trend in its reservoirs could significantly help on a better utilization. To this end, TCM model which is capable to simulate density currents was used. The obtained results show that the dam loses about 91 million m3 of its reservoirs during a 50-year exploitation period.

The human gut is colonized by a complex microbiota with multiple benefits. Although the surface-attached, mucosal microbiota has a unique composition and potential to influence human health, it remains difficult to study in vivo. Therefore, we performed an in-depth microbial characterization (human intestinal tract chip (HITChip)) of a recently developed dynamic in vitro gut model, which simulates both luminal and mucosal gut microbes (mucosal-simulator of human intestinal microbial ecosystem (M-SHIME)). The mean-absolute-deviation cost minimization model, which aims to minimize sum of the mean value and the absolute deviation (AD) of the total cost multiplied by a given non-negative weighting, is one of a number of typical robust optimization models. This paper first uses a straightforward example to show that the solution obtained by this model with some weightings is not actually an optimal decision. The behaviour of collapsible soils (loess) is studied in this paper. Simulations of the stress and strain behaviour of the soil are made via the theoretical framework of Structured Cam Clay, with the effect of glutinous ingredient in loess suggested to be modelled as cementation effect. Based on the simulations, the capacity of the model for representing the behaviour loess is investigated, and discussions on modelling the behaviour of collapsible soil in general are given.
