Design Optimization And Comparative Analysis Of Silicon-Nanowire-Based Couplers, Hongqiang Li, Xiaye Dong, Enbang Li, Zhihui Liu, Yaoting Bai

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Three kinds of highly compact 2 x 2 couplers based on silicon nanowire are designed and optimized for the array waveguide grating (AWG) demodulation integration microsystem in this paper. These couplers are directional (X) coupler, cross gap coupler (CGC), and multimode interface (MMI) coupler. The couplers are simulated using the beam propagation method. The distance between the input/output waveguides is set to 10 μm considering the test of a single device in the following work. The total footprint of X coupler is 10 μmx 300 μm. The length of parallel film waveguide is 1 μm. After optimization, the minimum excess …

Reliability-Based Conversion Of A Structural Design Code For Railway Prestressed Concrete Sleepers, A M. Remennikov, Martin Murray, Sakdirat Kaewunruen Jan 2012

Reliability-Based Conversion Of A Structural Design Code For Railway Prestressed Concrete Sleepers, A M. Remennikov, Martin Murray, Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

"Ballasted railway track is very suitable for heavy-rail networks because of its many superior advantages in design, construction, short- and long-term maintenance, sustainability, and life cycle cost. An important part of the railway track system, which distributes the wheel load to the formation, is the railway sleeper. Improved knowledge has raised concerns about design techniques for prestressed concrete (PC) sleepers. Most current design codes for these rely on allowable stresses and material strength reductions. However, premature cracking of PC sleepers has been found in railway tracks. The major cause of cracking is the infrequent but high-magnitude wheel loads produced by …

Mechanics Of Design And Model Development Of Cvc-Plus Roll Curve, Jianzhong Xu, Dianyao Gong, Zhengyi Jiang, Xianghua Liu, Guodong Wang Jan 2012

Mechanics Of Design And Model Development Of Cvc-Plus Roll Curve, Jianzhong Xu, Dianyao Gong, Zhengyi Jiang, Xianghua Liu, Guodong Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The mathematic model of CVC-Plus work roll curve is built. The ratio of the initial shifting value to the target crown is determined, and the mathematical model considering the relationship between the coefficients A2, A3, A4, A5 and is established. According to the theoretical analysis, the distance between the maximum or minimum point of the high order equivalent crown for work roll with CVC-plus roll curve and the rolling central point is the times of the roll barrel length. In general, the initial shifting value of the CVC-plus roll curve is not equal to the initial shifting value of the …

Inclusion Of Mobile Phone Numbers Into An Ongoing Population Health Survey In New South Wales, Australia: Design, Methods, Call Outcomes, Costs And Sample Representativeness, Margo Barr, Jason J. Van Ritten, David G. Steel, Sarah V. Thackway Jan 2012

Inclusion Of Mobile Phone Numbers Into An Ongoing Population Health Survey In New South Wales, Australia: Design, Methods, Call Outcomes, Costs And Sample Representativeness, Margo Barr, Jason J. Van Ritten, David G. Steel, Sarah V. Thackway

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Background: In Australia telephone surveys have been the method of choice for ongoing jurisdictional population health surveys. Although it was estimated in 2011 that nearly 20% of the Australian population were mobile-only phone users, the inclusion of mobile phone numbers into these existing landline population health surveys has not occurred. This paper describes the methods used for the inclusion of mobile phone numbers into an existing ongoing landline random digit dialling (RDD) health survey in an Australian state, the New South Wales Population Health Survey (NSWPHS). This paper also compares the call outcomes, costs and the representativeness of the resultant …

Parallel Computing Method For Intermodal Shipping Network Design, Zhiyuan Liu, Shuaian Wang, Qiang Meng Jan 2012

Parallel Computing Method For Intermodal Shipping Network Design, Zhiyuan Liu, Shuaian Wang, Qiang Meng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study aims to improve the efficiency of design technique for intermodal shipping network design, by virtue of parallel computing system. The existing methods for maritime liner shipping network design are mainly dealing with port-to-port demand. However, a big portion of the customers of a liner shipping company locate in the inland part. Thus, a holistic analysis is necessary to deal with the inland OD pairs, where the transport mode-change from inland transportation to maritime shipping is involved. This paper first reviews a solution method for the conversion of inland OD demand to port-to-port demand. Due to the size of …

Feasibility Of Passivhaus Standards And Alternative Passive Design On Climatic Zones Of Chile - Determination Of Energy Requirements With Dynamic Simulation, Javier Carrasco Eade, Georgios Kokogiannakis Jan 2012

Feasibility Of Passivhaus Standards And Alternative Passive Design On Climatic Zones Of Chile - Determination Of Energy Requirements With Dynamic Simulation, Javier Carrasco Eade, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The current building envelope standards from Article 4.1.10 of the “General Law of Urban Planning and Construction” The current building envelope standards from Article 4.1.10 of the “General Law of Urban Planning and Construction” in Chile are applied on a typical residential building for the climate of Concepción (36° Latitude South, 73° Longitude West) and a detailed energy simulation program is used to assess the energy performance of this building. The simulation results of the Chilean standards are then compared with simulation results of PassivHaus standards upon the same building layout and with simulation results from the same typical building …

Predication Of The Behaviour Of Bulk Materials In The Design And Operation Of Bulk Handling And Processing Plants, David Hastie, Peter Wypych, Andrew Grima, Richard La Roche, David Curry Jan 2012

Predication Of The Behaviour Of Bulk Materials In The Design And Operation Of Bulk Handling And Processing Plants, David Hastie, Peter Wypych, Andrew Grima, Richard La Roche, David Curry

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

It is very dangerous to assume or extrapolate anything when it comes to bulk material properties and behaviour. Traditional methods for flow prediction, such as hand calculation or even just relying on past experience, require assumptions to be made about the bulk material properties and flow. Although these materials may have generic names and possess similar properties (e.g. coal, iron ore), they can all behave quite differently under dynamic conditions. What we end up designing for one part of the plant may be quite different to what is needed in another part of the plant, which may be handling or …
