Creating Knowledge Graphs For Collections And Lod Visualization: Some Cases, Sai Deng
Creating Knowledge Graphs For Collections And Lod Visualization: Some Cases, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This presentation will share knowledge graphs and other Linked Open Data (LOD) visualization the author created or helped in creating for a few projects, including people in the Pemberton Correspondence Collection, WikiProject: Chinese Female Poets, and UCF Teachers & Researchers. It will also cover the current state of LOD in Ex Libris’ library services platform Alma. The purpose of this talk is to help our cataloging folks better understand LOD and be better prepared for the upcoming changes related to LOD in our library system.
Lower The Barrier & Be Empowered: Creating And Including Linked Data Vocabularies For Digital Collections, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Linked data has been explored and adopted by the library and archive community in recent years, but it has remained a relatively high bar to implement for most librarians and catalogers in their daily work. To lower the barrier, the librarians at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries have adopted open source tools and platforms such as OpenRefine and Wikidata to their workflows to include linked data for their collections in the digital repositories as well as the library catalog. This presentation will review digital repositories' capabilities in accommodating linked data and show several cases of adding linked data …

Session on linked data and OpenRefine in "Stay Savvy with Scholarly Communication Brown Bag Lunch" at the University of Central Florida Libraries. It covers the following topics: Why does linked data matter? How can libraries and librarians embrace linked data? Linked Data in the Library and the Web (Cases, Standards and Vocabularies); Linked Data Design Principles, Building Blocks & Creation; Current Digital Repositories and Linked Data; Data Editing Tool: OpenRefine (Features, Examples); Possible Ways to Get Involved.
A Step Forward: Adding Linked Data Vocabularies To Digital Repositories, Sai Deng
A Step Forward: Adding Linked Data Vocabularies To Digital Repositories, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Linked data has been a recent endeavor in the library community and various libraries have experimented with linked data in their traditional library catalog and digital collections. This presentation will review the different linked data practices especially focusing on those related to digital collections in academic libraries, explore the current digital library systems’ capabilities in accommodating linked data and present how linked data vocabularies have been added to the digital repositories at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries. The UCF Libraries have been adding linked data vocabularies to its institutional repository from the Library of Congress’ authority files and …
Overcoming The Challenges Of Implementing Standardized Metadata Practices In A Digital Repository, Sai Deng
Overcoming The Challenges Of Implementing Standardized Metadata Practices In A Digital Repository, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
While implementing standards in cataloging digital collections is often a Metadata Librarian’s conscience or inner desire, sometimes it’s a challenge to do so if a system is not built to accommodate such standardized practices. This kind of dilemma is not uncommon in the metadata and digital repository arena. This presentation will address the various challenges in working with metadata in digital repositories such as, name authority control for authors, departments and colleges, type values selection, keywords and subject choices, whether to add linked data URIs to various fields in the records and data discrepancies in harvesting data into the OCLC’s …
Metadata Services In The Context Of Digital Humanities, Sai Deng
Metadata Services In The Context Of Digital Humanities, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Part II of the University of Central Florida Libraries hosted research lifecycle session at THATCamp Florida 2016. The Research Lifecycle at UCF presents a unified model of campus-wide support and services available to UCF researchers. This model was designed by the UCF Libraries’ Research Lifecycle Committee with inspiration from OpenWetWare’s Research Cycle. This presentation aims to explore the services and resources that UCF Libraries currently provides to researchers, while exploring how digital humanities research, specifically, can utilize such tools.
Preparing For Linked Data In Digital Repositories, Sai Deng
Preparing For Linked Data In Digital Repositories, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This program will present the experiment of adding linked data values to the digital collections at the University of Central Florida Libraries in its digital repository and institutional repository (IR). Working with the Digital Initiatives and some faculty members, the Metadata Librarian in Technical Services has been adding Library of Congress linked data and Virtual Internarial Authority File data to the library's collections in CONTENTdm and its Digital Commons based IR. While these systems haven't been designed or updated to fully accommodate linked data yet, to add linked data values to the collection fields in these systems is preparing for …
Applying Rda To Contentdm & Islandora, Sai Deng
Applying Rda To Contentdm & Islandora, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The Resource Description and Access (RDA) standard has been widely implemented in integrated library systems and its application with MARC has long been discussed, but its applicability in content and digital asset management systems and with non-MARC standards hasn't been much addressed. The national RDA non-MARC tests found that it is not easy to evaluate RDA "without an application available to aptly manage and display the data," however, to accommodate RDA in existing content and digital asset management systems still remains an issue. This presentation will address how RDA has been applied in cataloging and migrating digital materials in CONTENTdm …
Applying Rda To Digital Resources Metadata, Sai Deng, Peter Spyers-Duran
Applying Rda To Digital Resources Metadata, Sai Deng, Peter Spyers-Duran
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This presentation will describe how Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been applied in cataloging, updating, and migrating digital resources at the University of Central Florida Libraries. Presenters will explain the similarities and differences of using RDA to catalog traditional serials in an Integrated Library System (ILS) and digitized serials and serial analytics in a Content Management System (CMS). Examples will be used to illustrate the issues of using RDA in conjunction with other metadata standards such as Dublin Core (DC) and Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) to catalog digital resources including digitized newspapers and monographs, such as: relating RDA …

Metadata Migration To Islandora: Is There An Easy Way?, Sai Deng, Lee Dotson
Metadata Migration To Islandora: Is There An Easy Way?, Sai Deng, Lee Dotson
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This presentation will introduce UCF’s digital collection migration from DigiTool to Islandora, the new content management system for the state universities in Florida. It discusses the issues in DublinCore (DC) to MODS transformation, explores the possible options, the approach adopted and the tool used for MODS metadata editing.
As part of the state-wide Islandora implementation, UCF has been migrating its collections in DigiTool to MODS records for Islandora to ingest. In migrating from a less granular metadata schema to a more granular one, many issues are involved such as data ambiguity, overly generic data representation, the markup inadequacy in describing …
