This is a collaboratively-written call for the American Historical Association to appoint a task force to survey the profession as to the place of digital historical scholarship in promotion and tenure and graduate student training and to recommend standards and guidelines for the profession to follow. This document is a product of many of the exciting changes discussed below. It began at a session atTHATCamp AHA 2012 that included graduate students, tenured and non-tenured faculty, and librarians. These participants and others continued their conversations at the physical conference and afterwards on the web. Additional signatures and edits in the …

Prepped For Departure: Sources Of Information For Aviators, Heidi Blackburn Jan 2012

Prepped For Departure: Sources Of Information For Aviators, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Publications

While some may joke the only information a pilot needs to know is which way is up and which way is down, the information needs of the aviator are easily equal to the most advanced scholar, doctor, or lawyer. Much has been written about communication between pilots, crew, and air traffic control but little has been written about information needs once the pilot is on the ground. Professional organizations, government entities, and corporate vendors have a wealth of information to share with aviators, just as in any other professional field and keeping up with a highly evolving industry is important …

This paper seeks to discuss some of the issues involved.

Design/methodology/approach – This research focuses on Millennials and their adoption of new technologies in libraries through the process of diffusion and the stages of adoption as outlined by Everett Rogers: communication through certain channels; over time; and among members of a social …

Student retention rates have long been a topic among school administrators, but it is an issue barely mentioned in library circles. This article will discuss the role the academic library can play in increasing and maintaining student retention rates on campus. By focusing briefly on four main topics, including reaching out to students early and often, getting them in the library door and getting them to stay, the reader will be able to see the broad picture of how crucial libraries are to fighting student attrition.

Go The Extra Mile — It’S Never Crowded, Heidi Blackburn May 2009

Go The Extra Mile — It’S Never Crowded, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Publications

My daytime alias is Reference and Instruction Librarian, but my real title is Master of Library Science. I am a newly minted MLS graduate (May 2008) and have worked full-time at Kansas State University at Salina for almost a year. As a type A personality, I had my midlife crisis early: the summer before I was to graduate with a BA in business administration. After I’d stubbornly pursued the business world since high school, I decided that corporate America held no interest for me. My family asked what I planned to do after graduation and I announced I would attend …

Institutional archives have always provided a sense of history and unity for most universities. This is especially emphasized for the Kansas State University at Salina photographic collection. The school has gone through four different name changes in the last fifty years and the library has amassed an overwhelming assortment of photographs documenting various events on campus, from groundbreaking ceremonies to student social occasions. With an estimated total of over 11,000 unlabeled photographs, the K-State at Salina librarians have worked hard to begin the process of providing the university community with a useful resource for historical research in the future.

Folklore In Archives: The Norman Studer Papers And The University At Albany Experience, Amy Schindler

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The papers of Norman Studer document the career of a progressive educator and folklorist at Camp Woodland in the Catskill Mountains and the Downtown Community School in New York City from the 1930s through the 1970s. Their original custodian, Joan Studer Levine, recognized that her father’s papers needed to be permanently housed in a repository that could both preserve the materials and ensure access for researchers. The collection came to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives at the University at Albany in May 2001, and the work of cataloging and preserving its contents is ongoing. Important associations …

Plagiarism, Melissa Cast-Brede Jan 2003

Plagiarism, Melissa Cast-Brede

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The news media today is filled with articles on plagiarism. Well known figures such as Stephen Ambrose and Doris Kearns Goodwin parade across our newspapers charged with plagiarizing. Studies from around the country show a high number of high school and college students admitting to using others' works as their own. It's fairly clear that more should be done to prevent plagiarism. In reviewing the literature, prevention of plagiarism involves three issues: understanding why it happens, detecting it and structuring assignments to prevent it.

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Documenting Environmental Activism In New York State, Brian Keough, Amy Schindler

A significant component of the political history of New York and other states in the second half of the twentieth century is the extraordinary growth of a social movement directed at environmental issues. This article critically examines documentation strategy and the evolution of statewide documentation projects in New York, describes the implementation of a documentation project for environmental affairs, and suggests methods for improving the identification and selection of records of enduring value. ‘‘Going Where The Questions Are’’: Using Media To Maintain Personalized Contact In Reference Service In Medium-Sized Academic Libraries, Sarah Brick Archer, Melissa Cast-Brede

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Different approaches to reference service have been added over the years, but the basic premise of the service has not changed–the desire to assist and educate users in locating information. As new technologies are added, such as desktop conferencing and web access, it is important that the personalized contact which is the heart of reference service be preserved. The human touch in the reference process is very important to the success of the reference transaction. Media can be useful in assisting reference librarians in ‘‘Going Where the Questions Are’’ while still maintaining the personal element in creating real-time reference transactions …
