The following study is a partial analysis of the phonology of the dialect spoken at Naze, the largest city on the island of Amami O'Shima in the northern Ryukyo Islands. Although it is generally known that Ryukyuan is related to Japanese, no descriptive study, employing modern linguistic methods, has been published for any of the Ryukyuan dialects. The time available for the fieldwork underlying this analysis limited the problem to phonology, and even here, the results are subject to the disadvantages of data which may be incomplete.
