The Influence Of Ecoregions And Land Use/Land Cover On Fish Assemblages In Southern Minnesota, Masaki Hara

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Level III ecoregions of the conterminous United States provide a framework for facilitating environmental understanding and aiding environmental management practices. In southern Minnesota near Mankato, there are two level III ecoregions: to the east is North Central Hardwood Forest (NCHF) and to the west are Western Corn Belt Plains (WCBP). They contained a combined 104 fish species in local lakes. However, little is known about how land use and land cover affect fish assemblages in these lakes, which are indicator fish species, and if any invasive fish species are adversely impacting native fish populations. This study addresses these issues through …

Changing Careers, Changing Identities: The Role Of Strong And Weak Ties On Career Change Decisions, Christopher S. Lienemann Jan 2024

Changing Careers, Changing Identities: The Role Of Strong And Weak Ties On Career Change Decisions, Christopher S. Lienemann

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Career development theories and business management/human resources explanations for career change and employee turnover suggest that there are many potential influences on career change including a lack of congruence between an individual’s changing needs and their environment, the discovery of new career options previously ignored or overlooked, ineffective or harmful management practices, and organizational or life changes outside of the individual’s control. However, we do not have a comprehensive sociological understanding of how workers leverage and are influenced by their social networks when changing careers. Working from Granovetter’s theory that “weak” and “strong” network ties provide access to job leads …

As environmental crises are systemic, intersectional, and extreme, this thesis frames corresponding action as a necessary and appropriate response. Using semi-structured interviews with people who identified as having engaged in radical environmental justice (EJ) activism, this study explores the following two research questions: the types of environmental actions and attitudes these activists report engaging in, and the types of factors and experiences they report as inhibiting and encouraging those actions and attitudes. This information might help unearth actions and policies that can help prompt, sustain, and protect engagement in radical EJ activism, which is here defined as activism that addresses …

Physiological Indices Of Anxiety And Self-Regulation Under Task Demands And Talk Aloud, Zachary Gerber Jan 2024

Physiological Indices Of Anxiety And Self-Regulation Under Task Demands And Talk Aloud, Zachary Gerber

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Anxiety shows differential reactions to stress across two distinct constructs: anxious apprehension and anxious arousal. Differences are related to bilateral resting state activity differences as measured by ECG and MRI studies, cognitive coping strategies measure via mismatch between anticipated and actual outcomes and across behavioral performance measures. Of note is the lack of extension of these terms to physiological domains other than measures of brain activity. It has been posited that the brain interacts in a top-down regulatory fashion with the autonomic nervous system to coordinate bodily reactions with environmental information to bring about changes in behavior. Given brain and …

Geomorphology, Sedimentology, And Depositional Chronology Of The Christmas Dunes And Their Implications For Proglacial Lake Drainage In The Lake Superior Basin, Abigail Fischer

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Megaflood (or catastrophic flood) landscapes resulting from overflow or outburst flooding processes have been a focus of geoscientific inquiry dating back nearly 150 years. In these landscapes, the geomorphic forms, both depositional and erosional, have been used to elucidate on the magnitude, frequency, chronology, and landscape evolutionary processes during these high-magnitude events. In addition, recent research has pointed to the landscape altering consequences of these events in creating and/or reorganizing drainage basins downstream of where these events originate – creating new hydrogeomorphic systems. Two significant questions remain in this research: 1) what is the genesis of megaflood depositional dune-like landforms …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Prairie potholes are depressional wetland features found throughout the northern Great Plains region of the United States and Canada. These wetlands have high potential to store large quantities of carbon, but many have been altered for conventional agricultural practices. Recently, conservation practices (e.g., no-till and cover crops) and federal conservation programs (e.g., Conservation Reserve Program (CRP)) are contributing to these landscapes returning to their more natural state. The restoration of prairie pothole soils has the potential to increase their carbon storage abilities, which would help decrease CO2 in the atmosphere and aid in mitigating climate change. The purpose of this …

Teaching Culture In The Argentinian Efl Classroom: Beliefs, Practice And Challenges, María Mercedes Sempé

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The need to address culture in EFL/ESL classrooms has been stressed by scholars in the SLA field for decades (see Kramsch, 1993, 2009, 2011; Byram, 1988; Liddicoat & Scarino, 2013). The original intention of working with culture in the English classes as a means to develop language proficiency –sociocultural competence– was expanded, and nowadays, the focus is on the role culture instruction has in developing empathy and respect for other ways of living and in promoting reflection about learners’ own lifestyle –intercultural competence (Byram, 1988, 2008; Deardoff, 2006). This new focus on cultural instruction is reflected in national curriculums around …
