Business Relationships And Perceived Environmental Uncertainty: Should I Stay Or Should I Go Now?, Jennifer L. Harrison, Stephen J. Kelly

This paper investigates the association between perceived environmental uncertainty (PEU) and instrumental, affective and normative commitment, testing the null hypotheses that there is no significant association between PEU and the three components of commitment. The results indicate that there is a negative direct association between instrumental and normative commitment and PEU but no significant direct association between affective commitment and PEU (however there is a strong indirect effect). The conclusions drawn are that feelings of attachment, obligation and perceived need (affective, normative and instrumental commitment respectively) dissipate in environments perceived to be turbulent. Image Formation Information Sources And An Iconic Australian Tourist Destination, Janet Hanlan, Stephen Kelly

Tourist destination brand image is a major influencing factor in traveller destination choice. This exploaratory research into the information sources form which destination brand image evolves provides insights which have the potential to improve tourism destination brand development strategies. In-depth interview with 21 international backpackers on Australia's northern NSW coast indicate that mainstream media play little or no part in the formation of respondents' image of the coastal destination of Byron Bay. Rather, word of mouth and autonomous independent information sources were the key media through which respondents formed their image of this iconic Australian tourist destination. This paper is based on a review of literature into industrial clusters and subsequently discusses identified success factors within the context of ICT industrial clusters generally and New Zealand ICT industrial clusters in particular. It is argued that through identifying the success attributes underpinning industrial clusters a baseline can be established for decision-making by both industry vertical groups and various levels of government. It is also proposed that the application of this baseline logic to the development of New Zealand ICT clusters will enhance the domestic and international development of these clusters. As a response to the junk debt-inspired global economic crisis, governments, with supra-national organizational approval, have appropriated billions of taxpayers dollars for bailouts, have set up special funds and underwritten depositors savings in the desperate hope of alleviating the threat of rapid, economic decline and systemic destruction of value. Many governments within Australia actively support Masters Games with the expectation that such events generate significant economic benefits. However, while research demonstrates that 'non-local' participants provide greater economic value to the host region, little is known about this key participant category. In particular, previous Masters Games research has only briefly considered the influence of travel on participant motives. In order to address this gap in the literature, a qualitative investigation of the motives among non-local Masters Games participants was undertaken. This paper provides an exploratory review of current global research on industrial clusters, and seeks to identify the key success components of these clusters. It then discusses these attributes in terms of their implication for New Zealand ICT industrial clusters. It is argued that by reviewing the success attributes underpinning industrial clusters a baseline can be established for decision-making in both the commercial activities of industry vertical groups, as well as local/central government economic policy formulation.
