Background

The SKMC Office of the Dean through its Graduate Medical Education (GME) Section identified a need for more comprehensive support for GME research efforts. This was intensified as the residency program requirements began to formalize the expectations and quantification of scholarly output for both trainees and core GME faculty.1 In consultation with the Director of the Academic Commons, this GME-focused position was conceptualized to better meet the needs of our residents and faculty, and thus enhance the scholarly projects of our GME constituency. Graduate Occupational Therapy Students: Communication And Research Preferences From Three University Libraries, Lisa A. Adriani, Daniel G. Kipnis, Rhonda I. Kolbin, Daniel Verbit

Library liaisons from three universities distributed an anonymous survey to graduate occupational therapy students to gauge preferred methods of communication when conducting research. This article discusses three findings: whom the students prefer to turn to when seeking research assistance, which methods of communication students prefer, and how long students spend searching before asking for assistance. From 193 responses, the liaisons reasoned that students prefer consulting with their peers before seeking help from librarians or faculty or instructors and they 2 prefer assistance face-to-face. Additionally, the majority are willing to research from 30 minutes to 1 hour before seeking research help.

Academic library designs evolve to match the educational philosophy and practices of their home institutions. Nexus Learning – our university’s signature pedagogy – actively engages all learners in a collaborative approach to solving real-world problems and uses a humanistic approach to designing effective solutions. Three student teams used this methodology to assess the current use of a large, primarily undergraduate library and propose a re-imagined library space that meets the needs of the current academic community.

BACKGROUND:

ClinicalTrials.gov (CT) is an increasingly important resource for systematic reviewers attempting to identify published and unpublished clinical studies. In addition to clinical studies, however, some searches of the CT database also return systematic reviews (SRs). When I inquired about the SRs appearing in the results, the NLM Help Desk responded that “We do not recommend that systematic reviews be entered in ClinicalTrials.gov, since we only want the results of a clinical trial entered once. Objective Pilot a group assignment using blogs and wikis to develop evidence-based medicine skills in third year medical students on an internal medicine clerkship. Instead of the clerkship’s previous individual ten-page paper assignment, the students were divided into four groups of sixteen. During the clerkship, students are on geographically dispersed rotations. The earlier ten-page paper had required the students to complete a patient history and physical write-up. With the pilot project, each group was assigned a librarian and a physician faculty mentor. Each student recorded on the blog a clinical scenario and question they encountered. Virtual microscopy has replaced microscopes representing a sea change in how microscopic anatomy is taught at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU).

The class of 2009 inaugurated virtual microscopy made possible by updating a wet laboratory with new computer stations. Virtual microscopy retains the learning features of microscopes while promoting the learning of relationships through small group interactions. Multi-station computers, equipped with new hardware technology that allows up to 5 monitors and keyboards to run from a single CPU, were installed providing a cost and space effective way to bring virtual microscopy to a large number of students in a small group …

Information literacy, often described as a person's ability to effectively find and evaluate answers to questions using a variety of information resources, is of particular importance to health care workers. This paper presents the results of an information literacy survey presented to the occupational therapy (OT) students at Thomas Jefferson University during a series of required class activities. Also described are the authors' activities with the faculty and courses at Jefferson. The survey was made available to first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year occupational therapy students along with nursing students and pharmacy students. Background and Purpose: The physical examination section of a multimedia program developed to teach infant history and physical examination skills was evaluated.

Methods: 71 students participated: one group viewed only the physical examination section (PX), one the history section (HX), one none of the program (CX). Physical examination skills were assessed by direct observation of medical students performing an abdominal exam and scored using a checklist at baseline, immediately after intervention and at the end of the pediatric clerkship. Results were analyzed using ANOVA with repeated measures.

Before the rising popularity of the Internet in the mid 1990s, Scott Memorial Library, like most others, used printed newsletters to inform users about new resources and services. The JEFFLINE Forum, our attempt to resuscitate the Library's newsletter by employing the technical advantages-and increasing presence-of the Web, debuted in October of 1999. The fifth anniversary of the Forum seemed like a good time to look back at its evolution and to examine some of the challenges inherent in developing and sustaining a library newsletter.

Despite the emphasis placed on physicians’ lifelong learning, no psychometrically sound instrument has been developed to provide an operational measure of the concept and its components among physicians. The authors designed this study to develop a tool for measuring physician lifelong learning, to identify its underlying components and to assess its psychometric properties. A 37-item questionnaire was developed, based on a review of literature and the results of two pilot studies. Psychometric analyses of the responses of 160 physicians identified 19 items that were included in the Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning. Factor analysis of the 19 items showed …
