Estimating The Parameters Of Rayleigh Cumulative Exposure Model In Simple Step-Stress Testing. Natasha Beretvas Is An, Mohammed Al-Haj Ebrahem, Abedel-Qader Al-Masri Nov 2009

Estimating The Parameters Of Rayleigh Cumulative Exposure Model In Simple Step-Stress Testing. Natasha Beretvas Is An, Mohammed Al-Haj Ebrahem, Abedel-Qader Al-Masri

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Assumes the life distribution of a test unit for any stress follows a Rayleigh distribution with scale parameterθ , and that Ln(θ ) is a linear function of the stress level. Maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters under a cumulative exposure model are obtained. The approximate variance estimates obtained from the asymptotic normal distribution of the maximum likelihood estimators are used to construct confidence intervals for the model parameters. A simulation study was conducted to study the performance of the estimators. Simulation results showed that in terms of bias, mean squared error, attainment of the nominal confidence level, symmetry …

Estimation Of The Standardized Mean Difference For Repeated Measures Designs, Lindsey J. Wolff Smith, S. Natasha Beretvas Nov 2009

Estimation Of The Standardized Mean Difference For Repeated Measures Designs, Lindsey J. Wolff Smith, S. Natasha Beretvas

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This simulation study modified the repeated measures mean difference effect size, d=RM , for scenarios with unequal pre- and post-test score variances. Relative parameter and SE bias were calculated for dRM ≠ versus dRM = . Results consistently favored dRM over d=RM with worse positive parameter and negative SE bias identified for d=RM for increasingly heterogeneous variance conditions.

Analysis Of Multifactor Experimental Designs, Phillip I. Good Nov 2009

Analysis Of Multifactor Experimental Designs, Phillip I. Good

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In the one-factor case, Good and Lunneborg (2006) showed that the permutation test is superior to the analysis of variance. In the multi-factor case, simulations reveal the reverse is true. The analysis of variance is remarkably robust against departures from normality including instances in which data is drawn from mixtures of normal distributions or from Weibull distributions. The traditional permutation test based on all rearrangements of the data labels is not exact and is more powerful that the analysis of variance only for 2xC designs or when there is only a single significant effect. Permutation tests restricted to synchronized permutations …

A Linear B-Spline Threshold Dose-Response Model With Dose-Specific Response Variation Applied To Developmental Toxicity Studies, Chin-Shang Li, Daniel L. Hunt Nov 2009

A Linear B-Spline Threshold Dose-Response Model With Dose-Specific Response Variation Applied To Developmental Toxicity Studies, Chin-Shang Li, Daniel L. Hunt

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A linear B-spline function was modified to model dose-specific response variation in developmental toxicity studies. In this new model, response variation is assumed to differ across dose groups. The model was applied to a developmental toxicity study and proved to be significant over the previous model of singular response variation.

Test For The Equality Of The Number Of Signals, Madhusudan Bhandary, Debasis Kundu Nov 2009

Test For The Equality Of The Number Of Signals, Madhusudan Bhandary, Debasis Kundu

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A likelihood ratio test for testing the equality of the ranks of two non-negative definite covariance matrices arising in the area of signal processing is derived. The asymptotic distribution of the test statistic follows a Chi-square distribution from the general theory of likelihood ratio test.

Private Warehouse Investment Strategies In Small Versus Large Manufacturing Firms, John E. Spillan, Michael A. Mcginnis, Jonathan W. Kohn Oct 2009

Private Warehouse Investment Strategies In Small Versus Large Manufacturing Firms, John E. Spillan, Michael A. Mcginnis, Jonathan W. Kohn

Journal of Transportation Management

The research reported in this manuscript empirically compares the private warehouse investment strategies of small and large manufacturing firms. Mail surveys were administered to independent samples of small and large United States manufacturing firms. This research is based on a series of identically worded questions administered to both samples. Data was factor analyzed and cluster analyzed to identify three private warehouse investment strategies for small and large firms and two strategies for large firms. Analyses of three independent variables further evaluated differences in private warehouse investment strategies. Finally, the warehouse mix of small and of large firms was compared. This …

Roles And Capabilities Of The Retail Supply Chain Organization, C. Clifford Defee, Wesley S. Randall, Brian J. Gibson Oct 2009

Roles And Capabilities Of The Retail Supply Chain Organization, C. Clifford Defee, Wesley S. Randall, Brian J. Gibson

Journal of Transportation Management

Supply chain management (SCM) has become a critical strategic function in recent years. Research in the discipline has been focused toward the upstream side of the supply chain on functions such as warehousing, transportation, procurement and production. As power has shifted downstream toward retailers and their customers, SCM research has been slow to respond. This represents a significant gap, and a significant opportunity. Retailers face challenges that differ from those found in upstream suppliers and manufacturers. We present findings from a study of senior supply chain executives in the retail industry that focuses on the supply chain challenges of greatest …

Avoiding Shipper/Consignee Double Payment Liability, Roger F. Huff Oct 2009

Avoiding Shipper/Consignee Double Payment Liability, Roger F. Huff

Journal of Transportation Management

The purpose of this article is neither to engage in an overly technical legal analysis nor to disparage motor carriers who bring “double liability” claims against financially viable shippers/consignees; after all the trucking company has performed a valuable service and is simply trying to be paid “once” for that service - even though the financially viable shipper or consignee may have to pay twice with the bankrupt/insolvent third party absconding. The purpose of this article is generally to provide some “front-end” practical suggestions to shippers/ consignees in how to avoid being in court on one of these claims in the …

The Impact Of Hours-Of-Service Regulations On Transportation Productivity And Safety: A Summary Of Findings From The Literature, Hokey Min Oct 2009

The Impact Of Hours-Of-Service Regulations On Transportation Productivity And Safety: A Summary Of Findings From The Literature, Hokey Min

Journal of Transportation Management

Since driver fatigue has known to be the primary cause of serious truck crashes, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has attempted to implement new hours-of-service (HOS) regulations that aimed to promote safer driving environments. The new HOS regulations effective on October T‘ of2005, however, may lead to substantial cost increases for the trucking industry which will in turn hurt shippers and ultimately customers. For instance, motor carriers may need to hire additional drivers to comply with new HOS regulations requiring that drivers be placed out of service until they accumulated enough off-duty time. In particular, off-duty breaks required …

A Longitudial Study Of Private Warehouse Investment Strategies, Jonathan W. Kohn, Michael A. Mcginnis, John E. Spillan Oct 2009

A Longitudial Study Of Private Warehouse Investment Strategies, Jonathan W. Kohn, Michael A. Mcginnis, John E. Spillan

Journal of Transportation Management

This article revisits private warehouse investment decision making, a topic previously examined in 1989 by McGinnis, Kohn, and Myers (1990). Since then there has been a substantial amount of discussion regarding the scope and nature of logistics /supply chain management. In particular the roles of private, contract, and public warehousing has been discussed, increased emphasis on financial performance and strategic decision making may have altered the criteria for investment decisions in private warehousing, increased coordination of supply chains may have altered the relative importance of private, contract, and private warehousing, and increasing emphasis on controlling inventory investment may have shifted …

A Triadic View Of Truck Driver Satisfaction, Stephen A. Lemay, Zachary Williams, Michael Carver Oct 2009

A Triadic View Of Truck Driver Satisfaction, Stephen A. Lemay, Zachary Williams, Michael Carver

Journal of Transportation Management

In this research, the authors surveyed three groups concerning job satisfaction: experienced drivers, new drivers, and managers. Statistical tests were conducted using a sample of 196 new drivers, 145 experienced drivers, and 59 managers from a large TL firm based in the U.S. The results suggest that many discrepancies exist on driver satisfaction among the three perspectives. In particular, new drivers provide managers with opportunities and challenges for satisfaction. Given the current state of the trucking industry, managers will likely benefit from approaching this segment of drivers differently to meet their expectations and keep them from leaving their firms.

An Archaeological Perspective On The Andean Concept Of Camaquen: Thinking Through Late Pre-Columbian Ofrendas And Huacas, Tamara L. Bray Oct 2009

An Archaeological Perspective On The Andean Concept Of Camaquen: Thinking Through Late Pre-Columbian Ofrendas And Huacas, Tamara L. Bray

Anthropology Faculty Research Publications

Ethnohistoric sources suggest that the indigenous inhabitants of Andean South America saw both people and things as animated or enlivened by a common vital force (camaquen). In approaching the subject of camaquen archaeologically, I attempt to place objects and their materiality at the analytical center, rather than the normally privileged ethnohistoric or ethnographic data, in order to see what new insights into the nature of precolumbian ontologies might be gained from ‘thinking through things.’ In this, I follow recent theories premised on the idea that the traditional segregation of concepts and things may hinder understanding of alternative worlds. The study …

Motivational Profiles And Their Associations With Achievement Outcomes, Bo Shen, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Mariane Fahlman Oct 2009

Motivational Profiles And Their Associations With Achievement Outcomes, Bo Shen, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Mariane Fahlman

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

With the belief that theoretical integration in motivation may help us better understand motivational behavior, we designed this study to explore adolescents’ motivational profiles and their associations with knowledge acquisition, leisure-time exercise behaviors, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Middle school students from a large urban inner-city school district (N = 603, ages 12–14) completed questionnaires assessing motivational constructs and leisure-time exercise behavior. Knowledge and cardiorespiratory fitness were also assessed with a knowledge test and the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) test, respectively. Using hierarchical cluster analysis, we found that students’ motivation in physical education could be explained from a multi-theoretical …

Motivational Factors Influencing Sport Spectator Involvement At Ncaa Division Ii Basketball Games, Yun Seok Choi, Jeffrey J. Martin, Meungguk Park, Taeho Yoh

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivational factors affecting sport spectator involvement using 304 spectators from NCAA Division II men's and women's basketball games. Two aspects (behavioral and socio-psychological) of sport spectator involvement were examined. The results revealed that spectators at intercollegiate basketball games had a higher level of socio-psychological involvement than behavioral involvement. A series of multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the affects of sociomotivational factors (perceived value, fan identification, involvement opportunity, and reference groups) on sport spectator involvement. Fan identification, involvement opportunity, and reference groups were identified as influential factors that had a …

The Effectiveness Of Sexual Assault Services In Multi-Service Agencies, Debra Patterson Sep 2009

The Effectiveness Of Sexual Assault Services In Multi-Service Agencies, Debra Patterson

Social Work Faculty Publications

Sexual assault is a pervasive social problem with 18% of women and 3% of men experiencing a completed or attempted assault during their lifetime. More than half of victimizations occur before the survivor reaches the age of eighteen (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). Research also shows that twothirds of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the survivor, such as an acquaintance, friend or intimate partner. In fact, approximately 15% of sexual assaults are committed by an intimate partner. Many sexual assault survivors experience multiple negative outcomes such as psychological distress, physical health problems, and difficulties in life functioning (Gutner, …

Us Foreign Trade Zones As The Secret Lover: Is Uncle Sam Faithful To Tariff Elimination?, Richard J. Smith Jul 2009

Us Foreign Trade Zones As The Secret Lover: Is Uncle Sam Faithful To Tariff Elimination?, Richard J. Smith

Social Work Faculty Publications

For centuries the nations and principalities of the world have engaged in trading schemes to boost exports. Conquest, protection of domestic supply through tariffs and eroding domestic currency are all part of the historic policy harem. The United States has a foreign trade zone program. Who knew? FTZs evoke images of women locked inside a dark sweatshop in a jungle making hoodies for football fans. While these "developing" countries have unambiguously embraced FTZs as an export strategy, Uncle Sam has played the unwilling suitor to the concept, making the FTZ a common law revealed preference while engaged with but not …

Quel Test For Two Linear Restrictions In The Nonlinear Models, Krishna K. Saha May 2009

Quel Test For Two Linear Restrictions In The Nonlinear Models, Krishna K. Saha

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

An alternative Wald type test called the quel test is developed for two linear restrictions by finding the critical region based on the quel utilizing the repeated values of estimated parameters of interest under the null. Simulation shows evidence that the full quel test performs best in that it holds nominal level well and shows monotonic increasing power properties.
