Indigenous Citizens And Black Republicans: Continuities And Evolutions Of Subalterns’ Political Visions And Repertoires In Post-Independence Colombia And Mexico, James Sanders

This essay focuses on how Indigenous peoples in Colombia and Mexico sought to create a distinct politics, in which they could protect their colonial identities and local customs, within the new independent and republican nation-states of the Americas. Indigenous communities succeed in combining universal republican citizenship and particular colonial identities, maintaining more of a connection with the past, but nevertheless creating innovative solutions to adapt to the republican present. In contrast, popular African-Colombian actors eagerly embraced the possibilities of citizenship in new republican nation states, seeking to abandon a colonial identity associated with slavery. Authors looking at the development of the field of Mormon history have often evaluated it in terms of historiography—as its progression from the domain of amateurs to the output of academics. However, studies of the composition and development of the larger history profession have focused on the discipline's fragmentation and the formation of an "archival divide" between those that write history and those collecting and preserving its sources. Seriously, it feels that way when you walk by those long-neglected microcards. Very few cataloging records exist so discoverability is close to zero, and if there are records how do you read the cards? Wouldn't it be great if you could bring that microcard back to life so the content could be used? Good news! A collaborative open-access effort to do so is underway. Research using presidential records can be quite complex. Presidential records are mix of public and private materials, and are located in a variety of archival, library, and museum settings. Understanding a little bit about the history of presidential records helps researchers understand where they can find information about the topics they seek to understand or explain. In this chapter I argue that teaching, as we now understand the term, is historically and cross-culturally very rare. It appears to be unnecessary to transmit culture or to socialize children. Children are, on the other hand, primed by evolution to be avid observers, imitators, players and helpers—roles that reveal the profoundly autonomous and self-directed nature of culture acquisition (Lancy in press a). And yet, teaching is ubiquitous throughout the modern world—at least among the middle to upper class segment of the population. The 20^th century saw the rise and development of the archival profession. This paper examines what it means to be a profession and how the characteristics of a profession began to manifest themselves in the archival community using the Utah State Archives as a case study. The Utah State Archives reflects many of the national trends towards professionalization as it was initially part of the Utah State Historical Society and eventually became its own entity.

The public library in Utah and its acceptance as a public institution is the subject of this thesis. For present purposes, public libraries will be defined as those open to all, those having general collections of books, and those which circulate their books among the public. This thesis does not treat church, school, college, industrial, medical, law, and special libraries, except as they functioned as public libraries.

Information on the Future Homemakers of America at the national, state, and local level was studied and compiled, such as publications, scrapbooks, personal material, and other records.

It was found that the Utah organization of the Future Homemakers of America has followed the nationally outlined program for projects, activities, and meetings. The projects worked on within the state seem to have supported the eight stated purposes of the Future Homemakers.

China has always been an agricultural country, but she failed to improve in techniques of cultivation as the time passed by. Borrowing is of great importance in meeting local revenue shortages. Philadelphia began the history of local borrowing by financing the construction of a water system in 1789, from a loan of $150,000. By 1843, the seventeen largest cities had an outstanding indebtedness of $125.5 million. In the 1840's and 1850's cities and counties borrowed to construct public works, and aid in the building of railroads. They defaulted on their loans frequently. In spite of the low state of municipal credit, state governments enacted general legislation by which the local governments were granted greater freedom in borrowing. But after the Civil …
