Analog Least Mean Square Loop For Self-Interference Cancellation: A Practical Perspective, Anh Tuyen Le, Le Chung Tran, Xiaojing Huang, Y. Jay Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Self-interference (SI) is the key issue that prevents in-band full-duplex (IBFD) communications from being practical. Analog multi-tap adaptive filter is an efficient structure to cancel SI since it can capture the nonlinear components and noise in the transmitted signal. Analog least mean square (ALMS) loop is a simple adaptive filter that can be implemented by purely analog means to sufficiently mitigate SI. Comprehensive analyses on the behaviors of the ALMS loop have been published in the literature. This paper proposes a practical structure and presents an implementation of the ALMS loop. By employing off-the-shelf components, a prototype of the ALMS …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Thin-walled square and circular hollow steel tubes are designed to support the permanent and construction loads of several upper composite floors before filling the concrete into the tubes to form concrete-filled double steel tubular (CFDST) columns. The influences of preloads acting on the steel tubes on the structural responses of slender square CFDST columns have not been investigated either experimentally or numerically. This paper presents a fiber-based computational model for the determination of the interaction behavior of local and global buckling in axially and eccentrically loaded CFDST thin-walled square slender columns including preload effects. The computational modeling method accounts for …

Analog Least Mean Square Loop For Self-Interference Cancellation In In-Band Full-Duplex Systems, Anh Tuyen Le, Le Chung Tran, Xiaojing Huang, Y. Jay Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Analog Least Mean Square (ALMS) loop is a promising method to cancel self-interference (SI) in in-band full-duplex (IBFD) systems. In this talk, the steady state analyses of the residual SI powers in both analog and digital domains are derived in frequency domain. It is proved that the ALMS loop amplifies the frequency components of the residual SI at the edges of the signal spectrum in the analog domain, but the matched filter in the receiver chain reduces this effect. This results in a significant improvement of the interference suppression ratio in the digital domain before information data detection. The lower …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Square concrete-filled double steel tubular (CFDST) beam-columns consisting of an internal circular steel tube have increasingly been utilized in composite building structures because of their high structural performance. This paper describes experimental and numerical studies on the structural responses of square thin-walled CFDST columns loaded eccentrically. Tests on twenty short square CFDST columns were undertaken that included sixteen columns under eccentric loading and four columns under concentric loading. The parameters examined in the experiments included the cross-sectional dimensions, the width-to-thickness ratios of outer and internal tubes and loading eccentricity. The measured ultimate strengths, load-shortening responses, load-lateral displacement curves, stress-strain curves …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

High-strength square concrete-filled double steel tubular (CFDST) slender beam-columns with a circular internal steel tube subjected to eccentric loads may undergo interaction local-global buckling. No computational studies on the interaction local-global buckling of slender square CFDST beam-columns have been reported and their behavior has not been fully understood. This paper describes a mathematical model for the simulation of the interaction local-global buckling behavior of square high-strength CFDST slender beam-columns under axial compression in combination with uniaxial bending. The mathematical model is formulated by the fiber approach, accounting for confinement provided by the internal circular steel tube, and geometric and material …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Analog least mean square (ALMS) loop is a simple and efficient adaptive filter to cancel self-interference (SI) in in-band full-duplex (IBFD) radios. This paper proposes a practical structure and presents an implementation of the ALMS loop. By employing off-the-shelf components, a prototype of the ALMS loop including two taps is implemented. The prototype is evaluated in IBFD systems which have 20 MHz and 50 MHz bandwidths, respectively, with the carrier frequency of 2.4 GHz. The performance of the prototype with different roll-off factors of the transmit pulse shaping filter is also examined. Experimental results show that the ALMS loop can …

Analog Least Mean Square Loop For Self-Interference Cancellation In Generalized Continuous Wave Sar, Anh Tuyen Le, Yijiang Nan, Le Chung Tran, Xiaojing Huang, Y J. Guo, J (Yiannis) Vardaxoglou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Generalized continuous wave synthetic aperture radar (GCW-SAR) is a promising new imaging radar system since it applies the full-duplex (FD) transmission technique to achieve continuous signaling in order to overcome several fundamental limitations of the conventional pulsed SARs. As in any FD wireless communication system, self-interference (SI) is also a key problem which can impact on the GCW-SAR system. In this paper, the analog least mean square (ALMS) loop in the radio frequency domain is adopted to cancel the SI for a GCW-SAR system with periodic chirp signaling. The average residual SI power after the ALMS loop is analyzed theoretically …

Axial Load-Bending Moment Diagrams Of Gfrp Reinforced Columns And Gfrp Encased Square Columns, Jim Youssef, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) pultruded materials are available in a wide variety of shapes, including bars, I-sections, C-sections and other structural sections. Due to their high durability, low self-weight and reduced maintenance costs, these FRP materials are becoming a competitive option for replacing steel as structural materials especially in corrosive environments. This paper summarizes an experimental program on the axial and flexural behaviour of square concrete members reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and embedded with pultruded GFRP structural sections under different loading conditions. Furthermore, an analytical model is presented to predict the axial load-bending moment interaction diagrams …

Behavior Of Hybrid Frp-Concrete-Steel Double-Skin Tubular Columns With A Square Outer Tube And A Circular Innert Tube Subjected To Axial Compression, Tao Yu, J G. Teng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Hybrid fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) concrete steel, double skin tubular columns (DSTCs) are a new form of hybrid columns. The most common sectional form of hybrid DSTCs consists of a layer of concrete sandwiched between a circular inner steel tube and a circular outer FRP tube whose fiber directions are close to the hoop detection to provide effective confinement to the concrete. Much recent research has been conducted on circular hybrid DSTCs, which has demonstrated that the combination of the three constituent materials leads to several advantages not available with existing forms of columns. In practical applications, for aesthetic and other …

Performance Of Cfrp Wrapped Square Reinforced Concrete Columns Subjected To Eccentric Loading, Ida Bagus Rai Widiarsa, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Strengthening concrete columns with fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) has been studied extensively, but the majority of published studies have focused on circular columns. Most concrete columns in the field have square or rectangular cross sections and resist eccentric loading as well. The objective of this study is to investigate the performance of square reinforced concrete (RC) columns wrapped with carbon FRP subjected to eccentric loading. The influence of two parameters was studied including the number of FRP layers and the magnitude of eccentricity. Compression testing was conducted on twelve short square RC columns wrapped with CFRP composites. The columns had a …

Strengthening Square Reinforced Concrete Columns By Circularisation And Frp Confinement, Thong Minh Pham, Viet Le Doan, Muhammad N. Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A technique called circularisation where segmental circular concrete covers made of different concrete strengths (40 MPa, 80 MPa and 100 MPa) was used to change a square column to a circular column. The applicability of the circularisation method was experimentally studied for a wide range of concrete strengths (from 40 MPa to 100 MPa). The behaviour of the strengthened specimens under different loading conditions including concentric loading, eccentric loading (25 mm and 50 mm) and flexural bending is investigated. The experimental results demonstrate that using high strength concrete (HSC) for the additional covers to strengthen existing square reinforced concrete (RC) …

Behaviour Of Cfrp Wrapped Square Rc Columns Under Eccentric Loading, Xu Lei, Thong Minh Pham, Muhammad N. Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is an excellent material to strengthen existing structures. However, the confinement efficiency of FRP - confined square columns is relatively low compared to circular columns due to stress concentration at the sharp corners. This paper presents a new techniqu e aimed to maximise the efficiency of FRP confinement for square concrete columns : circularisation using segmental circular concrete covers . Sixteen square reinforced concrete columns were cast. Four were used as a reference group; four were rounded 20 mm at each corner and wrapped with three layers of CFRP simulating the conventional methods; the rest eight …

Hierarchical Anatomical Brain Networks For Mci Prediction By Partial Least Square Analysis, Luping Zhou, Yaping Wang, Yang Li, Pew-Thian Yap, Dinggang Shen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Owning to its clinical accessibility, T1-weighted MRI has been extensively studied for the prediction of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The tissue volumes of GM, WM and CSF are the most commonly used measures for MCI and AD prediction. We note that disease-induced structural changes may not happen at isolated spots, but in several inter-related regions. Therefore, in this paper we propose to directly extract the inter-region connectivity based features for MCI prediction. This involves constructing a brain network for each subject, with each node representing an ROI and each edge representing regional interactions. This network is …

The Empty Square Of The Occupation, Marcelo G. Svirsky

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

This paper is an attempt to implement Gilles Deleuze's theory of the series and the event, and the related function of the empty square (as formulated primarily in The Logic of Sense), in relation to the geopolitical regime comprising 'Israel proper' and the system of occupation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The purpose of this exercise is to help establish a practical access to Deleuze's philosophies, and to offer a clinical account of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Impact Of Signaling Schemes On Iterative Linear Minimum-Mean-Square-Error Detection, Li Ping, Jun Tong, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we study the iterative detection problem for a coded system with multi-ary modulation. We show that, with iterative linear minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) detection, superposition coded modulation (SCM) can provide performance superior to that with other traditional signaling schemes used in trellis coded modulation (TCM) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). This finding provides a useful guideline for system design considering inter-symbol interference (ISI) and other forms of interference. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the iterative LMMSE detection with different signaling schemes. © 2008 IEEE.

Performance Analysis Of Multi-Ary Systems With Iterative Linear Minimum-Mean-Square-Error Detection, Li Ping, Jun Tong, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper is concerned with coded multi-ary systems over linear channels. Based on a semi-analytical evolution technique, the impact of signaling schemes on the performance of low-cost iterative linear minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) detection is studied. It is shown that superposition coded modulation (SCM) maximizes the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of LMMSE detectors. Consequently, SCM may potentially outperform other conventional signaling schemes when LMMSE detectors are used. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical analysis. © 2008 IEEE.
