Evaluating The Applicability Of Hernando De Soto's Theories In Context Of Bangladesh's Informal Housing Sector, Md Mohotasim R. Khan
Evaluating The Applicability Of Hernando De Soto's Theories In Context Of Bangladesh's Informal Housing Sector, Md Mohotasim R. Khan
2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects
This research project examines Bangladesh's urban informal housing sector, aiming to understand the dynamics considering Hernando de Soto's theories, as articulated in "The Other Path." With 52% of urban residents living in slums, the study adopts a mixed-method approach, analyzing De Soto's framework, conducting literature reviews, case studies, and utilizing secondary data on urban informal housing. The objective is to identify structural and operational aspects of informal housing in Bangladesh and compare these with De Soto's observations in Peru. The significance is underscored by its focus on socio-economic perspectives, offering insights into the informal housing sector's impact on development indicators. …

ABSTRACT
L2 ACQUISTION OF KOREAN:
PHONOLOGY AND PROSODY
Angel Ray, INTS
The University of Texas at Arlington, 2024
Faculty Mentor: Daniel Scarpace and Hyuna Choi
Learning Korean as a second language (L2) has many challenges for a native (L1) non-
native speaker. There is a new alphabet, word order, and new sounds that English does not
have. Additionally, pronunciation and prosody are among the hardest aspects of the
language to learn and master. Especially if one's native language is not tonal or does not
have similar sounds in their inventory. The new sounds that a new language introduces can
be …
Anxious Scrolling: Prosocial Behavior Social Media Content Implications, Brianda P. Rocha Hernandez
Anxious Scrolling: Prosocial Behavior Social Media Content Implications, Brianda P. Rocha Hernandez
2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects
This study explores the effects of exposure to prosocial social media videos on anxiety. In this modern age of social media, many people have reported that their mental health is negatively influenced by social media. Many social media videos that millions of people are exposed to could contain hateful or dangerous content that can negatively impact a person’s mental state. Past research has not mentioned the effects of prosocial social media videos on anxiety, but related papers have been published. Prosocial behavior is behavior that is described as helpful, and positive, and promotes a welcoming social community. In related research, …
Ratings Creep: The Increase In Offensive Content In Movies Over Time, Alexandria N. Tatum
Ratings Creep: The Increase In Offensive Content In Movies Over Time, Alexandria N. Tatum
2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects
Aggression, influenced by a range of factors including media exposure, remains a significant societal concern. Drawing from Bandura's social cognitive theory, it is important to examine violence in media because its exposure can have a long-term effect on the viewers. Furthermore, studies suggest a correlation between media exposure and aggressive behavior, emphasizing the need for comprehensive analysis of content portrayal. To regulate exposure to offensive content, movies are usually ranked using the MPAA’s rating system. Yet, there has been an observed ratings creep in this system (i.e., the progressive escalation of offensive content in films). The current study hypothesizes that …
The Impact Of Website Interface Micro Animations On User Perceptions Of Trust, Credibility, And Design Quality, Lydia F. Burge
The Impact Of Website Interface Micro Animations On User Perceptions Of Trust, Credibility, And Design Quality, Lydia F. Burge
2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects
Animation is increasingly considered an important aspect of quality website design. Although research indicates the positive effects well-crafted visual design can have on user perceptions of a website, there is little research investigating animation’s effects on user perceptions. Adopting an experimental design, this study examines the effects of interface micro animation on users’ perceptions of design quality, credibility, and trust in a website. After viewing a series of identical hypothetical nonprofit organization websites, participants were divided into two groups for the last website. One group was presented with a website incorporating interface micro animations and the other with the same …
Urban Harmony: Exploring The Interplay Of New Urbanism Qualities On Economic Prosperity And Psychological Wellbeing In Contemporary Cities, Crew T. Borgeson
Urban Harmony: Exploring The Interplay Of New Urbanism Qualities On Economic Prosperity And Psychological Wellbeing In Contemporary Cities, Crew T. Borgeson
2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects
Now that most people live in urban places, answering which urbanism best provides citizen well-being becomes increasingly important. After nearly a century of suburban development, the significant drawbacks of urban sprawl are widely documented, namely the unsustainability and social impacts they incur. Many American cities, however, continue to chiefly expand in this way. What if cities were to make decisions not based on the status quo of today’s building codes but instead drew inspiration from great historical cities, applying their lessons to the unique challenges of the 21st century?
The New Urbanism movement aims to identify and incorporate the elements …
Boiling Behind Bars: Exploring The Hidden Toll Of Extreme Heat On Mental Health In Texas Prisons, Sandra K. Miller
Boiling Behind Bars: Exploring The Hidden Toll Of Extreme Heat On Mental Health In Texas Prisons, Sandra K. Miller
Social Work Theses
The State of Texas supports the largest prison system in the US and held 132,859 people in 100 units scattered across the state as of December 2023. Approximately 70% of Texas prison beds are not air conditioned, despite the state’s reputation for dangerously hot, humid summers. The State has officially recorded temperatures inside Texas prison facilities as high as 120 degrees with heat index values of over 150. Although there is a growing body of research on the negative physiological and psychological consequences of extreme heat among the general public, little is known about the physical and emotional toll of …
A Neuroscience-Based Curriculum For Addiction Prevention For Fourth-Grade Students, Paola Andrea Benitez
A Neuroscience-Based Curriculum For Addiction Prevention For Fourth-Grade Students, Paola Andrea Benitez
Social Work Theses
Substance use is one of the main problems affecting adolescents and young adults. While the consumption of alcohol has decreased, the consumption of marijuana has increased rampantly due to youth's positive perception after being legalized in 24 states with no clear message of the many adverse effects this drug causes. Different approaches to prevention have been used throughout the years: scare-led tactics, socio-emotional learning skills, and neuroscience-based curriculums. Since substance use results from the conjunction of different biopsychosocial factors that lead to this relapsing brain disease, the solution should integrate different preventive solutions as well. Public policy, schools, social workers, …
Unveiling The Therapeutic Garden Experience For People With Schizophrenia At A Rehabilitation In North Texas, Jeevita Sai Paspuneti
Unveiling The Therapeutic Garden Experience For People With Schizophrenia At A Rehabilitation In North Texas, Jeevita Sai Paspuneti
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses
Therapeutic gardens have numerous benefits, including pain reduction, improved attention, stress reduction, and medical reduction (Urban et al.,2018). Green spaces have been shown to improve the physical, mental, social, and emotional health and well-being of those staying in healthcare facilities (Urban et al.; Greening,2022). Since the 1980s, research studies have discussed the therapeutic benefits of landscape design at healthcare facilities and the importance of sustainable practices in high-performance landscape design. Many successful and expensive landscape projects have been designed and constructed on hospital sites using healing gardens or sustainable strategies (Kaplan et al. S., 1989). However, researchers suggest additional empirical …
Examining Working Memory Precision Estimates As An Individual Difference, Stephen A. Campbell
Examining Working Memory Precision Estimates As An Individual Difference, Stephen A. Campbell
Psychology Theses
Working memory (WM) capacity has remained a central topic of individual differences research due to its ability predict performance in various cognitive domains and higher-cognitive abilities. While studies performing individual differences research with WM capacity are common, there are comparatively few studies investigating individual differences with WM precision. The present study examined WM precision as an individual difference, by examining the psychometrics of the modeled precision parameter derived from the Standard Mixture Model, investigating the relationship between precision for different feature types (e.g., color and spatial location), and looking at the relationship between precision and a well-known correlate of WM …
Gaps And Overlaps In Conversation: Analyses Of Differentiating Factors, David W. Edwards
Gaps And Overlaps In Conversation: Analyses Of Differentiating Factors, David W. Edwards
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations
Human social behavior relies on communication, and much of that communication occurs in conversation. A crucial feature of conversation is turn-taking, the (usually) orderly pattern of listening and speaking that humans employ in conversation. In analyzing details of actual conversations, Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson (1974) launched the field of Conversation Analysis by outlining a set of observations of turn-taking behavior and by proposing a list of rules to explain that behavior. They noted that the vast majority of transitions from one speaker to another happen with very little gap or overlap (Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson 1974: 700–701). More recently, researchers …
Attraction Effects In Referential Dependencies, Emily Graham
Attraction Effects In Referential Dependencies, Emily Graham
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations
This dissertation explores the differences in the real-time processing of long-distance dependencies and how the processing of these dependencies functions within a cue-based retrieval model. During subject-verb agreement (SVA) comprehension, the processing of the verb is influenced by attractor noun phrases (NPs) that cannot control agreement. Referential dependencies, however, are less susceptible to such attraction effects. Many studies examining ungrammatical sentences in which a reflexive or pronoun mismatches with its antecedent in number/gender have indicated that the processing of these referentially dependent elements is largely uninfluenced by grammatically unavailable attractor NPs. These disparities have been taken to indicate that SVA …
Critical Convergence: Mapping The Boundaries Of How Faculty Interrogate Whiteness In The Geoscience Educational Landscape, James E. Hobbs
Critical Convergence: Mapping The Boundaries Of How Faculty Interrogate Whiteness In The Geoscience Educational Landscape, James E. Hobbs
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations
This study examined the role of faculty members in interrogating whiteness within geoscience education. The dominant reliance on whiteness as the primary way of knowing in geoscience education has long perpetuated a singular perspective that serves as a mechanism for reinforcing existing power structures rooted in white supremacy. Drawing on tenets from Critical whiteness Studies, Curriculum Theory, and Transformative Learning Theory, this research investigated U.S. higher education faculty members' strategies and challenges in disrupting whiteness within the geoscience curriculum.
Through critical qualitative narrative inquiry, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with geoscience faculty members across multiple institutions across the United …

The Way Of Eldering: Spiritual Maturation Across The Lifespan, Kineret Yardena
Social Work Theses
Background and Objectives
People in midlife are often encumbered with uncertainty about how to transition toward later life without regret. Many sense the need to spiritually mature as they age, but lack practical guidance. Elders are those in later life who have made this transition and who have become sources of wisdom, nurturance and guidance for those younger than they. This phenomenological study explores the spiritual maturation journey of eldering.
Research Design and Methods
Ten people who were identified as elders took part in intuitive life story interviews. Using Story Method, this phenomenological study sought to identify key themes in …
Why Are We Creatives? Understanding The Psychology Of Creativity Between Children And Adults With References To Leonardo Da Vinci And Michelangelo Buonarroti, Jordyn R. Garca
2023 Fall Honors Capstone Projects
This paper examines the differences in creativity between children and adults, including certain components that can influence creativity, or in certain instances, can also diminish it. With the support of biographers, clinical psychologists, and scholars, this paper also includes information regarding the lives of two of the world’s most well-known artists, and in certain instances the challenges they faced regarding childhood and mental health. Growing up, it is often encouraged that children should develop their creativity and learn to make their own decisions without fear of failure. However, it is not commonly accepted in society for an individual to want …

Modeling Land Use Change Using Spatial Statistics And Spatial Panel Data Regression In Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area (1990 - 2020), Ali Behseresht
Public Affairs Dissertations
In this dissertation research, we explored land use change for Activity and Residential land uses in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area (DFW) from 1990 to 2020 in association with spatial and socioeconomic factors. It aims to study three aspects of land use change: dynamics, drivers, and impacts. The research started with three hypotheses, all proven and accepted by the research findings. We reviewed the relevant literature from five aspects of land use change: theories, models, methods, drivers, and impacts. Based on the reviewed literature, the land use change model we discussed is an economics-based spatiotemporal modeling approach in which the …
"A Show That Proves The Worst Monsters Are Real": Media And Social Media Impact On Criminal Trials And Post-Conviction Guilt As Perceived By Criminal Justice Students., Jennifer Leigh Patterson
"A Show That Proves The Worst Monsters Are Real": Media And Social Media Impact On Criminal Trials And Post-Conviction Guilt As Perceived By Criminal Justice Students., Jennifer Leigh Patterson
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses
This study, using survey data collected in 2022, investigates how consuming true crime media, from media such as podcasts, influences fear and anxiety among criminal justice students. In addition, the relationship between viewing criminal trials in real time and forming opinions different from the sentencing juries is assessed. Results suggest that there is no significant relationship between the consumption of true crime media and fear or anxiety. Moreover, viewing criminal trials in real time does not have a signficant effect on the formation of opinons that differ from criminal juries. Limitations, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.
Semantico-Pragmatic Aspects Of The Metalinguistic Uses Of Comparatives In Mandarin Chinese And English, Meng Yang
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations
This dissertation examines a group of Metalinguistic Comparatives (MCs) in Mandarin Chinese, exploring what they suggest about the universality of comparatives. I show that Chinese MCs encode a more fine-grained scalarity of the subjective attitude conveyed, which varies in orientation, i.e., positive or negative, and strength, i.e., subtle or strong. By analyzing their uses in conversational settings, I claim that MCs are pragmatical devices for speakers to reject or rectify an utterance. In examining the shared Chinese ‘than’ marker in both Negative MCs (NegMCs) and Rhetorical Comparatives (RCs), I show that both subtypes are comparatives with a contrastive and negative …
Switchin’ Up: The Effect Of Code-Switching On Black Professionals In Predominantly White Organizations, Christina G. Roach
Switchin’ Up: The Effect Of Code-Switching On Black Professionals In Predominantly White Organizations, Christina G. Roach
Communication Theses
This study explored how highly educated Black professionals holding at least a four-year degree view use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in relation to their ethnic identity. Additionally, the study investigated whether code-switching impacts participants’ organizational identification or their connectedness to ethnic identity. Through interviews, I uncovered that although 3 of 12 participants indicated that use of AAVE felt natural to them, 6 participants use it infrequently or not at all. Surprisingly, using Standard American English (SAE) had little to no effect on most participants’ feelings of connectedness to their ethnic identity. This research also uncovered that though all …

“My Mother Hates Her Body, She Swears She Loves Mine”: The Effects Of Socialization Through Mothering On Daughters’ Body Talk And Intuitive Eating., Andrea N. Jenkins
Sociology & Anthropology Theses
This study examines the effects of early socialization about the body within mother/daughter relationships and its impact on the practice of Intuitive Eating (a practice of listening to one’s own body regarding food, rather than following dieting rules). Though researchers have widely explored mother/daughter relationships and dieting, this study seeks to build on this previous research, while also examining it through a new lens of adult women’s experiences with Intuitive Eating. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 adult women who identify as Intuitive Eaters. Interviews focused on answering three research questions; (1) how does early socialization about food and the …

On the University of Texas at Arlington campus, investing in green infrastructure is critical for managing stormwater and heat stress today and addressing the emerging challenges caused by a changing climate: shifting precipitation patterns, “cloudbursts” or flash floods, and more frequent and severe extreme heat events. In 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provided technical assistance to UTA as part of the tenth anniversary of the Campus RainWorks Challenge, a national design competition that advances green infrastructure design on college and university campuses across the country. This report builds on UTA’s extensive engagement with the competition and envisions the campus …
Seeing The Signs: An Analysis Of Early Onset Of Violence And Desistance Amongst Serious Juvenile Offenders, Tailar Brown
Seeing The Signs: An Analysis Of Early Onset Of Violence And Desistance Amongst Serious Juvenile Offenders, Tailar Brown
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses
There has been increasing literature on juvenile delinquency and the factors that influence deviant behavior among adolescents. However, there has been little exploration of the effects of early displays of violent behavior on desistance for those identified as serious juvenile offenders (SJOs). In order to create effective intervention programs and lower recidivism rates among this population, it is essential to comprehend the effects of early instances of violent behavior on SJOs' desistance. Using longitudinal data from the Pathways to Desistance Study, this project explored the connection between early displays of violent behavior (i.e., fights at school, violence against siblings, planning …
Nonprofit Marketing And Communication Personnel Job Satisfaction: The Effects Of Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity, Rachel L. Swink
Nonprofit Marketing And Communication Personnel Job Satisfaction: The Effects Of Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity, Rachel L. Swink
Communication Theses
Job satisfaction is becoming increasingly important in efforts to retain employees across all sectors. The nonprofit sector is facing greater challenges than ever before in competing for and retaining adequate talent. The nonprofit sector provides unconventional benefits such as hybrid office models, paid time off, and others to improve job satisfaction. While nonprofits receive high job satisfaction, turnover is a big issue, even among marketing and communication teams which are often underfunded, understaffed, and unappreciated. Marketing and communication teams play a unique role within nonprofits, as they are frequently pulled in different directions to accomplish tasks that may not necessarily …

Crime Across The Ages: An Examination Of Intergenerational Crime And Recidivism Among Serious Juvenile Offenders, A'Maiya Brown
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses
Although prior research has studied whether parents and their criminal histories impact a juvenile’s likelihood to commit crime, there has been little examination of whether the criminal histories of family members impact the likelihood of rearrest for juveniles who have already committed serious crimes. Using data from the Pathways to Desistance study (Pathways), this study examines the relationship between the criminal history of family members (i.e., mother, father, and other family members living within the home) and rearrest rates of participants. Results from negative binomial regressions reveal that the arrest records of the mother and father do have a significant …
Creative Collaboration In Rural Texas Communities, Kathryn May Lattimore Norris
Creative Collaboration In Rural Texas Communities, Kathryn May Lattimore Norris
Public Affairs Dissertations
The body of research investigating collaboration has grown exponentially in recent years with the realization of its potential in generating innovative solutions to complex problems. Even though an abundance of literature on collaboration exists, scholars have fallen short of understanding how collaboration works towards creativity. Lack of consensus on understanding how this critical construct functions has not only made furthering theory on the matter challenging for researchers, but also made recognizing, utilizing, and realizing the full benefit of collaboration difficult for practitioners. Until the ways collaboration can result in creative outcomes are better understood, practitioners will not be able to …

Deliberations Before Running Another Wikipedia Editing Assignment, Laurel Smith Stvan
Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations
In assessing a popular Open Educational Resource that instructs and is shaped by students, I weigh the costs for both instructors and students in using classroom Wikipedia editing assignments. Based on experiences from before and during the Covid era, I assess the ROI in instructor time and attention, reviewing what has worked best or been a struggle for editing projects aimed at expanding linguistics stubs. Successfully launching these engaged learning tasks encompasses two areas: filling Wikipedia content gaps and building student skills. Content gap concerns include finding relevant page topics for students to work with; recognizing constraints on biography pages …

Cambridge University Press Open Access Agreement Publications
Opinions have been divided regarding the relevance of the APA Ethics Code to non-mental health specialties and even whether the code should attempt to encompass all psychology specializations. However, these opinions have crystallized without the benefit of any appreciable empirical data, until now. This study investigates the applicability of the ethical principles and standards of the code to 398 first-person narratives of ethical incidents reported by industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists. On average, 2.8 (of the 5) principles enumerated in the code were deemed applicable to each incident, and each principle was applicable to more than half the incidents provided. Of the …

Researching Appointment Robbery: Voices From The Street, Arthur Gregory Vasquez
Public Affairs Dissertations
This dissertation is composed of three papers that will examine three topics related to the main research project of examining whether or not CPTED strategies have an effect on the decision to participate in appointment robbery. The first paper examines the difficulties in gaining access with the hard-to-reach population of active offenders. The second paper will provide examples of ethical dilemmas that the qualitative researcher faced while in the field. The third paper will explore whether or not criminals were deterred from deciding to engage in criminal activity due to an implementation of a CPTED strategy. These three papers together …
