Winston Bridges came to the campus as an assistant professor of education in 1970. He taught primarily in the area of social foundations of education. When Dean Karen Spear departed for Colorado in June 1990, Bridges—then coordinator of the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg—accepted an appointment to serve as interim dean. Bridges continued the focus on interdisciplinary studies started by deans Lowell Davis and Karen Spear. Shortly after H. William Heller arrived in the fall of 1992, Bridges was appointed associate dean. Bridges served as the chief academic officer on campus before his retirement in 2003, returning in …

The Interactive Effects Of Antisocial Personality Disorder And Court-Mandated Status On Substance Abuse Treatment Dropout, Stacey B. Daughters, Brooke A Stipelman, Marsha N. Sargeant, Randi Schuster, Marina Bornovalova, C W Lejuez
Psychology Faculty Publications
The present study sought to examine the interactive effects of court-mandated (CM) treatment and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) on treatment dropout among 236 inner-city male substance users receiving residential substance abuse treatment. Of the 236 participants, 39.4% (n = 93) met criteria for ASPD and 72.5% (n = 171) were mandated to treatment through a pretrial release-to-treatment program. Results indicated a significant interaction between ASPD and CM status, such that patients with ASPD who were voluntarily receiving treatment were significantly more likely to drop out of treatment than each of the other groups. Subsequent discrete time survival analyses …

The Clearwater Sun newspaper was published between 1914 and 1990. Few original issues prior to the 1970s exist, and issues from the earliest years (pre-1926) do not exist in microfilm. The St. Petersburg Evening Independent served as the Sunshine City’s afternoon newspaper between 1906 and 1986. Similar to the Sun, early issues rarely exist. This collection represents a small sample of original issues of the Clearwater Sun and the Evening Independent from the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the Korean War. The Poynter Library received these papers as a donation from the Tampa Bay History …

The College of Marine Science, a Tampa-based academic unit of the University of South Florida, physically resides on the St. Petersburg campus. Since its beginnings as a Marine Science Institute in the late 1960s, this unit and its mission have grown to occupy an academic department within the College of Natural Sciences, later the College of Arts and Sciences, and as a distinct college within the University. The thirteen photographic prints included in this collect represent images primarily from the early years of the St. Petersburg campus.

Identification Of Factors In Road Accidents Through In-Depth Accident Analysis, Mouyid B. Islam, Kunnawee Kanitpong
CUTR Faculty Journal Publications
The rising trend of motorization and improving socio-economic status of Thai people directly influences the aggravating road safety situation with fatalities and permanently disabled injuries of about 130,000 and 500,000 respectively over the past decades. An estimated annual cost from road crashes amounts to about US$2,500 million, 3.4 percent of Gross National Product (GNP), undoubtedly inflicts Thailand with a burning public health concern in the South East Asian region. This paper addresses an in-depth study through crash investigation and reconstruction which has not yet been practised in Thailand to identify the contributory factors in road crashes by the concerned authorities. …

Prior to deciding to propose in 2006 that the National Numeracy Network (NNN) publish a new journal for quantitative literacy with their support, the University of South Florida Libraries investigated the publication environment of the field on the Web of Science®. Reproducing part of that study in this paper, we present findings from topic searches (March 2008) for “numeracy,” “quantitative literacy,” and “statistical literacy.” These updated results include a combined bibliography of 338 peer-reviewed articles amongst 210 different journals, by 748 authors from 321 institutions in 25 countries, in a total of 87 subjects (34% of the subject classes in …

Testing Classification Systems For Reference Questions, Deborah Boran Henry, Tina M. Neville
USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications
Two reference question classification systems were tested using data from a small academic library. Results indicate that a skill/strategy based approach, rather than a system based on resources used or time allocated per question, leads to more consistent classification and provides a more accurate reflection of today's reference desk activity.
Rapid Assessment Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking In The Clearwater/Tampa Bay Area, Joan Reid
Rapid Assessment Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking In The Clearwater/Tampa Bay Area, Joan Reid
USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications
Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST) is the commercial sexual exploitation of American citizen or lawful permanent resident children. This Rapid Assessment (RA) completed in January 2008 explored the identification of DMST victims, their access to, and the delivery of victim services. Findings suggest an acute lack of awareness or understanding of DMST among professionals likely to come in contact with victims, resulting in failure to identify DMST victims. Few DMST victims are accessing existing services due to their misidentification. Exacerbating this issue is a lack of victim-centered protocols for child sex trafficking criminal cases, leading to a failure in the …
