Has Thailand Learned From The Asian Crisis Of 1997?, Kuejai Jungjaturapit Apr 2008

Has Thailand Learned From The Asian Crisis Of 1997?, Kuejai Jungjaturapit

Major Themes in Economics

Many economists have investigated the causes of the Asian crisis of 1997 in order to prevent a repeat of it. There were many issues leading to the crisis, and there is no agreement on what all the causes were. I conclude that for the case of Thailand, there were three main causes: exchange rate policy, weak financial institutions, and actions of the government. The crisis is analyzed, and the results are used to suggest ways to prevent future unnecessary recessions. Finally, the current situation in Thailand is examined to determine whether Thailand has learned from the crisis and made any …

Is Wikipedia A Credible Source For Undergraduate Economics Students?, Sam Meier

Major Themes in Economics

Scholars have debated the quality of collaborative websites such as Wikipedia.org in the 21 century. If credible, Wikipedia has the potential to share st information and stimulate creativity better than any resource the world has known. If not, Wikipedia has the potential to manipulate history. In the field of Economics, Wikipedia is an accurate source of information. While the site may omit important information, the content available was accurate throughout the duration of this study. Yet the volatile nature of the site must be considered at all times. No information is discovered in the study to suggest that Wikipedia will …

Health Care Reform: An Examination Of The Case For Individual Mandates, Sarah Schares Apr 2008

Health Care Reform: An Examination Of The Case For Individual Mandates, Sarah Schares

Major Themes in Economics

Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton has recently put forth a plan in which individuals would be required to purchase health insurance. Her plan has been the target of intense criticism. Individual mandates would target the free-riders of health care and would likely improve the health of the uninsured. Shortcomings of the mandate are the difficulty of enforcement and the unfair burden placed on lower-middle income people. Careful examination of the evidence suggests that the U.S. should not impose individual mandates for health insurance.

The Determinants Of Audit Prices For Financial Services Institutions In The United States, Kevin Swanson Apr 2008

The Determinants Of Audit Prices For Financial Services Institutions In The United States, Kevin Swanson

Major Themes in Economics

Several studies have sought to establish the link between the characteristics of a corporation and the audit fees charged by its auditor. Many studies have tried to discover whether auditor specialization affects audit fees. Other research has attempted to discover the effects of government regulation on fees. The impact of risk on audit fees has also been examined, but has proved to be an elusive topic. This study uses regression analysis to examine the effect of size and financial position on audit fees. The model shows a direct relationship between measures of both assets and revenues and the audit fees …

Online Counseling : Risks, Benefits, And Future Development, Lindsey J. Kenison-Severson Jan 2008

Online Counseling : Risks, Benefits, And Future Development, Lindsey J. Kenison-Severson

Graduate Research Papers

Online counseling started becoming popular in the mid-1990's and is a popular source of debate right now. There are a number of risks and benefits that need to be evaluated by both the counselor and client when determining the appropriateness of online counseling. There seems to be a lack of research regarding how effective online counseling is, but preliminary research seems positive in supporting the argument that relationships can be formed when using online counseling. Some individuals may be more appropriate for online counseling and some problems may be helped more effectively. Clients and counselors need to be educated about …

Character Counts! Incentive Program : Implementation And Evaluation, Julie A. Rouse

Graduate Research Papers

In order to better serve the school population, the school counselor is often called upon to deliver the counseling curriculum to all students. Data often drives the curriculum the counselor will present to the students. As a result of a program audit and perception data, a school counselor at West Elementary chose to implement a character education piece to the curriculum. Furthermore, an incentive program was added to encourage positive behavior and to recognize student achievement. Due to the age of accountability, the school counselor created a survey to assess the program. In addition to the survey, other sources of …

An Herbal Abc Book: A Contribution To Information Available To Children And Adults, Linda Jo Kirkland Jan 2008

An Herbal Abc Book: A Contribution To Information Available To Children And Adults, Linda Jo Kirkland

Graduate Research Papers

From Neanderthal to New Age times, plant medicine has been shown to be used by people seeking relief from ailments. There is a lack of information available for children to learn about the simple herbal remedies used by their ancestors even though herbal remedies are commonly used in this country. These plant remedies are both culturally and medically significant. People use herbal medicine to a great extent without consulting medical professionals. Therefore, a research based herbal ABC book would be a significant addition to children’s literature in this country, both as information for children and adults, and as a conversation …

The Roles Of Coaches And Teachers : Fostering A Climate For Motivation In An Age Of Accountability, Jocelyn Hays

Graduate Research Papers

This paper examines the difference between how a coach motivates an athlete or fosters a climate for motivation versus how a teacher motivates a student or fosters a climate for motivation. One way to examine how coaches and teachers motivate their athletes and students is to examine the roles of coaches and teachers as motivators. Examining the roles of coaches and teachers as motivators and the subsequent discussion of how the roles of coaches as motivators could inform the roles of teachers as motivators seeks to satisfy society's call for teacher accountability.

Identity In Second Language Learning: Access To The Target Language Group, Stephanie J. Marra Jan 2008

Identity In Second Language Learning: Access To The Target Language Group, Stephanie J. Marra

Graduate Research Papers

In recent years the role of identity in SLA has emerged in the literature as the linguistic community develops an understanding of the significance of identity in language learning (McKay & Wong, 1996). Norton (2000) refers to identity as “how a person understands his or her relationship to the world, how that relationship is constructed across time and space, and how the person understands possibilities for the future” (p. 5). An understanding of identity in language learning and the relationship of the language learner to the learning environment helps to illuminate what previous theories about the role of affective variables …

Using Landscape History And Baseline Data In The Restoration Of A Midwestern Savanna, Andrew P. Rayburn, Annabel L. Major Jan 2008

Using Landscape History And Baseline Data In The Restoration Of A Midwestern Savanna, Andrew P. Rayburn, Annabel L. Major

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Over one hundred and fifty years of Euro-American settlement has dramatically altered Midwestern landscapes, resulting in the widespread conversion of native habitat. Numerous opportunities to conduct ecological restoration exist within the Midwest, with the potential to increase habitat and landscape heterogeneity, secure critical ecosystem services, and provide opportunities for research and education. Site history is an important consideration for most restoration projects, and multiple sources of historical data may be required to unravel the complicated history of intensively used Midwestern landscapes. The collection of baseline data is another significant component of most restoration projects, allowing for an evaluation of community …

Pre-Settlement Vegetation At Casey's Paha State Preserve, Iowa, Reid J. Leichty, Steven H. Emerman, Lyndon R. Hawkins, Michael J. Tiano Jan 2008

Pre-Settlement Vegetation At Casey's Paha State Preserve, Iowa, Reid J. Leichty, Steven H. Emerman, Lyndon R. Hawkins, Michael J. Tiano

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Paha are loess-capped ridges standing 10-30 m above the surrounding plain of the Iowan Surface. Although Iowa was almost entirely covered with prairie and wetlands just prior to Euro-American settlement, the paha are believed to have been forested based on soil types and on early vegetation maps. The objective of this study was to find evidence that paha were forested by measuring the δ13C value of humin, the fraction of soil organic matter that is insoluble in acid and base. Previous work has shown that humin retains the δ13C signature of vegetation on a 1000-year time scale, as opposed to …

Assessment Of Smallmouth Bass Populations In Iowa Interior Rivers, Andrew C. Jansen, Michael C. Quist, Jeff Kopaska

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu are a popular sport fish throughout North America and occupy an important ecological role as top predators in aquatic systems. Despite the importance of smallmouth bass, knowledge of their population structure and dynamics in Iowa interior rivers is limited. The objective of this study was to describe population dynamics (e.g., relative abundance, size and age structure, growth, mortality) of smallmouth bass in six Iowa rivers. Smallmouth bass were sampled from the Upper Iowa, Maquoketa, and Wapsipinicon rivers in northeast Iowa and the Des Moines, Iowa, and South Skunk rivers in central Iowa using electrofishing during the …
