Alienation And Variations In Orientation To Counter Culture Values: An Empirical Study, Dennis C. Mcbride
Alienation And Variations In Orientation To Counter Culture Values: An Empirical Study, Dennis C. Mcbride
Sociology ETDs
Alienation and variations in orientation to counter culture values were investigated in a survey of University of New Mexico undergraduates. A cumulative-type attitude scale was developed to measure orientation toward counter culture values. Dean's Alienation Scale, which combines three subscales of normlessness, powerlessness and social isolation to form a total alienation scale score, was used as a measure of subjective feelings of alienation. Results of the first order multivariate analysis show a moderate positive relationship of student's counter culture orientation to a) alienation, with normlessness and powerlessness being the strongest components, and b) peer, as opposed to parent, social approval …

A State-Wide Survey Of Public Opinions Toward The University Of New Mexico, Hilary H. Horan
Communication ETDs
This field study was a survey designed to collect and analyze data regarding the public's opinion or, the University of New Mexico. The first of its kind at U.N.M., it constructed a channel of feedback from the public to the University. The information obtained by the study establishes a base for expected responses of subsequent studies. This study measured existing attitudes in relation to demographic data. A mail questionnaire was sent to a stratified random sample of 3000 derived from each of New Mexico's thirty-two counties' voting lists. The questionnaire incorporated several types of scales which were coded for computer …
A Concept Learning Model, Charles R. Sawyer
A Concept Learning Model, Charles R. Sawyer
Psychology ETDs
An analysis of rule learning (RL) data suggests that an important factor in bidimensional concept learning is the degree to which stimuli share common stimulus values. Subjects have the most difficulty with differentially assigned stimuli which have common values and with stimuli which are assigned to the same response category but have no common values. Based on these findings, an experiment was run with four bidimensional stimuli to determine how Ss will respond to non-reinforced test stimuli after the reinforcement of one or two stimuli to the same or different response categories. The data indicated that Ss responded to a …
The Establishment And Evaluation Of A Channel Of Communication Between The Faculty Of The University Of New Mexico And The Governor Of The State Of New Mexico, Richard L. Dillender
The Establishment And Evaluation Of A Channel Of Communication Between The Faculty Of The University Of New Mexico And The Governor Of The State Of New Mexico, Richard L. Dillender
Communication ETDs
Many explanations have been offered in an attempt to describe the true cause of campus unrest. Most of these reflect the needs of the examiner. It is safe to assert however that the tension and turmoil on our 'campuses evolve from several deficiencies. The subject of this thesis addresses itself to one of those weaknesses: A lack of communication between the Governor of the State of New Mexico and the faculty of the University of New Mexico.
A series of meetings was established to provide an opportunity for a group of faculty members (different each session) to discuss problems with …
The Relative Usefulness Of Exemplars And Non-Exemplars For Solving Attribute Identification Concept Tasks, Thomas C. Toppino
The Relative Usefulness Of Exemplars And Non-Exemplars For Solving Attribute Identification Concept Tasks, Thomas C. Toppino
Psychology ETDs
The effects of category label (positiveness or negativeness) and category composition (differences in the stimuli composing each category) were investigated in two experiments with concepts which were previously deemed most likely to yield a persistent advantage to positive instances. Category label effects were separated from category composition effects by using pairs of complementary concepts and requiring Ss to solve with only positive instances or only negative instances. Results showed that category composition was a more important determiner of performance than was category label. The relatively weak category label effects which were obtained were limited to specific conditions of category composition. …

The Effects Of Group Systematic Desensitization On The Symptoms Of Primary Dysmenorrhea, Steven Kenneth Reich
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group systematic desensitization on the symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea in relation to anxiety. The sample consisted of an experimental group of 12 women drawn from the University of New Mexico Student Health Center and the Presbyterian Hospital School of Practical Nursing who were treated in four sessions with group systematic desensitization focused on menstruation, and a control group drawn from the Bernalillo County Planned Parenthood Association not treated with group systematic desensitization. The experimental subjects were treated in small groups, utilizing semi-automated procedures through the use of tape recordings, …
Relationships Between Commitment, Dissatisfaction And Attrition Among Roman Catholic Priests In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Romeo Raymond Di Benedetto
Relationships Between Commitment, Dissatisfaction And Attrition Among Roman Catholic Priests In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Romeo Raymond Di Benedetto
Sociology ETDs
The motivation which led to the selection of the subject of commitment was both professional and personal. The author not only went through this process himself of commitment/decommitment to the official ministry but came to know many other such priests in his involvement with the Society of Priests For a Free Ministry. It is to the men and women of this renewal organization that this thesis is dedicated.
It is known to any "insider" of the Roman Catholic clergy that thousands of priests have long been experiencing intense and numerous frustrations. Some priests are able to satisfactorily resolve their frustrations …

A General Analysis Of Economic Indicators For New Mexico, Larry D. Adcock
A General Analysis Of Economic Indicators For New Mexico, Larry D. Adcock
Economics ETDs
The research work described in this thesis constitutes a methodology for deriving short-term economic time series indicators at the state level. A brief discussion of the need for such indicators can be found in Chapter I. Following this chapter, alternative representative series of the level of economic activity are considered. Reported wages and salaries, the dependent variable used in this research work, is discussed in relation to other potential representative series such as Personal Income, Per Capita Income, and Gross State Product.
Criteria for choosing economic time series is listed in Chapter III along with titles and comments about the …
A Budgetary Look At Public Health In New Mexico, Linda L. Deberry
A Budgetary Look At Public Health In New Mexico, Linda L. Deberry
Public Administration ETDs
Past experience in New Mexico has shown that the traditional agency line-item budget does not serve as a tool for making rational decisions about state government because it does not present the appropriate information needed by the decision-makers. To make rational decisions and policies, the Governor and the Legislature both need to know more about an agency than the cost of salaries and travel. Planning-Programming-Budgeting was introduced in New Mexico in 1969 with the hopes that it would be developed into the tool needed for making rational decisions effecting the state. According to Charles Schultze:
Much has been published on …
The Demand For Money: A Study Of Paradigms, Gray James Santoni
The Demand For Money: A Study Of Paradigms, Gray James Santoni
Economics ETDs
This thesis sets out to establish the origin of the controversy that exists with respect to the channel(s) through which monetary phenomena influence economic activity. As a result of the analysis contained in Chapter One, the origin is fixed in the 1930's and identified with the emergence of two schools of thought: Price theoretic Behaviorism and Nominalism. The behaviorists of this period argued that changes in the quantity of money affect economic activity directly as a result of the portfolio adjustments of individuals. Nominalists, on the other hand, maintained that money has meaning only in tic context of society. The …
The Effects Of Perceptual Pretraining On Concept Identification And Preference, Rene S. Silleroy
The Effects Of Perceptual Pretraining On Concept Identification And Preference, Rene S. Silleroy
Psychology ETDs
The effects of perceptual pretraining on preferences and concept identification performance in five and eight year old Ss were investigated. Perceptual pretraining consisted of unreinforced same-different judgments on stimuli varying on each of the five task dimensions. The results indicated that perceptual pretraining facilitated performance on a concept identification task with a nonpreferred relevant cue for the five year olds but not for the eight year olds. However, perceptual pretraining did not affect preference in either age group and Ss were as consistent in their preference responding before and after perceptual pretraining as was a control group that had not …
An Operational Analysis Of The Value Of The Nonoutcome Trial In Children's Discrimination Learning, Thelma A. Giomi
An Operational Analysis Of The Value Of The Nonoutcome Trial In Children's Discrimination Learning, Thelma A. Giomi
Psychology ETDs
Numerous and divergent interpretations of the value of the blank or nonoutcome trial (N) in combination with reinforcement or punishment have been suggested. In all these interpretations N is considered as a response inferred construct. The present study was conducted to directly test the value of N in differential feedback combinations and to provide a critical evaluation of these various interpretations. The experiment consisted of a two phase study employing two simultaneous discrimination problems. In the first discrimination 90 Ss learned a two choice simultaneous discrimination under one of three feedback conditions, reinforcement following a correct response and punishment following …
Toward A National Intra-Urban Mass Transportation Policy:The Need For Policy Balance, Michael V. Dunn
Toward A National Intra-Urban Mass Transportation Policy:The Need For Policy Balance, Michael V. Dunn
Public Administration ETDs
This study examines the Intra-Urban Mass Transportation System. The current, single-mode oriented, national policy of urban transportation is studied and its physical deficiencies and social ramifications are explored. This study relates to public administration in that urbanism is one of the seven “new directions” that Dwight Waldo outlines in his emphasis of professionalism in public administration.
The study was started with the hypothesis statements that there was a need for a national balanced urban transportation policy, and that the acceptance of this policy at a national level is hampered by political problems. These hypothesis statements were shown to be valid, …
Personnel Advancement Systems As Related To Management Effectiveness, David M. Davies
Personnel Advancement Systems As Related To Management Effectiveness, David M. Davies
Public Administration ETDs
The study of personnel advancement systems as related to management effectiveness in research and development (R&D) laboratories was chosen because of its relevance in this period of change in attitudes toward science and the scientific community. This change involves a shift in interest from basic scientific research to scientific and technological advances that have practical applications. Also, there is increased concern by legislators that facilities involved in federal R&D programs demonstrate sure fiscal responsibility and efficient operating methods.
The personnel advancement systems discussed in this thesis are the single - and dual - ladder systems. The single - ladder system …
Development Of A Network Based Management System For An Army Test And Evaluation Activity, Jack L. Dage
Development Of A Network Based Management System For An Army Test And Evaluation Activity, Jack L. Dage
Public Administration ETDs
As science and technology become more complex and as funding and manpower availability become tighter, especially within the Department of Defense, better management systems are imperative in order to get the required work done. Network based management systems are one of the newer and more powerful types of management systems developed to aid the manager in planning, scheduling, controlling, and reporting on his projects. Although more than 100 different network based management systems are in existence, all are based on the arrow diagram and critical path principles for planning activities. The Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and the Critical …
The Role Of Imagery In Association Formation And Stimulus Recognition, Boyd C. Tatum
The Role Of Imagery In Association Formation And Stimulus Recognition, Boyd C. Tatum
Psychology ETDs
Three experiments were performed in order to investigate the role that imagery plays in association formation and stimulus recognition. It was hypothesized that response terms of high imagery (I) value would produce enhanced recognition of the stimulus term over response terms of Low I value in a paired-associate (PA) task. Experiment I tested this hypothesis using High-I and Low-I response terms which bore a conceptual relationship to the stimulus terms. The stimuli were trigrams and the responses were nouns rated either High I or Low I. The Ss (undergraduate students) were trained under the study trial/test trial method and received …

The mid-twentieth century experienced need a rapid development of vaccines, antibiotic drug and pesticides to control disease-bearing insects. This technology, which was developed in the high income countries, has been imported to the low income countries, and this has resulted in decline of mortality. Since fertility has not declined, the low income countries are at a period of rapid population growth. This accelerating population increase in recent years in the low income countries had dramatized the need for a better understanding of it impact on social and economic development. The economic development in any given country is a process which …
Graduate Teaching Assistants:A Study Of Exploitation And Conflict In Higher Education, Lynda Hundertmark
Graduate Teaching Assistants:A Study Of Exploitation And Conflict In Higher Education, Lynda Hundertmark
Sociology ETDs
Since the post-war years of the late 1940's and early 50's, graduate teaching assistants have played an increasingly important role in public higher education. They are now an integral and essential part of undergraduate instruction of these institutions; but they are also important to the universities' obligations for research and public service. Where they are not directly responsible for instructional duties, they have relieved faculty members of most of the routine duties associated with teaching, freeing them for responsibilities which are considered more important for today's society.
Yet, even while assistants are performing many duties once reserved for faculty alone, …
