Alienation And Variations In Orientation To Counter Culture Values: An Empirical Study, Dennis C. Mcbride Dec 1972

Alienation And Variations In Orientation To Counter Culture Values: An Empirical Study, Dennis C. Mcbride

Sociology ETDs

Alienation and variations in orientation to counter culture values were investigated in a survey of University of New Mexico undergraduates. A cumulative-type attitude scale was developed to measure orientation toward counter culture values. Dean's Alienation Scale, which combines three subscales of normlessness, powerlessness and social isolation to form a total alienation scale score, was used as a measure of subjective feelings of alienation. Results of the first order multivariate analysis show a moderate positive relationship of student's counter culture orientation to a) alienation, with normlessness and powerlessness being the strongest components, and b) peer, as opposed to parent, social approval …

Anxiety And Body Image In Tattooed And Nontattooed Military Prisoners, Terry L. Habeger Dec 1972

Anxiety And Body Image In Tattooed And Nontattooed Military Prisoners, Terry L. Habeger

Student Work

Tattooing has evolved into something less than an art, particularity in western cultures, and has lost its original dignity and original significance as well (Abramson,1931). As a result, there has been a great deal of conjecture concerning the psychodynaraics of tattooing (Edgerton & Dingman,1963; Hamburger,1966; Hamburger & Lacovara,1963). The present study was an attempt to investigate the psychodynamics of tattooing through the use of one measure of anxiety and two measures of body image with tattooed and nontattooed individuals. The techniques employed were the Secord (1953) Homonym Word Association Test, the Secord-Jourard (1953) Body Cathexis Scale, and the Taylor (1953) …

A Study Of Relationships Between Machiavellianism, Dogmatism And Perceived Persuasiveness Of Messages, Marilyn Henderson Ihle Dec 1972

A Study Of Relationships Between Machiavellianism, Dogmatism And Perceived Persuasiveness Of Messages, Marilyn Henderson Ihle

Student Work

Psychologists and researchers in communication have shown much interest in personality variables such as Machiavellianism and dogmatism. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between these two traits and perceived persuasiveness of different message types. Four hundred and twenty-six students enrolled in Speech 101, Fundamentals of Speech Communication, at the University of Nebraska at Omaha were administered the Mach V scale and the Dogmatism Scale-Foxm E. They were also presented two hypothetical, news releases to read and to rate on persuasibility. One release was based cm authority and the other on reason.

The results of this study …

The Effects Of Frontal And Septal Ablation On Response Regulation In The Cat, Robert Numan Dec 1972

The Effects Of Frontal And Septal Ablation On Response Regulation In The Cat, Robert Numan

Doctoral Dissertations

The literature dealing with the behavioral effects produced by ablation of the septum, frontal cortical areas and the hippocampus is reviewed. It is concluded that the medial septum, the dorsolateral frontal cortex (and its analogue in lower forms e.g., gyrus proreus in the cat and precollosal midline cortex in the rat) and the dorsal hippocampus form a nodal point within a larger neuronal system that is involved in response regulation.

A model, describing the response regulatory processes mediated by this fronto-cortical-limbic system is proposed, Motor programs are written in the frontal cortex and temoorarily stored in hippocampal area CA3 …

A State-Wide Survey Of Public Opinions Toward The University Of New Mexico, Hilary H. Horan Nov 1972

A State-Wide Survey Of Public Opinions Toward The University Of New Mexico, Hilary H. Horan

Communication ETDs

This field study was a survey designed to collect and analyze data regarding the public's opinion or, the University of New Mexico. The first of its kind at U.N.M., it constructed a channel of feedback from the public to the University. The information obtained by the study establishes a base for expected responses of subsequent studies. This study measured existing attitudes in relation to demographic data. A mail questionnaire was sent to a stratified random sample of 3000 derived from each of New Mexico's thirty-two counties' voting lists. The questionnaire incorporated several types of scales which were coded for computer …

A Concept Learning Model, Charles R. Sawyer Nov 1972

A Concept Learning Model, Charles R. Sawyer

Psychology ETDs

An analysis of rule learning (RL) data suggests that an important factor in bidimensional concept learning is the degree to which stimuli share common stimulus values. Subjects have the most difficulty with differentially assigned stimuli which have common values and with stimuli which are assigned to the same response category but have no common values. Based on these findings, an experiment was run with four bidimensional stimuli to determine how Ss will respond to non-reinforced test stimuli after the reinforcement of one or two stimuli to the same or different response categories. The data indicated that Ss responded to a …

Postcensal Population Estimates For Oregon Counties: An Evaluation Of Selected Methods, Guy Jeffrey Barnes Nov 1972

Postcensal Population Estimates For Oregon Counties: An Evaluation Of Selected Methods, Guy Jeffrey Barnes

Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluates the results of three widely used methods for preparing postcensa estimates of counties. The methods are Census Bureau’s Component Method II, the Ratio Correlation Method and the Bogue-Duncan Composite Method. Hypotheses based upon empirical generalizations from previous comparative studies are tested. Statistical tools used are Average Percent Deviation (without regard to sign) and Standard Deviation of Percent Errors. Directional bias and frequency of extreme error are also examined. Evaluations are conducted of the accuracy of the estimates for groups of counties stratified in terms of density and growth rate dimensions. With few exceptions, Ratio Correlation produces consistently …

Changes In Peer Conformity Across Age On Normative And Informational Tasks, Susan C. Wright Nov 1972

Changes In Peer Conformity Across Age On Normative And Informational Tasks, Susan C. Wright

Student Work

The influence of adult and peer models on Ss from grades 2, 5, 8, and 11 was measured on informational and normative tasks. Social influence was produced by presenting televised adult and peer model answers after each informational (dot discrepancy) and normative (art pictures) problem. The predictions that peer conformity would be positively related to age, and that peers would be more influential on normative tasks were not supported (p ˂ .05). While similar levels of peer conformity occurred for males and females on informational tasks, males conformed significantly more to peers on normative tasks than females. In addition, conformity …

The 1972 Cigarette Tax Referendum: A Mass Communication Campaign, Gwendolyn Moore Danielson Nov 1972

The 1972 Cigarette Tax Referendum: A Mass Communication Campaign, Gwendolyn Moore Danielson

Dissertations and Theses

During the past forty years, Oregon voters have approved only two tax proposals; both taxes on cigarettes. The subject of this study is the campaign carried out by proponents of H.B. 3064 to pass the most recent Oregon tax referendum measure. Central to the questions asked in the investigation of the 1972 cigarette tax campaign was why the outcome of this proposal was successful. The thesis hypothesizes that the critical variable was the involvement of major socio-economic interest groups in formulating and disseminating persuasive campaign messages.

The rationale for entering into such a study was the shortage of information on …

Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe Oct 1972

Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe

Dissertations and Theses

Northeast Brazil is a region characterized by economic poverty and human misery. Poor ecological conditions contribute to the nature of the dilemma, but another factor in the apparent cultural stagnation of the Northeast, may be the persistence of values and social practices traditionally aligned with the colonial sugar plantation system. Thus, this thesis represents an examination of the continuity of a given pattern, the man/patron relationship. This pattern is a contemporary parallel to the master/slave relationship which was the key to understanding of the social system of the colonial period. An historical overview reveals the nature of the traditional system, …

The Establishment And Evaluation Of A Channel Of Communication Between The Faculty Of The University Of New Mexico And The Governor Of The State Of New Mexico, Richard L. Dillender

Communication ETDs

Many explanations have been offered in an attempt to describe the true cause of campus unrest. Most of these reflect the needs of the examiner. It is safe to assert however that the tension and turmoil on our 'campuses evolve from several deficiencies. The subject of this thesis addresses itself to one of those weaknesses: A lack of communication between the Governor of the State of New Mexico and the faculty of the University of New Mexico.

A series of meetings was established to provide an opportunity for a group of faculty members (different each session) to discuss problems with …

Social Desirability And The Interpersonal Check List, Deborah Jean Wheeler Oct 1972

Social Desirability And The Interpersonal Check List, Deborah Jean Wheeler

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether number of responses is related to the social desirability and intensity of the test items. 61 Ss were administered the Interpersonal Check List and the Marlowe Crowne Social Desirability Scale. From the Interpersonal Check List number of responses, average item intensity and average item social desirability were calculated. Average item social desirability was calculated from individual item social desirability values obtained from ratings by another, similar S group. The results showed that number of responses is negatively correlated with average item social desirability and positively correlated with average item intensity, as …
