Review Of The Survey Of Institutional Digital Repositories, 2011 Edition By Primary Research Group, Paul Royster
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
This work reports the results of an online survey completed by respondants from 59 institutions, 24 of them being universities in the United States. This represents less than 3% of the 2099 open-access repositories listed in the Registry of Open Access Repositories; and less than 4.4% of the 1359 specifically identified as “Research Institutional or Departmental.” The institutions responding ranged from the Library of Congress and the British Library at one end of the spectrum to Pakistan Petroleum Limited, Keene State College, and Amgen, Inc. at the other. ... I would be sorry if any resource-challenged library invested in this …

Continuous technological advances in surveying, computing and digital-content delivery are strongly contributing to a change in the way Cultural Heritage is “perceived”: new tools and methodologies for documentation, reconstruction and research are being created to assist not only scholars, but also to reach more potential users (e.g. students and tourists) willing to access more detailed information about art history and archaeology. 3D computer-simulated models, sometimes set in virtual landscapes, offer for example the chance to explore possible hypothetical reconstructions, while on-line GIS resources can help interactive analyses of relationships and change over space and time. While for some research purposes …

This article examines social science relevant to public engagements and identifies the challenges to the goal of meaningful public input into science and technology policy. Specifically, when considering “which forms, features, and conditions of public engagement are optimal for what purposes, and why?” we find social science has not clarified matters. We offer a model to guide systematic research that defines and empirically connects variations in features and types of public engagement activities to specifically defined variations in effective processes and outcomes. The specification of models, as we have done, will guide policy makers, practitioners, and the public in determining …

Cash Leasing With Integrity, Bruce B. Johnson
Cash Leasing With Integrity, Bruce B. Johnson
Cornhusker Economics
The widow lady was calling from her retirement care facility. Her tenant of over 20 years wanted to finalize the cash rent agreement for 2011, and she was wondering, “What should I do?” With a lease rate that hadn’t seen an increase for several years, her per-acre rent payments in 2010 were not even half the average for the area. Even when her tenant said he could “raise it a few dollars per acre for this year,” the 2011 payments would fall even further behind the area average.
The out-of state land owner was following national media coverage of the …

Policy And Practice: An Analysis Of The Implementation Of Supported Employment In Nebraska, Heng-Hsian N. Liu
Policy And Practice: An Analysis Of The Implementation Of Supported Employment In Nebraska, Heng-Hsian N. Liu
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Supported employment (SE) is an evidence-based practice (EBP) for persons with severe mental illness (SMI) aimed at competitive employment. SE has a large evidence base, demonstrating outcomes across settings and populations. SE has been promoted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) and widely disseminated through the internet via a “community tool-kit” sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
The SE literature expresses the opinion that state governments can successfully implement SE. Researchers have developed implementation guidelines and identified stages of statewide implementation; however, most SE implementation …

Organs Watch: Possibilities And Perils For Public Anthropology, Roberto Abadie
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Recent technological advances in biomedicine have introduced new therapeutic possibilities but have also contributed to the emergence of a global market for human bodies and body parts. For example, artificial modes of human reproduction created a market for eggs, semen, and surrogate wombs. In addition, organ transfer generated a demand for kidneys and half livers. The whole body has become a valuable commodity as professional research subjects venture into the economy of Phase I Clinical Trials, testing drug safety for pharmaceutical companies. In the process, the trade has become a deeply unequal one in which poor, vulnerable, and easily exploited …

Adjusting Farm Custom Rates And Grain Storage Rental Rates For 2011, Doug Jose
Cornhusker Economics
Custom Rates - How much should custom rates be adjusted this year? That’s a question on the minds of a lot of operators as they prepare to go to the field. The economic structure of agriculture has changed dramatically in the past 12 months. Unfortunately, this is the off-year to conduct our biennial Nebraska Custom Rates Survey. The survey was last conducted a year ago, in the January to March time period of 2010.
Personal And Political Reconciliation In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Ari Kohen, Michael Zanchelli, Levi Drake
Personal And Political Reconciliation In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Ari Kohen, Michael Zanchelli, Levi Drake
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
The majority of scholarly research on Rwanda currently focuses on determining the causes of and participation in the genocide. In this paper, we explore a variety of questions that have come to the forefront in post-genocide Rwanda. In particular, we are concerned with the prospects for peace and justice in the aftermath of the gross abuses of human rights that occurred and, to that end, we consider the potential uses and limits of restorative justice initiatives in the process of healing and reconciliation in Rwanda. We argue that restorative justice initiatives have moved the country closer toward reconciliation than retributive …

Beef Cow Replacement Decisions: Is Keeping Open Cows Possible?, Trenton T. Bohling, Darrell R. Mark
Beef Cow Replacement Decisions: Is Keeping Open Cows Possible?, Trenton T. Bohling, Darrell R. Mark
Cornhusker Economics
In the past few years, some cow-calf producers have encountered abnormally large numbers of open, or unbred, cows in their herd. A couple of years ago, trichomoniasis, a venereal cattle disease spread by bulls, contributed to high percentages of open cows. This year, open cows are again showing up in herds, hypothesized to partially be the result of difficult winter conditions last winter and “washy” grass early last summer. In some cases, 40-70 percent of a cow herd has tested open, leaving producers to determine how best to replace these animals. Typically, options considered to replace these open cows are …

Nebraska Agricultural Land Markets Showing Strong Gains, Bruce B. Johnson, Roger K. Wilson, Sara Van Newkirk, Tyler Rosener
Cornhusker Economics
Riding the wave of high commodity prices and farm income levels, Nebraska’s agricultural land values rose 22 percent in the 12-month period ending February 1, 2011. According to preliminary results from the annual University of Nebraska-Lincoln Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments Survey, the state’s all-land average value is at a historic high of $1,833 per acre (Figure 1 on next page, and Table 1 on page 3). That level is double the state’s all-land average just six years previously in 2005.
While all classes of farmland posted large percentage gains, the cropland categories showed the strongest gains - a …
Academic Library Directors' Perceptions Of Joining A Large Library Consortium Sharing An Integrated Library System: A Descriptive Survey, Dennis Krieb
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The collective holdings of CARLI’s (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) “I-Share” catalog total approximately 32 million items. It is the third largest academic catalog in the United States, however only 76 of CARLI’s 148 academic libraries participate in I-Share. This descriptive survey examined the factors that influenced a CARLI academic library director’s decision to join, or not join, I-Share’s integrated library system. Seventy-seven of the 145 CARLI library directors sampled completed the web-based survey. This represented a 53.1% response rate.
The framework for the survey was designed around three sections; advantages, disadvantages, and obstacles to participating in …
Self-Esteem And Mastery Trajectories In High School By Social Class And Gender, Christina D. Falci
Self-Esteem And Mastery Trajectories In High School By Social Class And Gender, Christina D. Falci
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Using longitudinal data from 769 white adolescents in the Midwest, this research applies a social structure and personality perspective to examine variation in self-esteem and mastery trajectories by gender and SES across the high school years. Analyses reveal that high SES adolescents experience significantly steeper gains in self-esteem and mastery compared to low SES adolescents, resulting in the reversal of SES differences in self-esteem and the emergence of significant SES differences in mastery. Pre-existing gender differences in self-esteem narrow between the 9th and 12th grade because self-esteem increases at a faster rate among girls than boys during high …

Juror Perceptions Of Juveniles Transferred To Criminal Court: The Role Of Generic Prejudice And Emotion In Determinations Of Guilt, Megan Beringer Jones
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Research examining juror perceptions of juveniles tried as adults has provided mixed results, with some studies providing evidence of bias against juveniles tried as adults, and others finding no evidence of this bias. The present research aimed to clarify this issue by examining the roles of generic prejudice and emotion in jurors’ judgments of juveniles tried as adults. Study 1 assessed which stereotypes people associate with juveniles tried as adults compared to juveniles tried in juvenile court and adults tried in criminal court. Study 2 examined to what extent angry, fearful, sad, and neutral mock jurors used these stereotypes to …

Connecting Print And Electronic Titles: An Integrated Approach At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Judith A. Wolfe, Joan Latta Konecky, Dana W. R. Boden
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Libraries make heavy investments in electronic resources, with many of these resources reflecting title changes, bundled subsets, or content changes of formerly print material. These changes can distance the electronic format from its print origins, creating discovery and access issues. A task force was formed to explore the enhancement of catalog records to increase the connections between print and electronic titles, thus improving patron discovery and access to electronic resources. The investigation considered the relationships between parent and dependent titles, title changes, and publication subsets. The resulting recommendations included interdepartmental cooperation, record-display best practices, and methods for tracking catalog-record enhancements.
