Sex Differences In Spatial Abilities: Methodological Problems In Hoffman Et Al., Drew A.H. Bailey, Richard A. Lippa, Marco Del Giudice, Raymond Hames, Dave C. Geary Mar 2012

Sex Differences In Spatial Abilities: Methodological Problems In Hoffman Et Al., Drew A.H. Bailey, Richard A. Lippa, Marco Del Giudice, Raymond Hames, Dave C. Geary

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Hoffman et al. (1) claimed to provide evidence that “nurture” (i.e., residing in a patrilineal vs. matrilineal tribe in India) critically affects sex differences in spatial abilities. Unfortunately, their conclusion is undermined by major problems with their measures of spatial ability and sex equality.

The first and biggest problem is with their measure of spatial abilities. “Spatial abilities” are a complex cognitive domain, with facets ranging from location memory (favoring women) to navigation in 3D virtual space (favoring men) (2). The puzzle used by Hoffman et al. (1) is similar to the Object Assembly subtest of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence …

The Historical, Jurisprudential, And Empirical Wisdom Of Parental Responsibility Laws, Eve M. Brank, Leroy Scott Mar 2012

The Historical, Jurisprudential, And Empirical Wisdom Of Parental Responsibility Laws, Eve M. Brank, Leroy Scott

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The parent-child relationship is woven deep within historical and contemporary culture, but strong retributive ideals have led to blaming parents because of their presumed vicarious role in juvenile crime. The current article will discuss the history, forms, legal challenges, and empirical research related to parental involvement laws in the United States. The parent-child relationship provides the historical framework behind the separate juvenile justice parens patriae system; however, with the juvenile justice system not as successful as originally imagined, blame has shifted to the parents. We examine the potential constitutional implications of enacting and enforcing parental involvement statutes and ordinances and …

Ice Raids, Children, Media And Making Sense Of Latino Newcomers In Flyover Country., Edmund T. Hamann, Jenelle Reeves Mar 2012

Ice Raids, Children, Media And Making Sense Of Latino Newcomers In Flyover Country., Edmund T. Hamann, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Extant cultural models articulated in “Flyover Country” print media responses to ICE workplace raids showed a welcome of sorts of Latino newcomers. These models suggest a place for Latino students at school and more broadly for Latino children and parents in these communities. Thus, they index an unwillingness to see Latino newcomers in dehumanizing reductive terms, like “alien” or “illegal,” even as these more debilitating models may also be extant elsewhere in the public sphere.

The Increasing Use Of Unallocated Retained Earnings By Farmer Cooperatives, Jeffrey S. Royer Mar 2012

The Increasing Use Of Unallocated Retained Earnings By Farmer Cooperatives, Jeffrey S. Royer

Cornhusker Economics

In the past, the primary source of equity capital in U.S. farmer cooperatives has been retained patronage refunds. Typically, a cooperative would allocate its net earnings to individual members on the basis of patronage and retain a share of those allocations to provide equity until eventually redeeming it in cash. Over time, however, unallocated retained earnings have become an increasingly important source of equity. In fact, in 2008, cooperatives kept a greater proportion of their net earnings as unallocated retained earnings than as retained patronage refunds, according to the most recent U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) financial profile of farmer …

West Of Eden: Resource Wars And Nature-Cultures In The American West, Scout Calvert Mar 2012

West Of Eden: Resource Wars And Nature-Cultures In The American West, Scout Calvert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The richness and variety of the western landscape is what is at stake in hot political contests for the resources of the West: much of this public land is available to economic activity, including for mining, grazing, logging, and recreation. These uses threaten to outpace the land’s ability to renew these resources along with others, like air and water. Now in the first decade of the millennium with a new environmental awareness emerging partly from media coverage of global warming and peak oil, The American West at Risk offers a wide-ranging look at the degradation of the environment in the …

Don’T Forget The Supply Side Of Agricultural Land Markets, Bruce B. Johnson Mar 2012

Don’T Forget The Supply Side Of Agricultural Land Markets, Bruce B. Johnson

Cornhusker Economics

In today's bullish agricultural land markets across the nation's heartland, it is easy to attribute the climb in values to strong demand on the part of buyers wanting to invest in land to capture good returns of recent years. While true, that may be only half the story underlying the land market dynamics. Just as "it takes two to tango," it takes the supply side of the market as well as demand to create the land market dance.

We have been following the market for many years, observing the amount of land being offered for sale in …

Nebraska Farmland Values Soar, Bruce B. Johnson Mar 2012

Nebraska Farmland Values Soar, Bruce B. Johnson

Cornhusker Economics

The 2012 UNL Nebraska Farm Real Estate Survey confirms what most people close to agriculture already knew – agricultural land values across the state have shot upward in recent months. Preliminary survey results show the state’s all-land average value as of February 1, 2012 to be at $2,410 per acre, 31 percent above the year-earlier level (Figure 1 and Table 1, on following pages). The annual gain, in both dollar amount and percentage, is the largest ever recorded in the 34-year history of the UNL land market survey series.

Cropland, particularly, showed pronounced value gains in every region of the …

The Economics Of Bunk Feeding Distillers Grains To Feeder Steers On Pasture, Matthew C. Stockton, Leslie Aaron Stalker Mar 2012

The Economics Of Bunk Feeding Distillers Grains To Feeder Steers On Pasture, Matthew C. Stockton, Leslie Aaron Stalker

Cornhusker Economics

Growth of the ethanol industry in Nebraska and surrounding states has increased the availability of distillers co-products as feed for livestock. The increased availability of distillers grains with solubles (DGS) together with its high protein, energy and phosphorous content, make it a natural fit as a supplement in many grazing situations (2008 Nebraska Beef Report, pg. 25-27, 2009 Nebraska Beef Report, pg. 37-39). DGS generally comes in the form of a wet (WDGS) or dry (DDGS) product. How to feed this relatively new product to cattle in a pasture is an important economic question. Several recent studies …

Insights From Editions Of The Annual Register Regarding Later Variants Of The Royal Proclamation Of 1763: An Application Of Levenshtein’S Edit Distance Metric - Website Announcement & Link, Charles D. Bernholz, Brian T. O'Grady Feb 2012

Insights From Editions Of The Annual Register Regarding Later Variants Of The Royal Proclamation Of 1763: An Application Of Levenshtein’S Edit Distance Metric - Website Announcement & Link, Charles D. Bernholz, Brian T. O'Grady

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Variants of King George III’s Royal Proclamation of 1763, found in ten editions of the sixth volume of The Annual Register for that year, were examined through the application of Levenshtein’s edit distance metric to identify textual discrepancies across these renditions. Induced textual errors were carried into later editions of the 1763 Annual Register. The presence of distinct faults in Proclamation texts taken from other independent publications indicated that the latter must have used deviant Register versions as their sources.

Table I and Table II (Excel spreadsheets) are attached (below).

How Do You Define Success?, Connie I. Reimers-Hild Feb 2012

How Do You Define Success?, Connie I. Reimers-Hild

Kimmel Education and Research Center: Presentations and White Papers

What exactly is success? Many of the books, blogs and other for-profit resources available on success would have us believe that success is making it big in terms of money, power and fame. If you happen to have an executive title or big paycheck, you must be successful, right? This type of success is largely associated with external motivation and gratification.

What is the cost of getting “to the top” or “making it big?” Sometimes, we forget to consider the tradeoffs associated with perceived success, or we only hear about the positive elements of money, fame and status. Rarely do …

External Validity Reporting In Behavioral Treatment Of Childhood Obesity, Lisa M. Klesges, Natalie A. Williams, Kara S. Davis, Joanna Buscemi, Katherine M. Kitzmann

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Context—To aid translation of childhood obesity research interventions evidence into practice, research studies must report results in a way that better supports pragmatic decision making. The current review evaluated the extent to which information on key external validity dimensions, participants, settings, interventions, outcomes, and maintenance of effects, was included in research studies on behavioral treatments for childhood obesity.

Evidence acquisition—Peer-reviewed studies of behavioral childhood obesity treatments published between 1980 and 2008 were identified from: (1) electronic searches of social science and medical databases, (2) research reviews of childhood obesity interventions, and (3) reference lists cited in these reviews. …

Bark Beetles And Fire: Two Forces Of Nature Transforming Western Forests, Gail Wells Feb 2012

Bark Beetles And Fire: Two Forces Of Nature Transforming Western Forests, Gail Wells

Joint Fire Science Program Digests

Bark beetles are chewing a wide swath through forests across North America. Over the past few years, infestations have become epidemic in lodgepole and spruce-fir forests of the Intermountain West. The resulting extensive acreages of dead trees are alarming the public and raising concern about risk of severe fire. Researchers supported by the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) are examining the complicated relationship between bark beetles and wildfire, the two most influential natural disturbance agents in these forests. Are the beetles setting the stage for larger, more severe wildfires? And are fires bringing on beetle epidemics? Contrary to popular opinion, …

Nebraska Leads The Way To Help Beginning Farmers And Ranchers, David J. Goeller Feb 2012

Nebraska Leads The Way To Help Beginning Farmers And Ranchers, David J. Goeller

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska continues to lead the nation with efforts to provide an incentive for owners of agricultural assets to rent those agricultural assets to beginning farmers and ranchers. The Nebraska Beginning Farmers Tax Credit program provides owners of Nebraska agricultural assets such as land, livestock, machinery, grain storage, livestock facilities or irrigation equipment a state income tax credit incentive to rent to a beginning farmer/rancher, rather than someone that is more established. Owners of Nebraska agricultural assets can earn a ten percent state income tax credit for providing a beginner a three-year cash lease, or a fifteen percent state income tax …

Signifying The Place Of Unforgettable Memory: Atrocity And Trauma In A Post-Conflict Landscape, Ralph J. Hartley Feb 2012

Signifying The Place Of Unforgettable Memory: Atrocity And Trauma In A Post-Conflict Landscape, Ralph J. Hartley

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

After active inter-group lethal violence subsides places at which atrocities occurred are often assigned significance, reflecting an altered social topography influenced by ideology that may foster the hardening of socio-ethnic boundary distinctions. While using a comparativist approach, this paper explores the relationships between socio-cultural trauma, places of atrocity, and socio-political polarization. Two sites in the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda, where highly publicized massacres occurred, illustrate the power of place significance in social environments vulnerable to flare-ups of violent conflict.

Scotts Bluff National Monument, Plant Community Resource Brief, Isabel Ashton, Mike Prowatzke Feb 2012

Scotts Bluff National Monument, Plant Community Resource Brief, Isabel Ashton, Mike Prowatzke

United States National Park Service: Publications

2011 Monitoring Status

Overview

In 2011, the first year of vegetation monitoring by the Northern Great Plains Network Inventory and Monitoring staff at Scotts Bluff National Monument, efforts resulted in the documentation of 79 plant species. This was the lowest number of species among parks sampled in 2011. Graminoid (grass and grass-like plant) species accounted for only 21 (27%) of the total species, but graminoid cover was much higher than that of any other plant type. Forbs were much more diverse, but did not provide as much foliar cover.

The 5 most abundant native non-graminoids were winterfat (Krascheninnikovia lanata …

Introduction

The Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (NGPN) includes thirteen park units located in five northern Great Plains states across six ecoregions. Plant community composition and structure monitoring comprises the core of the vegetation monitoring effort for the NGPN, covering the “Riparian Lowland Plant Communities” and “Upland Plant Communities” vital signs (Gitzen et al. 2010). The narrative portion of the plant community protocol can be found in Symstad et al. 2012. The narrative includes the rationale for vegetation monitoring, an overview of sample design, field methods, data management, and program requirements. Human Rights And U.S. Foreign Policy In The Multilateral Development Banks, Daniel Braaten Feb 2012

Human Rights And U.S. Foreign Policy In The Multilateral Development Banks, Daniel Braaten

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Promoting human rights is an important foreign policy goal for the United States. There are many foreign policy areas through which the U.S. promotes human rights including voting against countries which violate human rights in the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). Promoting human rights, however, is not the only foreign policy goal of the U.S. in the MDBs. The U.S. also seeks strategic goals such as supporting allies and promoting domestic economic prosperity as well in the MDBs. Realist international relations theory posits that strategic interests will trump promoting human rights in the MDBs. For the U.S. however liberal international relations …

From Farm Income Support To Risk Management, Bradley D. Lubben Feb 2012

From Farm Income Support To Risk Management, Bradley D. Lubben

Cornhusker Economics

The debate over the next farm bill fired up in late 2011 when it looked like a closed-door-negotiated agreement could become part of a grand budget-cutting plan put together by the so-called “Super Committee.” But then, the Super Committee failed to reach an agreement on how to cut the federal budget deficit and the whole farm bill package failed to advance as well.

Now, the work has restarted on the farm bill in 2012, with even greater challenges. Questions remain about how big the spending cuts will be, what direction the farm programs will go, and even what the political …

Nebraska Restrictions On Foreign Land Ownership, J. David Aiken Feb 2012

Nebraska Restrictions On Foreign Land Ownership, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska is one of eight states that restrict the ownership of agricultural land by aliens (i.e., noncitizens). The other states are Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Foreign land ownership is generally unrestricted in the remaining states. Federal law does not restrict alien land ownership, but does require alien land owners to report ownership to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This newsletter will (1) examine the extent of foreign land ownership within the United States and Nebraska, and (2) summarize Nebraska’s laws restricting alien land ownership.

Water Management Funding Issues, J. David Aiken Feb 2012

Water Management Funding Issues, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

In 2007, the Nebraska Unicameral authorized Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) located in the Republican River Basin to impose two new taxes to pay for water management activities associated with Republican River Compact compliance. The taxes were intended to pay for NRD bonds to finance needed Republican River water management activities. One tax was a general property tax levy of up to ten cents, and the second an occupation tax of up to $10/acre, levied only against irrigated land. This article reviews the lawsuits associated with these two NRD water management taxes.

Consumer Attitudes And Labeling Regimes As Determinants Of The Market Success Of Food Nanotechnology, Amalia Yiannaka Feb 2012

Consumer Attitudes And Labeling Regimes As Determinants Of The Market Success Of Food Nanotechnology, Amalia Yiannaka

Cornhusker Economics

In a recent poll conducted by the Institute of Food Technologists, when consumers were asked about their knowledge of nanotechnology and its applications to the food sector, two-thirds said they had heard ‘nothing at all’ about the technology (Food Safety News 2010). European polls tell a similar story; a 2010 Eurobarometer survey showed that, while public awareness of nanotechnology is gradually emerging, more than half of the respondents knew nothing about the technology, and could not tell whether it would have a positive or a negative impact on their lives (European Commission 2010).

According to the National Nanotechnology Initiative, nanotechnology …

Smarter Intentions & Authentic Goals, Connie I. Reimers-Hild

Kimmel Education and Research Center: Faculty and Staff Publications

Intentions influence our actions and behaviors. If intentions are established with awareness, truth, and meaning, they can help us experience a life filled with passion and personal fulfillment. Lack of understanding around our true intentions often causes frustration and confusion, which is one reason people oftentimes do not achieve their goals. Many goals are written; however, they are not established with honest intent. It’s time to get brutally honest about your true intentions so you can achieve authentic goals.

Intentions have the power to strengthen your Inner Leader and move forward in a meaningful way as long as they represent …
