Fostering A Culture Of Openness, Sue Ann Gardner Apr 2017

Fostering A Culture Of Openness, Sue Ann Gardner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

Fostering a culture of open scholarship on campus involves meeting scholars where they are both physically and academically. Both established and emerging scholars need to communicate with their peers, each other, and the public. Librarians and library staff can reach out to scholars in numerous ways, by creating online tools and meeting with people in person one-on-one, in small groups, in classrooms, or in large meetings. If policies and best practices do not serve scholars well, librarians need to consider revising them to align with scholars' workflows and desired outcomes.

Unknown Identities: How Transracial International Adoptees Racially And Culturally Identify In College, Amy Williamson

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This qualitative research study investigated transracial international adoptees (TRIAs) and how they racially and culturally identify in college. This study was meant to bring an awareness to student affairs professionals to increase their knowledge about a population they may encounter. Four TRIAs were interviewed. The findings from the data analysis revealed many TRIAs were uninterested in their birth country growing up, they were connected to their adoptive culture, and they racially identified with their birth race. Areas for future research and recommendations for student affairs are included.

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: April 21, 2017, Eric Thompson Apr 2017

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: April 21, 2017, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 rose by 1.00% during March of 2017. This increase followed rapid increases in both January and February. Taken together, the three increases suggest that economic growth will be strong in Nebraska during the second half of 2017. Among the components of the indicator, business expectations were strong during March. The value of the U.S. dollar also fell during March, which is a positive sign for Nebraska’s export-oriented businesses, particularly in agriculture and manufacturing. In addition, manufacturing hours increased during March.

The Demographic Profile For Female Textile-Design Bloggers, Khadijah Baaqil

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A review of existing literature demonstrates the need for additional research on female home-based business owners. This study aimed to partially fill the literature gap by exploring the demographic profile of female home-based textile-design bloggers, a unique segment of the female home-based business world.

The findings of the qualitative content analysis of the 30 designers’ blogs and 138 blog posts included the findings of their age, nationality and ethnic identity, current place of residence, family status, educational background, occupation, and socioeconomic status. These findings were then reduced into numbers and percentages. Findings of the analysis show that designers vary from …

Developing Criteria To Establish Trusted Digital Repositories, John Faundeen

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

This paper details the drivers, methods, and outcomes of the U.S. Geological Survey’s quest to establish criteria by which to judge its own digital preservation resources as Trusted Digital Repositories. Drivers included recent U.S. legislation focused on data and asset management conducted by federal agencies spending $100M USD or more annually on research activities. The methods entailed seeking existing evaluation criteria from national and international organizations such as International Standards Organization (ISO), U.S. Library of Congress, and Data Seal of Approval upon which to model USGS repository evaluations. Certification, complexity, cost, and usability of existing evaluation models were key considerations. …

This study examined a knowledge-centered theory of institutional trust development. In the context of trust in water regulatory institutions, the moderating impact of knowledge was tested to determine if there were longitudinal changes in the bases of institutional trust as a function of increases in knowledge about a target institution. We hypothesized that as people learn about an institution with which they were previously unfamiliar, they begin to form more nuanced perceptions, distinguishing the new institution from other institutions and relying less upon their generalized trust to estimate their trust in that institution. Prior to having specific, differential information about …

Who R U? Identity Theft And Unl Students, Marcia L. Dority Baker, Cheryl O'Dell

Information Technology Services: Publications

How can academic institutions help educate their students about the risks of identity theft? Or teach students to better understand how one’s online presence can hold so much joy and angst? For one campus, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, the opportunity came from a middle school teacher engaging his students in a future problem-solving activity. UNL had the opportunity to create a 45-minute presentation on identity theft for local public school students who would be spending the day on campus researching this topic.

While preparing the presentation, we realized a top 10 list on identity theft for UNL students would be …

Wikiproject (Fill In The Blank) : Be A Wikipedian!, Dana W. R. Boden

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

Wikipedia is 16 years old this year. It is ranked the 5th most visited site on the World Wide Web. Many librarians and information specialists have a love hate relationship with this open access, free internet encyclopedia. Searching for information sometimes exposes: a lack of information, or even, existence of entries on specific topics; inaccurate information; or results in the frustration of a research dead end due to articles lacking references. Wikipedia is, of course, a collaboratively edited resource. A Wikipedia WikiProject is a group of contributors working together to improve the Wikipedia information and the pages on a particular …

The Russian Food And Agricultural Import Ban, Marianna Khachaturyan, E. Wesley F. Peterson Apr 2017

The Russian Food And Agricultural Import Ban, Marianna Khachaturyan, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Cornhusker Economics

In 2014 the United States, European Union (EU), and several other countries imposed economic sanctions on Russia in response to its annexation of Crimea and support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine (Nelson, 2017; Europa, 2017). Prior to the 1990s, the use of economic sanctions to challenge the behavior of foreign governments was fairly rare as the target country could easily turn to the cold-war adversary of the sanctioning country to avoid their effects. With the end of the Cold War, sanctions, usually comprehensive in nature restricting economic relations across the board, became a major foreign policy tool. Because comprehensive …

Generational Change In Parenting Styles Among Vietnamese In Nebraska, Paulina Nguyen

UCARE: Research Products

This study is part of a larger research project that examines the experiences and beliefs of parents from five Asian population in Nebraska, namely, Filipino, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Indian. There is a need for research on Vietnamese American families, more so because of its increasing population in the state. The goal of the study is to describe the ways in which Vietnamese American parents differ across generations in terms of their child-rearing practices. Parents are either authoritarian or authoritative. Nguyen and Cheung (2009) stated that research specifically on Vietnamese parents is limited. Thus, past literature has generalized all Asian …

Parental Blame Frame: An Empirical Examination Of The Media's Portrayal Of Parents And Their Delinquent Juveniles, Ashley Wellman, Eve Brank, Katherine Hazen

Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications

The most recent study discussed in this article examines how the media report issues of parental responsibility and blame regarding acts of juvenile delinquency. To accomplish this goal, we examined the frequency, context, and framing of parental responsibility in local and national print media via two content analyses. The results demonstrate that national media sources depict the notion of parental responsibility, whereas local media stories rarely mention parents. The national stories offer distant, more global statements of parental responsibility, while the local, specific stories tend to avoid any parental blame. The findings in this paper mirror public opinion polls that …

Investigating Preferences For Patriarchal Values Among Muslim University Students In Southern Thailand, Mahsoom Sateemae, Tarik Abdel-Monem, Suhaimee Sateemae

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Recent research on Muslim populations has offered interesting but limited insights about values preferences. This mixed-methods study examines the prevalence of support for patriarchy among a sample of religious Muslim university students in Southern Thailand using items from the World Values Survey. It also investigates the durability of these preferences by examining correlations between support or opposition to patriarchal values with preferences towards courtship practices, and elements that influence respondents’ views on gender roles, particularly related to the contemporary socioeconomic and political situation facing the Muslim minority of Southern Thailand.

The Efficacy Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation In The Home Setting: Outcomes And Mechanisms In Rural Communities, Susan M. Sheridan, Amanda Witte, Shannon R. Holmes, Chaorong Wu

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

This study reports the results of a randomized controlled trial examining the effect of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC), a family-school partnership intervention, on children’s behaviors, parents’ skills, and parent-teacher relationships in rural community and town settings. Participants were 267 children, 267 parents, and 152 teachers in 45 Midwestern schools. Using an Intent to Treat approach and data analyzed within a multilevel modeling framework, CBC yielded promising results for some but not all outcomes. Specifically, children participating in CBC experienced decreases in daily reports of aggressiveness, noncompliance, and temper tantrums; and increases in parent-reported adaptive skills and social skills at a …

Early Head Start Home Visitor's Identification Of Risk For Maltreatment, Alayna Schreier Apr 2017

Early Head Start Home Visitor's Identification Of Risk For Maltreatment, Alayna Schreier

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Infants and toddlers enrolled in Early Head Start are at increased risk for child maltreatment due to the presence of numerous factors across a developmental-ecological framework, such as poverty, parental mental health problems, and developmental disability (e.g., Belsky, 1993; Bronfenbrenner, 1979). Within Early Head Start, home visitors are in a unique position to identify the families most likely to experience maltreatment. However, research has demonstrated that home visitors are often ill-equipped to identify and address risk factors such as parental mental health concerns, substance abuse, and domestic violence (Azzi-Lessing, 2011; Tandon, Mercer, Saylor, & Duggan, 2008). Further, little is known …

Just Here For Moral Support: A Path Analysis Of Depression And Social Support Networks, Jordan E. Marshall

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Social support has been shown to be associated with lower depression scores in a variety of populations. Using a series of questionnaires, Leahy-Warren, McCarthy, and Corcoran (2011) found significant negative relationships between functional social support and postnatal depression as well as between informal social support and postnatal depression. Grav et. al, (2011) conducted a similar study on the general population, and found that perceived support was significantly correlated to depression. Research suggests that there are gender differences in the relationship between social support and depression. Utilizing data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam, Sonnenberg et. al, (2013) found a lack …

Investigating Layers Of Identity And Identity Gaps In Refugee Resettlement Experiences In The Midwestern United States, Gretchen Bergquist, Jordan Soliz, Kristen Everhart, Lee Kreimer, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Post-migration, refugees experience changes within personal and community relationships that have dramatic effects on their sense of self and, in turn, well-being.

§ During resettlement, refugees are forced to reconceptualize identity as they encounter and integrate into a new host country and culture.

§ Tensions emerge when integrating one’s self-concept into a web of new personal and social networks while simultaneously managing and adapting to larger social norms and public attitudes in the host country.

§ The epicenter of tensions and experiences that create turbulence in the lives of refugees is the negotiation and reconceptualization of identity within relationships and …

Tiers 1, 2 & 3 Intervention: Postsecondary Transition Planning, Shir Palmon, Natalie Hoff, Allison Heifner, Reece L. Peterson Apr 2017

Tiers 1, 2 & 3 Intervention: Postsecondary Transition Planning, Shir Palmon, Natalie Hoff, Allison Heifner, Reece L. Peterson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Conclusion

Postsecondary transition planning is how schools assist students in preparing for postsecondary education or employment after high school. This vital educational component is required in IEPs for any student with disabilities, aged 16 and older. However, transition planning is also helpful for other students who are at-risk for dropping out or are uncertain about what they want to do after high school. There are several useful evidence-based transition practices, including the completion of vocational education coursework, involving students in their IEPs and or transition planning process, and changing program structures to those that have proven to be effective in …

Scholastic Journalism Adviser's Guide, Mark Hilburn Apr 2017

Scholastic Journalism Adviser's Guide, Mark Hilburn

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Professional Projects

With a passion for scholastic (high school) journalism, I want my professional project to tailor to that. I hold multiple degrees and certifications in journalism, which have no doubt helped me in the classroom, but not all high school journalism teachers do. Instead, many are taking teaching positions and are told at the time of their interview, or later, that journalism classes (mainly yearbook and newspaper) are part of their teaching schedule. Wanting a job in such a competitive market, these teachers are agreeing and then left scrambling to teach themselves the curriculum before they can teach it to students. …

Assessing Preschool Professionals’ Learning Experiences In Ohio: What Have We Learned?, Shayne B. Piasta, Susie Mauck, Rachel E. Schachter, Caitlin F. Spear, Kristin S. Farley, Melissa M. Weber-Mayrer, Laura M. Justice, Ann A. O’Connell

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

In the Assessing Preschool Professionals’ Learning Experiences (APPLE) project, we partnered with ecQ-net and the Ohio Department of Education to conduct an independent evaluation of Ohio’s statesponsored language and literacy professional development for early childhood educators. Participating educators were randomly assigned to experience the state’s 30-hour language and literacy professional development course, the course plus ongoing in-class coaching, or professional development on an alternative topic. Largely, the language and literacy professional development did not improve educators’ knowledge, dispositions, or classroom practices, nor did it improve children’s language and literacy outcomes. This may have been due to variability in implementation. Although …

Repository managers can never be one hundred percent sure of the security of hosted research data. Even assuming that human errors and technical faults will never happen, repositories can be subject to hacking attacks. Therefore, repositories accepting personal/sensitive data (or other forms of restricted data) should have workflows in place with defined procedures to be followed should things go wrong and restricted data is inappropriately released. In this paper we will report on our considerations and procedures when restricted data from our institution was inappropriately released.

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: March 17, 2017, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 rose by 2.08% during February of 2017. The indicator also rose rapidly in January. The two increases indicate that economic growth will be strong in Nebraska during the second half of 2017. Among the components of the indicator, business expectations were very strong during February. Further, initial claims for unemployment insurance declined during the month, a sign of a strengthening labor market. The value of the U.S. dollar also fell during February, which is a positive sign for Nebraska’s export-oriented businesses.
