In the fifty years after the Civil War, black leaders founded some sixty predominantly black communities in the United States. Most were located in the rural South or on the central Great Plains. Most failed within a short time, leaving behind shattered dreams and few, if any, remains. Norman L. Crockett examines five of these communities in his new book, The Black Towns: Nicodemus in Kansas, Mound Bayou in Mississippi, and Langston, Clearview, and Boley in Oklahoma.

The exploration and settlement of the American West have long been subjects of interest to American historians and their readers, but until recently the frontier was viewed as a predominantly male experience. Frederick Jackson Turner's frontiers were explored, conquered, and settled by men, and Turner's successors kept to the male theme. Not only does article quality usually vary, but often the issues addressed are so disparate that an editor can write of an encompassing theme only by using the vaguest of terms. Using these points as criteria, The American West is a better-than-average collection. After much too long a wait, we have now a second volume of Charles M. Russell's inimitable "paper talk" -as he called his illustrated letters, verses, Christmas greetings, and similar personalia. The first was assembled by Frederic Renner in 1962 for the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, Fort Worth, and has long been out of print.

Mallard (Arias platyrhynchos) populations breeding in temperate North America obtain a significant part of the energy and lipid requirements of reproduction at sites occupied prior to arrival on the breeding grounds. Protein for egg formation, however, is obtained principally from the diet during the nesting period. Both sexes arrive heavy and fat in North Dakota but experience substantial weight loss and lipid depletion during the nesting cycle. Weight loss is most pronounced among females and averages 25% from prelaying to late incubation. Body weights of both sexes are positively correlated with carcass lipid content. SCHUBERT gesammelten 464 Moosproben aus den zentralen und westlichen Landschaften der MVR erbracht werden, Von R. SCHUBERT, W. Die Entwicklung der Hydrobiologie in der MVR vollzog sich unter ständiger Orientierung an den volkswirtschaftlichen Interessen des Landes. Deshalb wurde neben grundlegenden Forschungen zu Fauna und Ökologie der Gewässer besonderes Gewicht auf die Akklimutisierung von Nutzfischen gelegt. Die dazu notwendigen Kenntnisse der hydrobiologisch bisher weitgehend unerforschten Seen der Mongolei erbrachten mehrjährige Expeditionen in verschiedenen Gebieten des Landes. Den gemeinsamen Biologischen Chövsgöl-Expeditionen der Universitäten Irkutsk und Ulan-Balor kommt dabei eine besondere Rolle zu. Seit mehr als 20 Jahren führen Biologen der Staatlichen Mongolischen Universität Ulan-Bator und von Akademie-Instituten der Mongolischen Volksrepublik gemeinsam mit Zoologen und Botanikern befreundeter wissenschaftlicher Partnereinrichtungen insbesondere der DDR, der UdSSR, der CSSR sowie der Volksrepublik Ungarn in großem Umfang Expeditionen zur Erforschung der biologischen Ressourcen der MVR durch. Im Rahmen dieser Expeditionen wurde unter anderem ein umfangreiches Arthropodenmaterial gesammelt, dessen Bearbeitung einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Erschließung der mongolischen Entomofauna darstellt.
