Encompassing level prairies, gently sloping hills, and the high mountains of the eastern slope of the Rockies, it provides outstanding scenery as well as productive farming and extensive mineral production. Its variable climate provides short, hot summers and long, cold winters. A relatively high level of rainfall (and snowfall) provides an abundance of running and standing water habitats, including four major rivers (Milk, Saskatchewan, Athabasca, and Peace), two large lakes (Athabasca and Lesser Slave), and many smaller lakes and prairie potholes. In 1883 the U.S. General Land Office conducted the sale of the eastern remnant of the Big Blue reservation in Nebraska and Kansas for the benefit of its owners, the Otoe-Missouria Indians. The property sold for an average of $12.22 an acre. It was the highest per-acre price ever offered for Indian lands on the Central and Northern Great Plains. Before the first year of white settlement had come to an end, however, many landholders began to petition federal authorities for payment-time extensions and, eventually, debt reductions. They argued that they had been "forced" to pay more for their lands …

This study explores the role of groundwater exploitation on population change in the High Plains Ogallala region. Results from several multiple regression analyses are examined to assess the relationship between 1980-1990 population changes in 184 counties with the dominance of irrigated agriculture, change in irrigated acreage, historical population change, farm size change, population density, urbanization, and the level of agricultural employment.

Change in irrigated acreage is significantly associated with population change for Nebraska and for the 90 counties that have an urban place. However, the more important factors are the degree of urbanization among the urban counties and long term …

There are few "Bats of” books for states because usually there are not that many species located in a particular state and second, we often do not have much information about the bats in a particular place or state. But there has been increasing interest in bats in the last few years stimulated by organizations like Bat Conservation International and publications like Bats of Carlsbad Caverns, both of which have high quality photographs of bats. The Carlsbad publication has particularly spectacular pictures of bats in flight.

Temporal And Spatial Dietary Variability In The Prehistoric Lower And Middle Osmore Drainage: The Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Evidence, Karin L. Sandness

Skeletal material from six sites representing human occupation in the Osmore drainage of southern Peru, circa A.D. 50 to 1400, was analyzed for carbon and nitrogen isotopes. The δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values observed in the study indicate-spatial and temporal variability in diet. Specimens from the lower valley are, in general, more positive in both carbon and nitrogen than those of the middle valley, with the most positive values being present in specimens from the coastal Chiribaya site, San Geronimo. The data suggest, however, that all populations in the drainage experienced shifts in diet through time. Samples …

The purpose of this study was to identify and rank effective teaching competencies by secondary vocational teachers, general secondary teachers, teacher educators, and State Department of Education supervisors, and to determine if there was a difference in teaching effectiveness between secondary vocational and general secondary teachers as measured in the classroom, utilizing the COKER (Classroom Observations Keyed for Effectiveness Research). An instrument was constructed from a variety of sources, primarily from the University of Toledo competency indicators as noted by Medley, Coker, and Soar (1984). Nebraska's agricultural land values moved slightly upward during 1991 as the market operated in a mode of relative stability. The 15th annual UNL farm real estate market survey recorded an overall state average increase of 3.7 percent for the 12-month period ending February 1, 1992. This rate of change matched the u.s. rate of inflation during 1991, so in real (purchasing power) terms, there was essentially no change in average value.

Social phobia and avoidant personality disorder (APD) may be given as comorbid diagnoses. However, it is not known if the labels provide independent, useful diagnostic information. We classified social phobics by social phobia subtype and presence of APD. Generalized social phobics with and without APD (ns = 10 and 10) and nongeneralized social phobics without APD (n = 10) were distinguished on measures of phobic severity. The generalized groups also showed earlier age at onset and higher scores on measures of depression, fear of negative evaluation, and social anxiety and avoidance than did the nongeneralized group. Variability between readers in the evaluation of the radiographic appearances of pneumoconiosis has been investigated by several authors. To reduce inter and intrareader variability, standard reference films were introduced for epidemiological purposes. Improved films and methods of classification were published in subsequent years. The category of profusion of small opacities is determined by considering the profusion as a whole over the affected zones of the lung, and by comparing this with the standard radiographs. This requires a mental process of integrating profusion over the affected zones.

Clearly, the doctrine of prior appropriation played an integral part in Justice Willis Van Devanter's decision in Wyoming v. Colorado (1922). Not so clear was the pervasive influence of equity in the justice's opinion. In many ways, Van Devanter's thinking is in keeping with the historical unfolding of the United States Supreme Court's use of equity to resolve interstate water conflicts.

The future economic and environmental changes in the communities of the Black Hills were examined through the use of the Delphi technique. The study utilized a panel of 80 experts on the wide range of land-use issues and conflicts in the Black Hills. The panel identified 14 future land-use conflict issues: mining, grazing, timbering, outdoor recreation, wilderness areas, tourism, legalized gambling, second home development, Native American claims, fire management, water management, landfills, traffic management, and the US Forest Service's policies of land-use management. The panel predicted when certain events concerning those 14 issues would occur. Their predictions were then related …

Like other books that are the off-spring of conferences and symposia, the weaknesses of the symposium are replicated in the book unless the editors apply a heavy hand to ensure interrelatedness and quality of contributions. Unfortunately, evidence of this editorial hand is missing: the book is uneven and fails to demonstrate the interconnections between chapters. The legal profession is highly differentiated by practice situation, clientele, and community setting, producing multiple professions within the practice of law. Using community size as the independent variable, this paper argues that the structuring of a legal career has less to do with the commonalities of legal training or the presumed solidarity of a learned profession and more to do with the characteristics of the community in which professional practice takes root.
