The history of Ukrainian..Canadian women has never before been told so completely from the women's perspective, and Swyripa has made a valuable contribution to the historiography of Canada's female pioneers. By exploring the activities and goals of various women's organizations, she examines these women's sense of their own identity both within the boundaries of the Ukrainian community itself and within the larger Canadian context. Such history would be autohistory because it would be written by Native Americans themselves-and by those "who have an Amerindian soul" (p. 105). The "social ethic" in the title is to be a whole new "science": "The moral code specific to [Native] America is so distinctive that the study of it, through history, constitutes a science" (p. 104).

This book is tremendously valuable as a tool for understanding not only linguistic research but for understanding the life and culture of an Ojibwe woman. Angeline Williams, Biidaasigekwe or "Sunlight Woman," came to Virginia in 1941 from Sugar Island on the St. Mary's River to teach the Ojibwe language to Leonard Bloomfield. Bloomfield's subsequent translations and understanding of the Algonquian language family led to significant advances and changes in the study of linguistics. This series of Ojibwe stories and their up-todate translations to English illustrate the thoroughness of Bloomfield's linguistic research.

In 1825 a space observer orbiting the earth could have looked down on two enormous land masses separated by more than 7000 miles. In the southern hemisphere the great body of land was Australia, an insular continent surrounded by the southern seas. In the northern hemisphere the great body of land was the United States, framed on east and west by oceans, bordered on the north by the even greater land of Canada and on the south by the lesser land of Mexico. Australia and the United States were roughly the same size, some three million square miles.

From 1889 until his death in 1952, ]. E. Stimson photographed Wyoming scenes. A year after he died, the state of Wyoming purchased the 7526 photographs, many of which were 8" x 10" glassplate negatives. Although he seems less well known, Stimson was to Wyoming photography what Solomon Butcher was in Nebraska or L. A. Huffman was in eastern Montana.

Newspapers played a key role in disseminating information and, unfortunately, misinformation about the Ghost Dance among the Lakotas. They also contributed to tension between the United States and the Lakotas that resulted in the grisly massacre at Wounded Knee. George R. Kolbenschlag's A Whirlwind Passes: News Correspondents and the Sioux Indian Disturbances of 1890-1891 sheds light on the men and women responsible for reporting on the Ghost Dance and the Wounded Knee Massacre and lends understanding to the nature of the reporters' activities.

Robert Kroetsch, whose approaches to novel writing extend from the primarily realist novel But We Are Exiles (1965) to the clearly post-modernist What the Crow Said (1978) and the somewhat less postmodern Alibi (1983), has left equally wide..ranging impressions on the English--Canadian critical landscape. From Zane Grey novels to the television series Rawhide, the cattle-trailing period has always fascinated Americans. Jimmy M. Skaggs presents a very readable account of this brief but very important period in the settlement of the American West. Skaggs an economic historian structures his work as a study of the activities of Great Plains cattle-trailing contractors. First published in 1973 and now reprinted the book also includes information on the establishment of stockyards and commission companies. These were vital to the efficient handling of the tremendous influx of beef cattle being trailed up from Texas following the Civil War.

J. Daniel Rogers' Objects of Change evaluates Arikara Indian contact with Euro-Americans and with Euro-American technology. He uses the Arikara material culture (or archaeological) record to determine the interactive process between the Arikara and the Euro-Americans. The shared worldviews of the indigenous peoples of North America are rooted and linked in a rich pre-Columbian artifactual and oral past that is still highly active today. One perspective into these worlds is obtained by understanding the nature of dreams and visions. In traditional Native American cultures, such a perspective is an essential part of the search for spiritual knowledge where dreams and visions represent contacts with primordial sources of empowerment. To perceive this search for empowerment requires an appreciation of the visionary experience, an experience which has often been denied or marginalized in the dominant cultures.1

The environment of the northern Plains caused settlers to make special adaptations to meet their need for shelter. Buildings were practical and often temporary. Dugouts and sod houses proliferated during the frontier period, then gave way to more permanent structures as settlement matured. By the late nineteenth century the balloon-frame building had become ubiquitous. Instead of requiring experienced carpenters fashioning large timbers with mortise-and-tenon joints as they had often done in the East, balloon framing utilized two-by-fours or similar pieces of lumber that amateur woodworkers could nail together without difficulty.
