Review Of Apache Mothers And Daughters: Four Generations Of A Family By Ruth Mcdonald Boyer And Narcissus Duffy Gayton, Beth Ritter
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Apache Mothers and Daughters is the narrative saga of four generations of Chiricahua Apache mothers and daughters. Against a poignant background of Chiricahua raiding and warfare, imprisonment, relocation, reservation confinement, and forced acculturation, this intensely personal history of four remarkable women's lives unfolds. The book's strength lies in its masterful weaving of solid ethnohistoric research with the oral history provided by Narcissus Duffy Gayton (and other informants) about herself, her mother Christine Kozine, her grandmother Beshad-e, and her great grandmother Dilth-cleyhen.
Review Of Braid Of Feathers: American Indian Law And Contemporary Tribal Life By Frank Pommersheim, Erin Hogan Fouberg
Review Of Braid Of Feathers: American Indian Law And Contemporary Tribal Life By Frank Pommersheim, Erin Hogan Fouberg
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The goal of Indian termination policy in the 1950s was to eliminate the reservations and thus eradicate the "Indian problem." Frank Pommersheim, professor of law at the University of South Dakota and member of the appellate court for the Cheyenne River and Rosebud Sioux tribes, convincingly argues that eliminating reservations would be disastrous for Indian tribes in the west. The establishment of reservations guaranteed tribes a measured separatism; today, they are the only places where tribes and their cultures are likely to survive. The author examines the portions ofthe United States legally designated Indian country and finds that Indian land …
What Kind Of Woman Would Work In Meatpacking, Anyway? World War Ii And The Road To Fair Employment, Deborah Fink
What Kind Of Woman Would Work In Meatpacking, Anyway? World War Ii And The Road To Fair Employment, Deborah Fink
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
World War II accelerated the movement of rural and small town Iowa women into manufacturing industry. Scholars have debated the significance of World War II for gender relations, but the recent consensus is that only focused studies of particular localities can address the complexity of the changes effected by the War. This study looks at Iowa women in meatpacking plants. Assessing the economic background, their prior efforts to enter packing plants, and the resistance they met in the plants makes their limited gains understandable. Women of rural and small town wage earning households had always been workers, usually in the …
Secondary School Curriculum Change In Rural Nebraska, Erwin Goldenstein, L. James Walter
Secondary School Curriculum Change In Rural Nebraska, Erwin Goldenstein, L. James Walter
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Critics of education in the United States asserted that high school students' performance fell after 1960. The decline has been linked to high school curricula which lost academic rigor in comparison to high school curricula in earlier decades. This study investigates the curricula of selected high schools in Nebraska, using random samples of graduating seniors taken every 10 years from 1953 to 1983. Findings show that the proportions of students' programs devoted to more demanding English, social sciences, mathematics, business, and natural science courses diminished during the study period. Grade inflation was observed in smaller public schools, but not in …
Review Of This Fragile Land: A Natural History Of The Nebraska Sandhills By Paul A. Johnsgard, Paul G. Risser
Review Of This Fragile Land: A Natural History Of The Nebraska Sandhills By Paul A. Johnsgard, Paul G. Risser
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Books like this are rarely written. Today, most writings about natural features and charismatic landscapes tend to be of two types: those with subjective, generalized descriptions written for the layperson, or technical articles with great detail but little in the way of human emotion. This book, written by a professor who spent fifteen summers in the Nebraska Sandhills, presents sufficient technical detail to satisfy the professional, but at the same time conveys the images and emotions of the Sandhills plants, animals, and people.
About 50,000 square kilometers-one-fourth of Nebraska-are covered by the Sandhills, making this the largest area of sand …

Nebraska Quilts, 1870-1989: Perspectives On Traditions And Change, Patricia Cox Crews, Wendelin Rich
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This study of Nebraska-made quilts spans the years from the 1870s through the 1980s, which extends from the early settlement of the state through the recent farm crisis. The descriptive profile of Nebraska quilts that emerged highlights the many similarities of Nebraska-made quilts to other American quilts of the same periods. Analysis shows that Nebraska quilts reflected the technological, artistic, and social trends of the times and points to changes in popularity of quilt types and pieced and applique patterns over the years. Although distinctive quilt types, styles, and quilting practices were reported in other states, Nebraska quilts are notable …
Multivariate Analysis Of Quality Of Life And Migration In North Dakota, Mohammad Hemmasi
Multivariate Analysis Of Quality Of Life And Migration In North Dakota, Mohammad Hemmasi
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Principle components analysis and multiple regression were used to examine spatial variations in quality of life indicators, and relationships between quality of life indicators and net migration rates for North Dakota counties between 1980 and 1990. Three quality of life dimensions were identified: Affluence, Suffering, and Demography. Of the three derived indicators, Affluence was the best overall statistical determinant of county migration rates. Adverse quality of life and migration trends were especially evident for counties with high non-white population proportions; such counties may need special development policies.
Review Of Restoring Prairie Wetlands: An Ecological Approach By Susan M. Galatowitsch And Arnold G. Van Der Valko, John Ortmann, James L. Stubbendieck
Review Of Restoring Prairie Wetlands: An Ecological Approach By Susan M. Galatowitsch And Arnold G. Van Der Valko, John Ortmann, James L. Stubbendieck
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
For reasons of national policy, environmental need, and funding availability, wetlands have become one of the most active areas for ecological restoration. But, as this timely and useful book points out, such projects too often have consisted of plugging the drain tile or ditch and letting nature do the rest. This approach has resulted in failure more often than recognized. Failure is obvious when a restored "wetland" remains dry because the regional water table has dropped, more subtle when natural plant communities fail to regenerate spontaneously, or nearly invisible when predation exceeds waterfowl production. Lack of planning and basic understanding …

Grasslands: An Introduction, Kathleen H. Keeler
Grasslands: An Introduction, Kathleen H. Keeler
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
"Grasslands" was the subject of the seventeenth annual symposium of the Center for Great Plains Studies, held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in April 1994. Grasslands are so basic to the Great Plains experience as to be invisible. If you stand here in eastern Nebraska, it is so far in any direction across grasslands to any other landscape (a cornfield is a planted grassland, after all) that the role of grasslands in our lives does not seem worth considering. Local variation is much more visible. You can't see the prairie for the grasses, to adapt the idiom. And yet, grasslands …

Training Sociologists: Professional Socialization And The Emergence Of Career Aspirations, Bruce Keith, Helen A. Moore
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The individual and departmental factors affecting graduate students' professional socialization were studied by employing data from 309 PhD students in 16 graduate programs in sociology. Using Rosenbaum's tournament model of opportunity structures and aspects of Tinto's model of social psychological integration, this study examines students' access to initial funding, resources in the department, indicators of prior ability, current professional activities, mentoring processes, and social psychological factors for their effects on socialization into the academic profession. Access to initial funding and to mentoring have substantial effects on PhD students' professional socialization, but prove to be less than rational processes in the …

Since the Nebraska State Historical Society began in the late 1870s, many newspaper editors have served on its Board. Among these was J. Sterling Morton, owner/editor of the Nebraska City News. Morton, and others like him, urged the Society to begin collecting newspapers as early as 1890. The Society's efforts to gather papers from all over the state have resulted in a large and significant historical collection. Researchers use the Society's newspapers today to gather information about historical events, to study the development and demise of communities, and to trace ancestors. Now, the Nebraska State Historical Society and the University …
Instrumentalist Policymaking: Policy Criteria In A Transactional Context, F. Gregory Hayden
Instrumentalist Policymaking: Policy Criteria In A Transactional Context, F. Gregory Hayden
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
As an extension of my recent policymaking chapter, Institutionalist Policymaking [Hayden 1993, 283-331], this paper deals with policy criteria in an instrumentalist or pragmatist framework. The works of Charles Peirce and Thorstein Veblen emphasized criteria-Peirce with explicit discussion of their character and Veblen with active application in his evaluations of various economies and institutions. Few scholars have continued in their tradition; Seymour Melman [1983], with his excellent Veblenian application of criteria in industrial policy studies, is a notable exception. Interest in the subject of criteria, except by individualist philosophers, has been scarce in the twentieth century until recently. Thirty years …

Hyperhomocysteinaemia has been identified as a risk factor for cerebrovascular, peripheral vascular, and coronary heart disease. Elevated levels of plasma homocysteine can result from genetic or nutrient-related disturbances in the trans-sulphuration or re-methylation pathways for homocysteine metabolism. 5,10-Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) catalyzes the reduction of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, the predominant circulatory form of folate and carbon donor for the re-methylation of homocysteine to methionine. Reduced MTHFR activity with a thermolabile enzyme has been reported in patients with coronary and peripheral artery diseases. We have identified a common mutation in MTHFR which alters a highly-conserved amino acid; the substitution occurs at a …

“I Do” Again: The Relational Dialectics Of Renewing Marriage Vows, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This study provides descriptive insight into the dialectical themes of one public relationship ritual in modern US society, the renewal of marital vows between spouses. Interpretive analyses of in-depth interview data revealed that this ritual allows spouses to manage three underlying dialectical contradictions: private-public, stability-change, and conventionality-uniqueness.
From Marx To Markets: Reform Of The University Economics Curriculum In Russia, Stanley L. Brue, Craig Macphee
From Marx To Markets: Reform Of The University Economics Curriculum In Russia, Stanley L. Brue, Craig Macphee
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
In June 1992, we taught a three-week seminar at Moscow State University that coincided with the beginning of a historic curriculum reform in Russia. The reform had two parts: (I) the replacement of the Marxist-Leninist three-year sequence of courses in political economy with a sequence on market economics and (2) substantial revision of other course requirements for the economics degree. br>
The occasion of our Russian visit was an invitation from Moscow State University to present a seminar on the principles of market economics. The seminar demonstrated the typical content and teaching techniques used in the American micro-macro principles course. …
Incremental Re-Engineering: Changes In The Roles Of Technical Services Librarians, Joan Giesecke, Katherine L. Walter
Incremental Re-Engineering: Changes In The Roles Of Technical Services Librarians, Joan Giesecke, Katherine L. Walter
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
The role of technical services librarians is being questioned as libraries downsize their operations. Technical services librarians can take a proactive approach to redefining their roles rather than waiting for change to be forced upon them. At one ARL library, technical services librarians initiated discussions with the administration to redefine their roles, increase their involvement in library decision-making, and improve their own career development opportunities. This paper will describe the process used at one library and how this model can be applied in other settings.

The Importance Of Selected Instructional Areas In The Present And Future Secondary Agricultural Education Curriculum As Perceived By Teachers, Principals, And Superintendents In Nebraska, Rick Foster, Lloyd C. Bell, Noel Erskine
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine how agricultural education instructors and their administrators viewed the importance of the current and future instructional areas as part of the agricultural education curriculum in Nebraska. The population of the study included all agricultural teachers, principals, and superintendents of secondary schools in Nebraska which offered agricultural education during the 1989-1990 school year (n=381). A random sample of forty schools were selected from the population. The respondents were asked to rate the importance of topics in both the current and future agricultural education curriculum. No instructional topics were identified as either very important …
A Model For The Evaluation And Reward Of Teaching In Agricultural Education, Leverne A. Barrett, Elizabeth Banset, Osmund Gilbertson
A Model For The Evaluation And Reward Of Teaching In Agricultural Education, Leverne A. Barrett, Elizabeth Banset, Osmund Gilbertson
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
In 1986, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), U.S. Department of Education, issued its first call for innovative approaches to solve the problem of reward for teaching in American universities. The FIPSE Board of Directors and staff recognized that the greatest disparity in the postsecondary reward system occurred in research-oriented universities where research garnered more rewards than teaching. They concluded that if teaching in American universities was going to improve, the reward structures in higher education needed to change. This article describes a plan designed to evaluate and reward teaching in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, …
United States V. Steinmetz: The Legal Legacy Of The Civil War, Revisited, Susan Poser, Elizabeth R. Varon
United States V. Steinmetz: The Legal Legacy Of The Civil War, Revisited, Susan Poser, Elizabeth R. Varon
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
One of the enduring and yet unresolved issues concerning the Civil War is its legal nature: Was it an insurrection or an international war? During the war and since, the United States courts have repeatedly been called upon to determine the status of property which was under the control of the Confederacy and its agents during the Civil War. In the process of making such determinations, the courts have reopened questions about the war's legal status. United States v. Steinmetz is such a case.

Creating Bicultural Identities: The Role Of School-Based Bilingual Paraprofessionals In Ontemporary Immigrant Accommodation (Two Kansas Case Studies), Edmund T. Hamann
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This study locates the professional and informal practices of school-based bilingual paraprofessionals (paras) in the context of the larger social phenomenon of acculturation, cultural brokerage, and identity construction. It demonstrates how the paras in two Kansas communities transform an assimilationist mandate into something quite different, the promotion of bicultural identities, as part of a process called “additive biculturalism.” Additive biculturalism incorporates Weiss’s characterization of paras as cultural brokers (1994), but expands upon it significantly. As the first part of additive biculturalism, bilingual paras model and promote bicultural identities among the English-Learner students and parents they work with. As the second …
The Challenge And Opportunity Of Recovering Wolf Populations, L. David Mech
The Challenge And Opportunity Of Recovering Wolf Populations, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The gray wolf once inhabited a wide variety of habitats throughout most of the northern hemisphere north of 20°N latitude. Because the animal preyed on livestock and competed with humans for wild prey, it was extirpated from much of its range outside of wilderness areas. Environmental awareness in the late 1960s brought for the wolf legal protection, increased research, and favorable media coverage. The species has increased in both Europe and North America, is beginning to reoccupy semiwilderness and agricultural land, and is causing increased damage to livestock. Because of the wolfs high reproductive rate and long dispersal tendencies, the …

Analyzing Correlations Of Three Types In Selected Lines Of Drosophila Melanogaster That Have Evolved Stable Extreme Geotactic Performance, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Jerry Hirsch, Stewart H. Berlocher
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The behavior-genetic analysis of Drosophila melanogaster with geotactic performance as the phenotype is an ideal model system with which to investigate the complex relations between heredity and behavior. As part of a long-term, 38-year study, we report 4 experiments that identify and analyze trait correlations in the selected high- and low-geotaxis lines. We performed F2 correlational analyses and backcrosses to examine 3 types of correlations: (a) genotype-genotype (alcohol dehydrogenase [Adh]-amylase [Amy]), (b) genotype-phenotype (Adh and Amy-geotaxis), and (c) phenotype-phenotype (mate preference–geotaxis). Only the Adh-geotaxis correlation survived meiosis and reappeared in the F …

Water Regulation Decisions In Central Kansas Affecting Cheyenne Bottoms Wetland And Neighboring Farmers, Leslie Aileen Duram
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
A water use regulation order by the Chief Engineer of the Division of Water Resources of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture addressed a controversial issue: water allocation for agricultural, wetland, and urban users in Central Kansas. The specific study area includes Cheyenne Bottoms Wetland, a preserve with important habitat conditions for many migratory bird species. This region is economically dependent on irrigated agriculture. Groundwater withdrawal for irrigation had caused the water table to decline and left the wetland with no consistent water source. The Chief Engineer required many farmers to reduce their irrigation water use. An evaluation of this …
