From Notable Women in the Physical Sciences: A Biographical Dictionary:

Astronomer Judith Sharn Young has been prolific throughout her 15-year professional career, publishing over 100 papers and giving nearly as many talks and seminars. Her interests lie in galaxy formation and evolution, star formation, and interstellar matter (the matter that lies between the stars in galaxies). She has received several professional awards and honors, including, in 1986, the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award of the American Physical Society. Young was the first recipient of this award, which is given to a woman in the early stages of her career who has …

Birds Of Western North America, Lawrence D. Igl Jan 1997

Birds Of Western North America, Lawrence D. Igl

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

This photographic identification guide covers more than 530 species of birds that regularly occur in the western half of North America. It is slightly larger than most field guides, including the popular National Geographic Society's Field Guide to the Birds of North America, which is continental in coverage. Nonetheless, it is small and sturdy enough to conveniently carry in a jacket pocket or backpack. The field guide begins with a short section on how to use the book; the bulk of the book consists of species accounts. Each species account occurs on one page (a few species are jointly …

Metapopulations And The Real World, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1997

Metapopulations And The Real World, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Metapopulations are currently a hot topic in ecological theory and conservation biology. Fundamentally, a metapopulation is a population of populations, and the term describes certain populations that inhabit discrete habitat patches. Individuals move between patches often enough to recolonize extirpated patches, but not so frequently that the patches exhibit similar population trajectories. The term "metapopulation" was coined and a theory formalized by Richard Levins in 1969, but the concept of spatially divided populations has been around for a longer time.

Changes In Breeding Bird Populations In North Dakota: 1967 To 1992-93, Lawrence Igl, Douglas Johnson Jan 1997

Changes In Breeding Bird Populations In North Dakota: 1967 To 1992-93, Lawrence Igl, Douglas Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We compared breeding bird populations in North Dakota using surveys conducted in 1967 and 1992-93. In decreasing order, the five most frequently occurring species were Horned Lark (Eremophila alpestris), Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater), Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta), Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), and Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus). The five most abundant species-Horned Lark, Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus), Red-winged Blackbird, Western Meadowlark, and Brown-headed Cowbird-accounted for 31-41% of the estimated statewide breeding bird population in the three years. Although species composition remained relatively similar among years, between year patterns in …

Perspectives On The Diagnosis, Epizootiology, And Control Of The 1973 Duck Plague Epizootic In Wild Waterfowl At Lake Andes, South Dakota, Gary Pearson, Delmar Cassidy Jan 1997

Perspectives On The Diagnosis, Epizootiology, And Control Of The 1973 Duck Plague Epizootic In Wild Waterfowl At Lake Andes, South Dakota, Gary Pearson, Delmar Cassidy

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

An epizootic of duck plague occurred in early 1973 in a population of 163,500 wild waterfowl, primarily mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), wintering on Lake Andes and the nearby Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota (USA). The diagnosis was based on pathologic lesions and confirmed by virus isolation. Control measures included quarantine, attempts to reduce virus contamination of the area, dispersal of waterfowl, and monitoring of wild waterfowl populations for mortality. The epizootic resulted in documented mortality of 18% and estimated mortality of 26% of the waterfowl at risk. Prompt implementation of control measures might have limited mortality to approximately …

The Geographic Contribution To Studies Of Pilgrimage: Introduction To Sacred Places, Sacred Spaces, Robert Stoddard, Alan Morinis Jan 1997

The Geographic Contribution To Studies Of Pilgrimage: Introduction To Sacred Places, Sacred Spaces, Robert Stoddard, Alan Morinis

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The religions of humankind, from the great traditions of Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism, to sectarian cults arid tribal religions, have all singled out spatial referents as places that embody or enshrine the religious ideals of the culture. These sacred referents and the complex web of logistics, demographics, economics, and related activities that associate with the visitation patterns to such sacred places are the subject of this book.

Psychological Distress And Help Seeking In Rural America, Dan R. Hoyt, Rand D. Conger, Jill Gaffney Valde, Karen Weihs Jan 1997

Psychological Distress And Help Seeking In Rural America, Dan R. Hoyt, Rand D. Conger, Jill Gaffney Valde, Karen Weihs

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The implications of exposure to acute and chronic stressors, and seeking mental health care, for increased psychological distress are examined. Research on eco¬nomic stress, psychological distress, and rural agrarian values each point to in¬creasing variability within rural areas. Using data from a panel study of 1,487 adults, a model predicting changes in depressive symptoms was specified and tested. Results show effects by size of place for men but not for women. Men living in rural villages of under 2,500 or in small towns of 2,500 to 9,999 people had significantly greater increases in depressive symptoms than men living in the …

On Two Eras Of African Archaeology: Colonial And National, Clea Koff Jan 1997

On Two Eras Of African Archaeology: Colonial And National, Clea Koff

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper examines the role of archaeology in the political agendas of both colonial and post-colonial African governments. Both forms of government have utilized selective interpretations of the archaeological record to further their political goals. The marriage between archaeologists and colonial administrations is examined in light of the temporal coincidence between the international rise of professional archaeology in the 18908 and the zenith of colonial occupation in sub-Saharan Africa. The concurrent nature of these two phenomena resulted in employment within colonial administrations for the majority of professional archaeologists. The archaeology of the post-independenoe era reflects a shift in paradigm, as …

Looted Archaeological Sites: Are They Worthy Of Scientific Investigation?, Michelle J. Lundeen Jan 1997

Looted Archaeological Sites: Are They Worthy Of Scientific Investigation?, Michelle J. Lundeen

Nebraska Anthropologist

Since the late 1800s, looting of prehistoric and historic Bles has been recognized as a serious threat to archaeological resources throughout the world (Knoll 1991}. Looting destroys both recorded and unrecorded sites in the United states (Ahlstrom 1992, Honeycutt et al. 1985, stuart 1989). With such a great amount of looting taking place, this research paper asks a basic question: Why do archaeologists not investigate looted archaeological sites as they do nonlooted sites and features? This question will be answered by reviewing the literature about looting including the archaeological reaction to looting. Two looted features, potted privies, will be discussed …

Productivity Measurement In The Presence Of "Poorly Priced" Goods, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin Dec 1996

Productivity Measurement In The Presence Of "Poorly Priced" Goods, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Young (1995) estimated Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth for Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea. He reported moderate growth rates for these four regions. This means that rapid growth of GDP in these four economies is due mainly to fast increase of inputs. Young (2000) also estimated the TFP growth rate of China to be 1.4% per year during the period of 1978 to 1998. Similar to his claim for the four 'Asian Tigers', he concluded that 'the productivity performance of the non-agricultural economy (of China) during the reform period is respectable, but not outstanding.' China's real GDP grew …

Underinsurance: The Hidden Dimension To The Health Care Crisis, John Comer, Keith Mueller, Joseph Blankenau Oct 1996

Underinsurance: The Hidden Dimension To The Health Care Crisis, John Comer, Keith Mueller, Joseph Blankenau

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The paper examines the issue of underinsurance. It discusses how the concept can be measured and employs the measure in assessing the number of underinsured in the State of Nebraska. The paper examines the social and economic characteristics of the uninsured, both an at-risk group defined by low income and a group with higher income, and compares each to a corresponding set who are not underinsured. The paper reports a multivariate analysis of factors related to underinsurance and compares the above categories with respect to health status and access to health care.

Populist Entrepreneur: Douglas Bruce And The Tax And Government Limitation Moment In Colorado, 1986-1992, Daniel A. Smith Oct 1996

Populist Entrepreneur: Douglas Bruce And The Tax And Government Limitation Moment In Colorado, 1986-1992, Daniel A. Smith

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In 1992, Douglas Bruce, a non-practicing lawyer and landlord from Colorado Springs, Colorado, successfully "mobilized" popular support for Amendment 1, a ballot initiative that has restricted the taxing and spending powers of state and local governments in Colorado. For most Coloradans, "Douglas Bruce" is now a household name. Using a historical perspective to examine the role Bruce played in advancing Amendment 1, this study offers the analytic concepts of faux populism, populist entrepreneurs, and the public mood. Faux populism is the transposition of an ill-defined, but tangible public mood into a ready-made ballot initiative that is offered to the people …

Review Of The Limits Of Agrarian Radicalism: Western Populism And American Politics By Peter H. Argersinger, Scott G. Mcnall Oct 1996

Review Of The Limits Of Agrarian Radicalism: Western Populism And American Politics By Peter H. Argersinger, Scott G. Mcnall

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Peter Argersinger is one of the best known and influential writers on American Populism. His clear, well-crafted pieces on the origins and eventual demise of the Populist movement are outstanding in their ability to help contemporary readers understand the turmoil and complexity of late nineteenth- century American politics. Those familiar with his writing will find The Limits of Agrarian Radicalism a compilation of previous work spanning a quarter century of scholarly effort with an entirely new chapter as a bonus. My personal favorite, "Road to a Republican Waterloo," explains why a third party farmer's movement triumphed over a well-entrenched Republican …

Review Of Rethinking Restructuring: Gender And Change In Canada Edited By Isabella Bakker, Barbara L. Marshall Oct 1996

Review Of Rethinking Restructuring: Gender And Change In Canada Edited By Isabella Bakker, Barbara L. Marshall

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Any observer of the recent politics and economics of Western democratic states will be familiar with the starting point of this collection: that there has been a significant shift in governing practices related to global economic restructuring, informed by a "neo-liberal consensus" that favors shrinking government and deregulating economies. This book tackles the implications of this trend in Canada, but with the specific aim of demonstrating the simultaneous "gender erosion and intensification" integral to restructuring. Isabella Bakker has assembled some of Canada's finest feminist scholars to explore the often contradictory effects of current political-economic strategies on the Canadian (and global) …

The Challenge Of Waste Stewardship And Sustainable Development: A Study Of Municipal Waste Management In Rural Manitoba, C. Emdad Haque, Karen T. Hamberg Oct 1996

The Challenge Of Waste Stewardship And Sustainable Development: A Study Of Municipal Waste Management In Rural Manitoba, C. Emdad Haque, Karen T. Hamberg

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Despite the recent enactment of federal and provincial reduction targets, the majority of government and private sector research has focused primarily on household recycling strategies while little attention was given to other dimensions critical to the achievement of sustainable waste management. Although distinct problems may exist in rural jurisdictions, the literature continues to address the problems inherent in the management of wastes in urban centers rather than rural communities. The aim of this research was to close this gap by examining the issue of municipal waste management in rural Manitoba. Special emphasis was placed upon: (1) the amount and type …

Review Of Editing Early And Historical Atlases Edited By Joan Winearls, Theodore Binnema Oct 1996

Review Of Editing Early And Historical Atlases Edited By Joan Winearls, Theodore Binnema

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Researchers have only slowly recognized the possibilities and pitfalls of using maps as cultural artifacts. Only recently have historians of cartography shown that embedded in every map is valuable information about the cartographer and the society that produced it. Still, there is almost no literature on how editol's have influenced the shape of early and historical atlases. Editing Early and Historical Atlases is intended to scrutinize this lacuna. In their approach, however, most of its articles use the lenses of traditional historiography.

The four articles in the first section-by James Akerman, Walter Goffart, Mary Pedley, and Anne Godlewska-provide a historiography …

Review Of Conservation Of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options, Edited By S. R. Johnson And Aziz Bouzaher, David J. Wishart Oct 1996

Review Of Conservation Of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options, Edited By S. R. Johnson And Aziz Bouzaher, David J. Wishart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book stems from a symposium entitled "Conservation of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options" held in Kansas City in April of 1993, the purpose of which was to forge a "Great Plains regional environmental initiative." The editors explain what this means in an introduction that also summarizes the book's contents and offers recommendations: only with integrated community-based management of identifiable ecosystems, they argue, can the Great Plains avoid further severe ecological distress. The most highly touted word in the volume is "sustainability," the most castigated, "monoculture." And who could disagree with that?

Conservation of Great Plains Ecosystems is …

Review Of Nebraskaland Magazine's Weather And Climate Of Nebraska, Lincoln: Nebraska Game And Parks Commission, 1996, Pamela Naber Knox Oct 1996

Review Of Nebraskaland Magazine's Weather And Climate Of Nebraska, Lincoln: Nebraska Game And Parks Commission, 1996, Pamela Naber Knox

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Weather and Climate of Nebraska is a colorful new atlas describing the seasonal variations of weather in the central High Plains. Published as the January-February 1996 issue of NEBRASKAland magazine, it can also stand alone as a general reference text. The title's layout emphasizes "Weather" over "Climate," a theme that pervades much of the atlas.

The publication contains seven major chapters plus introduction, almanac, glossary, and index. Following the Introduction, which sets the stage in Nebraska, Chapter One describes the reasons for the seasons and how seasonal variations affect the state. Chapters Two through Five highlight weather and climate features …

Review Of Decision At Midnight: Inside The Canada-Us Free-Trade Negotiations By Michael Hart With Bill Dymond And Colin Robertson, Christopher D. Merrett

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The issue of free trade has fueled political debate in North America for the past decade. The authors, members of the Canadian free trade negotiating team, provide an inside view and defense of the Canada-US. Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Their three-part story begins with ail outline of the economic theory and macroeconomic reality that prompted Canada and the United States to consider free trade. It also reveals the political skirmishes in Canada and the US. that set the stage for FTA negotiations. Section two delineates the actual free trade negotiations, key negotiators, and issues. The authors describe how philosophical differences …

Review Of Guide To Rural Data By Priscilla Salant And Anita J. Waller, Cornelia Butler Flora

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

With increased devolution of responsibility to rural places, reliable, timely, and meaningful data take on added importance for local governments and local nonprofit organizations. Pressures for data on which to base allocations of resources and to assess the impact of those allocations are further intensified by the rapid changes occurring in rural America. This short book provides those who need to know what is happening locally with an overview of what data are available, what they mean, and their limitations.

South Dakota Gaming: A Regional Analysis, Erin Hogan Fouberg Oct 1996

South Dakota Gaming: A Regional Analysis, Erin Hogan Fouberg

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The referendum and initiative processes were used six times between 1982 and 1994 to address the issue of gaming in South Dakota. Four of the six votes resulted in pro-gaming outcomes. This study examines how and why voters in the state 50 sixty-six counties varied geographically in their levels of gaming support over time. Five different ways of regionalizing the state are advanced as possible explanations, and then analyzed using maps, analysis of variance tests, and eta correlation coefficients. The popular East River-West River cultural-political divide is found to serve as the best explanation of the geographical distribution of gaming …

Review Of Planting The Future: Developing An Agriculture That Sustains Land And Community Edited By Elizabeth A. R. Bird, Gordon L. Bultena, And John C. Gardner, Charles A. Francis Oct 1996

Review Of Planting The Future: Developing An Agriculture That Sustains Land And Community Edited By Elizabeth A. R. Bird, Gordon L. Bultena, And John C. Gardner, Charles A. Francis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Why should you care about agriculture? Planting the Future provides an eloquent description of the current state of this' most basic human endeavor so critical to survival. Based on a series of surveys and on-farm studies in the North Central and Western states, the book recognizes the bounty of our conventional agricultural industry. More importantly for the future, it details a series of critical problems in the environment, the distribution of economic benefits, and the social dislocation resulting from the consolidation of lands and heavy reliance on fossil fuels. Today's productivity and cheap food in the market have hidden expenses …
