Review Of In Search Of Ancient Alberta By Barbara Huck And Doug Whiteway, Raymond Le Blanc Apr 1999

Review Of In Search Of Ancient Alberta By Barbara Huck And Doug Whiteway, Raymond Le Blanc

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Using the backdrop of geological, palaeontological, and archaeological data, the authors state their objective as offering "readers an accessible, route-oriented approach to more than 65 outstanding sites in the province, before it was a province." The book is a guide providing basic descriptions of these sites, lavishly supplemented with numerous color photographs and information on how to visit each one. In attempting to strike a fine balance among its different themes, it is neither overwhelming in its detail, nor so superficial as to be useless to all but the complete novice. As an academic and an archaeologist, I approached the …

Distance Education In Nebraska: Access And Strategies, Sarah Cunningham, S. Kay Rockwell, David W. Brooks Mar 1999

Distance Education In Nebraska: Access And Strategies, Sarah Cunningham, S. Kay Rockwell, David W. Brooks

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

As the fifteenth largest state, geographically, with the tenth smallest population, Nebraska faces many unique challenges. Sixty percent of the population resides in the eastern-third of the state while 33 of the 93 counties in Nebraska have a population of less than 5,000. One of the challenges facing such a geographi-cally dispersed state is how to support educational and technological efforts that benefit all of its citizens. Nebraska has been a leader in distance education. Nebraska became the first state to own its own satellite transponder in 1990. It supports public television and radio transmitters with digital transmission providing 28 …

Philosophy And Purposes Of Distance Education, Dr. Janet K. Poley, Mr. Erik France Mar 1999

Philosophy And Purposes Of Distance Education, Dr. Janet K. Poley, Mr. Erik France

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

In considering how best to tackle this topic, I ultimately decided that in Nebraska the "best" approach is usually the "most straight forward" one. Given that much of the conversation about distance education is filled with myth and marketing hype, I decided what we could best contribute to the conversation would be the facts. While some of the other authors may have a better in-depth grasp of distance education opportunities and realities in Nebraska, Erik and I come as native Nebraskans with a good understanding of the history, economy, communities and cultures in our home state. My early faculty career …

The Policy Perspective In Distance Education: A Futures Landscape/Panorama, James W. King, Dara Lacy, John Mcmillian, Keith Bartels, Michelle Fredilino

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

This paper discusses distance education policy, specifically for Nebraska postsecondary institutions. Examples come from the Nebraska Community College System, Nebraska private colleges and universities, the Nebraska State College System, and the University of Nebraska system. While the pre-K to 12 educational system is not our objective, we will make some comments regarding linkages between them and the postsecondary institutions. 2 This draft paper includes a preliminary assessment of existing postsecondary distance education policies. We provide a general identification and analysis of policies and some initial conclusions and recommendations. Several useful tools for distance education policy development will be presented. We …

The Collegial Environment And The Functional Organization, Mary K. Bolin Mar 1999

The Collegial Environment And The Functional Organization, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Libraries are generally organized by function in order to carry out their mission efficiently. Academic librarians who are faculty also have a collegial organization that exists apart from any functional arrangement. Public and technical services librarians in this sort of organization are colleagues who have responsibility for the library in the way that teaching faculty are responsible for the programs in their departments. This article discusses the characteristics of the successful collegial organization and the relationship of technical and public services librarians in a collegial library.

Purification And Properties Of Nadh-Dependent 5,10-Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (Metf) From Escherichia Coli, Christal A. Sheppard, Elizabeth E. Trimmer, Rowena G. Matthews Feb 1999

Purification And Properties Of Nadh-Dependent 5,10-Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (Metf) From Escherichia Coli, Christal A. Sheppard, Elizabeth E. Trimmer, Rowena G. Matthews

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

A K-12 strain of Escherichia coli that overproduces methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MetF) has been constructed, and the enzyme has been purified to apparent homogeneity. A plasmid specifying MetF with six histidine residues added to the C terminus has been used to purify histidine-tagged MetF to homogeneity in a single step by affinity chromatography on nickel-agarose, yielding a preparation with specific activity comparable to that of the unmodified enzyme. The native protein comprises four identical 33-kDa subunits, each of which contains a molecule of noncovalently bound flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). No additional cofactors or metals have been detected. The purified enzyme catalyzes …

Nebraskans' Educational Needs, Access To Technology, J.W. Furgason, S.K. Rockwell

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

The Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Surveys (NASIS) produce current, topical information about Nebraskans and monitor change in quality of life.
The 1997 NASIS included questions that addressed four broad areas of public input:
• Perceptions of higher education institutions and educational needs
• Perceptions of the University of Nebraska and its programs
• Awareness and perceptions of University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension and its programs
• Use of electronic and communications technology in the home and workplace
Data were collected via telephone surveys. Data addressing perceptions about higher education were collected November 1997 through January 1998 from a random sample …

Nebraska Network 21: Publications

During 1998 the NN21 Food Systems in 2020 Action Team at the University of Nebraska sponsored two symposiums to stimulate thinking and discussion about the nature of the food system that will evolve by the year 2020, and the potential role of the University of Nebraska in shaping that system and educating people to participate effectively in it. The first symposium, "The Food System for 2020: Nebraska's Opportunities", was held on January 14, with approximately 185 in attendance. The program (attached as Appendix 1) was intended to bring to bear some of the best thinking in the country about how …

Scenario Planning And Collection Development, Joan Giesecke Jan 1999

Scenario Planning And Collection Development, Joan Giesecke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

In changing times with many uncertainties, managers need planning processes that encourage flexibility and creativity. We can think strategically about the future; we can envision an ideal future. But in the practical, real world of decision-making, we need a system that helps us to both think the unthinkable and plan for multiple options. We can not always guess correctly about the future, so we need to design techniques that let us envision a variety of options and then plan for those possibilities.

One technique that can help managers plan for multiple futures is scenario-driven planning. Scenario planning is a structured, disciplined …

Random Questions About Law School And The Law: The World's First Socratic Law Review Article, C. Steven Bradford Jan 1999

Random Questions About Law School And The Law: The World's First Socratic Law Review Article, C. Steven Bradford

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Many law professors utilize the Socratic method in their teaching, presumably because wisdom is to be found in the questions them selves. Yet, no law professors use the Socratic method in their writing. Why? I believe it is a wise marketing decision by law professors. Anyone off the street can read a law review article, and receive its wisdom for free. If law professors disclosed their full Socratic wisdom in law reviews, no one would come to law school, and law professors would be unemployed. By withholding their Socratic questions from law reviews, law professors have forced students to pay …

Expanding The Investment Company Act: The Sec's Manipulation Of The Definition Of Security, C. Steven Bradford Jan 1999

Expanding The Investment Company Act: The Sec's Manipulation Of The Definition Of Security, C. Steven Bradford

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is sometimes accused of using the administrative process "to graft new, substantive standards and obligations onto existing statutes or SEC rules." Through the use of the no-action letter process, the SEC staff sometimes creates substantive securities law which is inconsistent with the relevant federal securities statutes and case law. Many of these staff positions "go far beyond reasonable and fair explanations of existing statutes or SEC rules." However, in substantive areas lacking definitive case law or rules, these no-action letters assume an extraordinary importance to securities lawyers and regulated entities. For all practical purposes, …

How The Public Views The State Courts A 1999 National Survey, Frank A. Bennack Jr. Jan 1999

How The Public Views The State Courts A 1999 National Survey, Frank A. Bennack Jr.

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The survey covered four broad areas: access to the courts, timeliness of court decisions, fairness of judicial decision-making, independence and responsiveness of the courts to the public and to changing conditions in society.

The questions came at the issues from many angles, but when all the figures were totaled and all the comments considered, the courts came out just okay on average.

This conclusion is a mix of high, medium and low marks across different categories. Sometimes there was broad consensus and other times views differed widely by race, ethnic group, income and other factors.

Habitat Associations Of Migrating And Overwintering Grassland Birds In Southern Texas, Lawrence D. Igl, Bart M. Ballard Jan 1999

Habitat Associations Of Migrating And Overwintering Grassland Birds In Southern Texas, Lawrence D. Igl, Bart M. Ballard

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We report on the habitat associations of 21 species of grassland birds over- wintering in or migrating through southern Texas, during 1991-1992 and 1992-1993. Ninety percent of our grassland bird observations were made during winter and spring, and only 10% occurred during fall. Grassland species made up a high proportion of the total bird densities in grassland and shrub-grassland habitats, but much lower proportions in the habitats with more woody vegetation. Fewer grassland species were observed in grassland and woodland than in brushland, parkland, and shrub-grassland habitats. Grassland birds generally were found in higher densities in habitats that had woody …

The World Food And Agricultural Situation - A U.S. Perspective, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure to be here in Minnesota at this year's Global Food and Agriculture Summit. And it is a special pleasure to share the podium today with lots of long-time friends, many of whom have forever been associated with American agriculture. would like to focus today on what kind of future might be ahead of us all as we contemplate the excitement of entering a new century. As we look back, we can only conclude that the 20th century was mighty exciting too, and assuredly challenging from an agricultural policy standpoint.

Relationship Between Youth And Parent Perceptions Of Family Environment And Social Anxiety, Jeffrey B. Caster, Heidi M. Inderbitzen, Debra A. Hope Jan 1999

Relationship Between Youth And Parent Perceptions Of Family Environment And Social Anxiety, Jeffrey B. Caster, Heidi M. Inderbitzen, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study concurrently examined the relationship between adolescents’ perceptions of their parents’ child-rearing styles and family environment and their reports of social anxiety. Adolescents reporting higher levels of social anxiety perceived their parents as being more socially isolating, overly concerned about others’ opinions, ashamed of their shyness and poor performance, and less socially active than did youth reporting lower levels of social anxiety. Parent perceptions of child-rearing styles and family environment, however, did not differ between parents of socially anxious and nonsocially anxious adolescents. Results are comparable to studies using adult retrospective reports and are discussed with regard to the …

Cataloging Environmental Impact Statements And Related Documents, Mary K. Bolin Jan 1999

Cataloging Environmental Impact Statements And Related Documents, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) have been published by federal agencies such as the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Environmental Protection Agency, since the 1970s. These government documents can be an important source of environmental information. Some EISs are depository items, but most are not. Only a small number of each EIS is printed, and they are not always easy to identify and acquire. Their important content and fugitive nature makes it essential to catalog them to make their existence widely known. This article uses the timber sale EISs published by the …

Effects Of Fire Retardant Chemical And Fire Suppressant Foam On Shrub Steppe Vegetation In Northern Nevada, Diane L. Larson, Wesley E. Newton, Patrick J. Anderson, Steven J. Stein Jan 1999

Effects Of Fire Retardant Chemical And Fire Suppressant Foam On Shrub Steppe Vegetation In Northern Nevada, Diane L. Larson, Wesley E. Newton, Patrick J. Anderson, Steven J. Stein

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of fire retardant chemical (Phos-Chek G75-F*) and fire suppressant foam (Silv-Ex) application, alone and in combination with fire, on Great Basin shrub steppe vegetation. We measured growth, resprouting, flowering, and incidence of galling insects on Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus and Artemisia tridentata. These characteristics were not affected by any chemical treatment. We measured community characteristics, including species richness, evenness, and diversity, and number of stems of woody and herbaceous plants in riparian and upland plots. Of these characteristics, only species richness and number of stems/m2 clearly responded to the chemical …

Alpha Status, Dominance, And Division Of Labor In Wolf Packs, L. David Mech Jan 1999

Alpha Status, Dominance, And Division Of Labor In Wolf Packs, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The prevailing view of a wolf (Canis lupus) pack is that of a group of individuals ever vying for dominance but held in check by the “alpha” pair, the alpha male and alpha female. Most research on the social dynamics of wolf packs, however, has been conducted on non-natural assortments of captive wolves. Here I describe the wolf-pack social order as it occurs in nature, discuss the alpha concept and social dominance and submission, and present data on the precise relationships among members in free-living packs, based on a literature review and 13 summers of observations of wolves …

Pisatin Demethylation By Fungal Pathogens And Nonpathogens Of Pea: Association With Pisatin Tolerance And Virulence, Leslie M. Delserone, K. Mccluskey, D. E. Matthews, H. D. Vanetten Jan 1999

Pisatin Demethylation By Fungal Pathogens And Nonpathogens Of Pea: Association With Pisatin Tolerance And Virulence, Leslie M. Delserone, K. Mccluskey, D. E. Matthews, H. D. Vanetten

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have indicated that detoxification of their hosts’ phytoalexins is a tolerance mechanism for some true fungi, but not the fungus-like Oomycota, and may be involved in determining the virulence of a pathogen. In the present study, the associations between demethylation of the pea phytoalexin pisatin, tolerance to pisatin, and virulence on pea were examined for 50 fungal isolates which represent 17 species of pathogens and nonpathogens of pea. All isolates of Pythium coloratum and P. irregulare failed to metabolize and were sensitive to pisatin, consistent with previous observations that members of the Oomycota generally lack the ability …

Theodore Dru Alison Cockerell, Sue Ann Gardner Jan 1999

Theodore Dru Alison Cockerell, Sue Ann Gardner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Theodore Dru Alison Cockerell, entomologist and systematic biologist, published nearly 4,000 papers, some of them only a few lines long. Cockerell’s special interest in bees led him to describe and name specimens from the United States, the West Indies, Honduras, the Philippines, Africa, and Asia. He published at least 5,500 names for species and varieties of bees and almost 150 names for genera and subgenera. It has been estimated that this represented over a quarter of all known species of bees during his lifetime. Above all, however, Cockerell was a general systematist. In addition to extensive studies of bees and …
