Cornhusker Economics

Even with the recent rains that have fallen across parts of Nebraska, drought continues to plague farmers and ranchers and always brings up the question of consequences to the tax bill.

Nebraska Custom Rates Changes From 2004 To 2006, H. Douglas Jose Jun 2006

Nebraska Custom Rates Changes From 2004 To 2006, H. Douglas Jose

Cornhusker Economics

The increase in machinery costs this year has created uncertainty about what are fair costs for custom services. Fuel costs certainly are a major factor, but the purchase or “sticker” prices of machinery and the repair costs have increased as well. Fuel costs have increased about 46 percent over the past two years since the last Custom Rates surveys were taken in the Spring of 2004. Over the same period, overhead costs which include taxes, interest and insurance went up 14 percent and labor costs increased 10 percent. These increases are measured by input cost indexes reported by USDA’s National …

The ‘Berlin Declaration’ was published in 2003 as a guideline to policy makers to promote the Internet as a functional instrument for a global scientific knowledge base. Because knowledge is derived from data, the principles of the ‘Berlin Declaration’ should apply to data as well. Today, access to scientific data is hampered by structural deficits in the publication process. Data publication needs to offer authors an incentive to publish data through long-term repositories. Data publication also requires an adequate licence model that protects the intellectual property rights of the author while allowing further use of the data by the scientific …

Real Estate Assessment And Tax Breaks: Reality Or Myth?, Bruce Johnson Jun 2006

Real Estate Assessment And Tax Breaks: Reality Or Myth?, Bruce Johnson

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska continues to be one of the highest states in terms of its dependency on property taxation for funding governmental functions. For agricultural real estate property owners, this tax can, and often does, become quite burdensome since it does not relate directly to the level of income earnings (off the land) or the benefits received (the majority of property tax obligations are for public schools and not propertyenhancing services like police and fire protection, roads/bridges, etc.). It is little wonder that rural citizens are particularly concerned about it.

Agricultural Disaster Assistance, Bradley Lubben Jun 2006

Agricultural Disaster Assistance, Bradley Lubben

Cornhusker Economics

The U.S. Congress has been working on an emergency supplemental appropriations bill in recent weeks to provide funding for defense, the global war on terror, and additional hurricane relief in response to the lingering needs following the devastating set of hurricanes in 2005. Currently, the bill sits with a Conference Committee to resolve differences between versions passed in the Senate and in the House of Representatives. Expectations are that the bill will be completed before the end of June as funding for continued defense operations will become critical, but exactly what will be in the final version of the bill …

Factors Influencing Soil Invertebrate Communities In Riparian Grasslands Of The Central Platte River Floodplain, Craig A. Davis, Jane E. Austin, Deborah A. Buhl Jun 2006

Factors Influencing Soil Invertebrate Communities In Riparian Grasslands Of The Central Platte River Floodplain, Craig A. Davis, Jane E. Austin, Deborah A. Buhl

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

In the Platte River Valley of central Nebraska, USA, riparian grasslands (also known as wet meadows) have been severely impacted by a reduction in river flows, causing lower ground-water levels and altered seasonal hydroperiods. The potential impacts of these hydrologic changes, as well as the environmental factors that influence wet meadow soil invertebrate communities, are not well understood. An understanding of the ecological processes that influence these invertebrate communities is crucial for maintaining and restoring wet meadows along the Platte River. Our objectives were to describe the soil invertebrate community of wet meadows throughout the growing season and to examine …

Modern Day Slavery: Spotlight On The 2006 "Trafficking In Persons Report," Forced Labor And Sex Trafficking At The World Cup, U.S. House Of Representatives Committee On International Relations

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The Subcommittee will hear expert testimony today concerning the scourge of human trafficking—modern-day slavery. As I know many people know by now, the United States Government estimates that between 600,000 to 800,000 women, children, and men are brought and sold across international borders each year and exploited through forced labor or commercial sex exploitation. Potentially millions more are trafficked internally within the borders of countries.

Big Box Stores: Their Impacts On The Economy And Tips For Competing, Sean Golden, Noel Jeutang, Ratikanta Pattaik, David I. Rosenbaum, Eric Thompson Jun 2006

Big Box Stores: Their Impacts On The Economy And Tips For Competing, Sean Golden, Noel Jeutang, Ratikanta Pattaik, David I. Rosenbaum, Eric Thompson

Rural Initiative Program: Publications and Reports

This is a study in three parts: the general impact of Wal-Mart and big box stores on the economy; an empirical look at Wal-Mart’s impacts on 15 Nebraska communities; and a review of research on ways that local retailers can compete against big box stores.

Part one suggests that Wal-Mart has both positive and negative impacts on the economy. Wal-Mart helps increase productivity and causes consumer prices to fall. Further, a number of studies found that employment increased in communities that received a new Wal-Mart store. However, other studies found that entry of a Wal-Mart failed to lead to net …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2005-2006, Bruce B. Johnson, Ben Blomendahl, Kyle Overturf Jun 2006

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2005-2006, Bruce B. Johnson, Ben Blomendahl, Kyle Overturf

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Nebraska’s agricultural land values rose an average of 9.6 percent during the year ending February 1, 2006. This brought the state’s average all-land value to over $1,000 per acre and the total worth of agricultural real estate to more than $45 billion.

In the wake of a series of generally favorable income years for most of the state’s agricultural sector, land values have advanced rather sharply over the past three years – particularly in the eastern third of the state. The three eastern districts have experienced value increases of 40 percent or more since February 2003.

In contrast to these …

Scale Development And Construct Clarification Of Servant Leadership, John E. Barbuto, Daniel W. Wheeler Jun 2006

Scale Development And Construct Clarification Of Servant Leadership, John E. Barbuto, Daniel W. Wheeler

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This article presents an integrated construct of servant leadership derived from a review of the literature. Subscale items were developed to measure 11 potential dimensions of servant leadership: calling, listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, growth, and community building. Data from 80 leaders and 388 raters were used to test the internal consistency, confirm factor structure, and assess convergent, divergent, and predictive validity. Results produced five servant leadership factors—altruistic calling, emotional healing, persuasive mapping, wisdom, and organizational stewardship— with significant relations to transformational leadership, leader-member exchange, extra effort, satisfaction, and organizational effectiveness. Strong factor structures and good performance …

Don't Let Society Define Your True Happiness, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Kathleen Hall became one of the fortunate few. She lived a life filled with all the trappings of success: She had snagged a corner office in the tallest buildings in Atlanta and New York. She enjoyed marvelous vacations, wore fabulous clothes and had a beautiful family. Life is beautiful, right? One day, as she was following her same routine, she took the World Trade Center elevator up to her office. But this ride was different: Her chest was tight, she had trouble breathing, she thought she was having a heart attack. After escaping the elevator, she clung to the wall …

Experimenting With The Future Of American Literary Study, Andrew Jewell May 2006

Experimenting With The Future Of American Literary Study, Andrew Jewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

As digital Americanists, we are in the exciting but somewhat unfortunate position of having to give new ideas a try. Some of us will succeed and alter the paradigms of American literary scholarship; some of us will, like Lucius Sherman, one day look a little ridiculous. Though I think we can trust the value of some of our digital work, like making important but hard to find texts rigorously edited and fully accessible, we cannot finally predict which experiments will succeed and which will fail. As academics with tenure and review committees in our future, many of us do not …

The Teeter Totter Factor In Community Development, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel May 2006

The Teeter Totter Factor In Community Development, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

Think back to when you were on a playground as a child ... do you remember playing on a teeter totter? Ever try to find the balance point while the other person was on the opposite end? That took some skill! One slight move of the body by either you or your partner immediately set the board bouncing up and down. In Boomtown USA (2004), Jack Schultz uses the analogy of a teeter totter to illustrate his last key to big success in small towns. He describes it this way: It takes only a small shift one way or the …

Changes In Co-Survivorship Of Adult Children And Parents: Ju/'Hoansi Of Botswana In 1968 And 1988, Patricia Draper, Nancy Howell

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Our study addresses these issues in a sociological microcosm that makes questions about population aging particularly interesting. The group on whom we report are the Ju|'hoansi (!Kung) of western Ngamiland, part of the Kalahari Desert of Botswana. They constitute a noteworthy case for several reasons. Discussion of modernization and its impact on the lives of elderly in traditional society has focused most often on agricultural and peasant societies, rather than on economically simpler groups such as hunter gatherers1). Ju|'hoansi, though now living in permanent settlements, have a recent past of mobile hunting and gathering. Over the past sixty years, Ju|'hoansi …

An Interim Report Of The Viking Age Archaeofauna From Hrísheimar, Mývatn District, N Iceland, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris, Ramona Harrison, Konrad Smiarowski, Norie Manigault

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

The excavations at Hrísheimar in Mývatnssveit in N Iceland are producing a very large archaeofauna, which can now be dated through both radiocarbon and two major volcanic tephra layers (the Landnám tephra of ca AD 871 and the Veiðivötn 930 tephra). While much of the site has been destroyed by wind erosion, substantial midden deposits (which overly earlier structures in some cases) still remain along the NE edge of the site area. While excavation is ongoing and only a small portion of the very substantial archaeofauna has been analyzed so far, it may be useful to present an interim working …

2005 Nebraska Farm Business Data, Tina N. Barrett May 2006

2005 Nebraska Farm Business Data, Tina N. Barrett

Cornhusker Economics

Following a year of climbing fuel prices, tough crop prices and average yields, I really didn’t expect to be reporting record high net farm income for the State of Nebraska, but that’s the news I have to report. Net Farm Income for 2005 was $83,095, up 5 percent over last year’s record high income. I was really surprised as the averages were coming in, but it didn’t take long to understand where the numbers were coming from.
