Review Of Lethal Legacy: Current Native Controversies In Canada By J. R. Miller, Nathalie Kermoal Jan 2007

Review Of Lethal Legacy: Current Native Controversies In Canada By J. R. Miller, Nathalie Kermoal

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Apart from being from Western Canada, what do Louis Riel and Peter Lougheed have in common? According to J. R. Miller, the two have a shared heritage: both are Metis. Yet, in the eyes of Canadians, one is always identified as Metis while the other is not. This interesting parallel helps the author grapple with the complicated question of Native identity in the first chapter of Lethal Legacy: Current Native Controversies in Canada.

The reasons for writing a book with such a title are clearly indicated in the preface. Miller-professor of history and Canada Research Chair in Native-newcomer Relations at …

Review Of A Seat At The Table: Huston Smith In Conversation With Native Americans On Religious Freedom By Huston Smith, Michael D. Mcnally Jan 2007

Review Of A Seat At The Table: Huston Smith In Conversation With Native Americans On Religious Freedom By Huston Smith, Michael D. Mcnally

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

As Native American religious traditions have reached new visibility and vitality over the last forty years, it is clear that constitutionally protected religious liberty has not extended to Native American communities. This is no mere matter of a tragic past; it is of currency today as a human rights concern. Indeed, two landmark cases by which the Rehnquist Court shrank the reach of constitutional protection for religious minorities generally involved Peyote practices of the Native American Church and management of sacred sites on federal lands.

A Seat at the Table explores the wide range of these contemporary issues, from protection …

Review Of Going It Alone: Fargo Grapples With The Great Depression By David Danbom, Sean Taylor Jan 2007

Review Of Going It Alone: Fargo Grapples With The Great Depression By David Danbom, Sean Taylor

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Going It Alone provides an in-depth examination of Fargo, North Dakota, during the Great Depression. Danbom was drawn to this study by his interest in the city in which he has lived for thirty years and by the impact the Great Depression had on his parents, his mother in particular. She, along with many other people who lived through that decade, carried the habits and attitudes shaped by the Depression throughout her adult life. The author notes correctly that any event "powerful enough to mold one's life is worthy of careful attention."

Danbom begins his study by outlining a series …

Review Of Chasing The Rodeo: On Wild Rides And Big Dreams, Broken Hearts And Broken Bones, And One Man's Search For The West By W. K. Stratton, Wayne S. Wooden Jan 2007

Review Of Chasing The Rodeo: On Wild Rides And Big Dreams, Broken Hearts And Broken Bones, And One Man's Search For The West By W. K. Stratton, Wayne S. Wooden

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Chasing the Rodeo involves one man's year-long search for himself, his father, and both the rodeo of his childhood past (during the classical period of the 1950s) and of today.

W. K. Stratton skillfully weaves what might look like disparate themes into a riveting, coherent book of introspection and renewal. In part, the book focuses on his personal chase to explore the ways of a shiftless father who left the family in the author's childhood to follow dreams of booze, bulls, and bucks. In part, it is a story of the author at midlife coming to terms with this haunt …

Crazy Horse: The Strange Man Of The Oglalas By Marl Sandoz Historiography, A Philosophy For Reconstruction, Mary Dixon Jan 2007

Crazy Horse: The Strange Man Of The Oglalas By Marl Sandoz Historiography, A Philosophy For Reconstruction, Mary Dixon

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

HISTORIOGRAPHY: MYTH FOR ENLIGHTENMENT

Noted historians Will and Ariel Durant have outlined the importance of knowing, understanding, and celebrating history as a valuable heritage. They call historiography "an industry, an art, and a philosophy-an industry by ferreting out the facts, an art by establishing a meaningful order in the chaos of the materials, a philosophy by seeking perspective and enlightenment." A true evaluation of the history of the American West is an important consideration for Americans, because as the Durants claim, there is much to gain from a proper understanding of it. In order to gain perspective and enlightenment from …

The Art Of Open Spaces Contemporary Sea And Prairiescapes, Elizabeth Schultz Jan 2007

The Art Of Open Spaces Contemporary Sea And Prairiescapes, Elizabeth Schultz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Once part of a great inland sea, Kansas and other Great Plains states have been landlocked for millennia. Yet the prairies' "grassy waves" and "islands of cottonwoods" continue to evoke these ancient waters. Diane Quantic in The Nature of the Place: A Study of Great Plains Fiction points out that "[ilt is a rare plains writer who does not invoke the image of the sea of grass, and a rare critic or observer [of the plains] who does not comment upon [this image's] ubiquity." In his index for The Great Prairie Fact and Literary Imagination, under "Prairie, likened to ocean," …

Review Of Buffalo Nation: American Indian Efforts To Restore The Bison., James H. Shaw Jan 2007

Review Of Buffalo Nation: American Indian Efforts To Restore The Bison., James H. Shaw

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Ken Zontek presents a thoroughly researched and generally well-written account of the underappreciated role played by American Indians in the conservation and restoration of American bison. He notes that of the five foundation herds that in the. 1870s became the principal gene pool for today's Plains bison, three of them were established by people of American Indian descent.

Grassland Establishment For Wildlife Conservation, D. Todd Jones-Farrand, Loren W. Burger Jr., Douglas H. Johnson, Mark R. Ryan Jan 2007

Grassland Establishment For Wildlife Conservation, D. Todd Jones-Farrand, Loren W. Burger Jr., Douglas H. Johnson, Mark R. Ryan

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Establishing grasslands has important implications for wildlife, especially in areas historically rich in grasslands that have since been converted to row crop agriculture. Most grasslands established under farm conservation programs have replaced annual crops with perennial cover that provides year-round resources for wildlife. This change in land use has had a huge influence on grassland bird populations; little is known about its impacts on other terrestrial wildlife species. Wildlife response to grassland establishment is a multi-scale phenomenon dependent upon vegetation structure and composition within the planting, practice-level factors such as size and shape of the field, and its landscape context, …

Interleukin-6 And Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Values In Elk Neonates, Shannon M. Barber-Meyer, Craig R. Johnson, Michael P. Murtaugh, L. David Mech, P. J. White Jan 2007

Interleukin-6 And Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Values In Elk Neonates, Shannon M. Barber-Meyer, Craig R. Johnson, Michael P. Murtaugh, L. David Mech, P. J. White

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Serological indicators of general condition would be helpful for monitoring or assessing ungulate wildlife. Toward that end, we report the 1st reference values for 2 cytokines, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), in neonatal elk (Cervus elaphus). We obtained blood samples from 140 calves ≤ 6 days old in Yellowstone National Park during summer 2003–2005. IL-6 values ranged from 0 to 1.21 pg/ml with a median of 0.03 pg/ml. TNF-α values ranged from 0 to 225.43 pg/ml with a median of 1.85 pg/ml. IL-6 and TNF-α concentrations were not significant predictors of elk calf survival through 21 …

Defining Space Use And Movements Of Canada Lynx With Global Positioning System Telemetry, Christopher Burdett, Ron Moen, Gerald J. Niemi, L. David Mech Jan 2007

Defining Space Use And Movements Of Canada Lynx With Global Positioning System Telemetry, Christopher Burdett, Ron Moen, Gerald J. Niemi, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Space use and movements of Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) are difficult to study with very-high-frequency radiocollars. We deployed global positioning system (GPS) collars on 11 lynx in Minnesota to study their seasonal space-use patterns. We estimated home ranges with minimum-convex-polygon and fixed-kernel methods and estimated core areas with area/probability curves. Fixed-kernel home ranges of males (range = 29–522 km2) were significantly larger than those of females (range = 5–95 km2) annually and during the denning season. Some male lynx increased movements during March, the month most influenced by breeding activity. Lynx core areas were …

A Proposed Ethogram Of Large-Carnivore Predatory Behavior, Exemplified By The Wolf, Daniel Macnulty, L. David Mech, Douglas Smith Jan 2007

A Proposed Ethogram Of Large-Carnivore Predatory Behavior, Exemplified By The Wolf, Daniel Macnulty, L. David Mech, Douglas Smith

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Although predatory behavior is traditionally described by a basic ethogram composed of 3 phases (search, pursue, and capture), behavioral studies of large terrestrial carnivores generally use the concept of a ‘‘hunt’’ to classify and measure foraging. This approach is problematic because there is no consensus on what behaviors constitute a hunt. We therefore examined how the basic ethogram could be used as a common framework for classifying large carnivore behavior. We used >2,150 h of observed wolf (Canis lupus) behavior in Yellowstone National Park, including 517 and 134 encounters with elk (Cervus elaphus) and American bison …

Cultural Identity And Continuity At The Missions Of New Spain: Examining The Native American Experience At The Spanish Missions Of Texas, William E. Altizer Jan 2007

Cultural Identity And Continuity At The Missions Of New Spain: Examining The Native American Experience At The Spanish Missions Of Texas, William E. Altizer

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Roman Catholic missions of New Spain were an essential component of the Spanish colonial enterprise, and the effects of the missionization process on the Native American populations of the Americas were profound. How did these native populations respond to the new imperatives of colonization and religious conversion? In what ways were they able to maintain their cultural identity under the mission system? This paper examines the ways in which archaeology can address these questions of cultural continuity, with particular emphasis on the eighteenth-century Spanish missions of San Antonio, Texas.

The Influence Of Refugee Status On Palestinian Identity And The Impact Of Identity On Durable Solutions To The Refugee Problem, Michaela S. Clemens Jan 2007

The Influence Of Refugee Status On Palestinian Identity And The Impact Of Identity On Durable Solutions To The Refugee Problem, Michaela S. Clemens

Nebraska Anthropologist

Over the last fifty years the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has generated massive numbers of refugees. The scale and longevity of the conflict has made the Palestinian refugee problem the most protracted and largest refugee situation in the world today (Merhab et al. 2006). The processes of becoming a refugee and living as a refugee have had direct impacts on the formation of Palestinian identity. In this paper, I examine the influence of refugee status on identity and discuss how this identity affects potential solutions to the protracted refugee situation. I offer a brief historical background to the creation of Palestinian refugees. …

Getting Your Hands A Little Less Dirty: An Exercise In Using Geophysics To Understand Hopewell Earthwork Construction, Erin C. Dempsey Jan 2007

Getting Your Hands A Little Less Dirty: An Exercise In Using Geophysics To Understand Hopewell Earthwork Construction, Erin C. Dempsey

Nebraska Anthropologist

Hopewellian earthworks are extremely complex in their make-up and indicate precise and planned soil placement by participants in the Hopewell culture. As such, recent research at the Hopeton Earthworks in Chillicothe, Ohio has focused on understanding how earthworks were constructed. Eight backhoe trenches excavated through the earthwork walls have revealed intricate and diverse soil stratigraphy. However, researchers do not yet know where the soils originated; this study aims to answer that question. To accomplish this, magnetic susceptibility testing was conducted on soil cores taken from in and around the earthworks. These results are compared to susceptibility testing results done on …

Archaeology In Palestine: The Life And Death Of Albert Glock, Katherine Lamie Jan 2007

Archaeology In Palestine: The Life And Death Of Albert Glock, Katherine Lamie

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper provides a critical examination of the dynamic connection between archaeological research and programs of political and religious agendas in Israel and Palestine. This examination contributes to recent discipline-wide discussions concerning the powerful impact of archaeological research in areas of political and religious turmoil. The first section of this paper notes the absence of an Islamic counterpart to Biblical archaeology. While there is no archaeology that attempts to prove literal interpretations of the Qur'an, the rather complex archaeology advanced by Albert Glock (1984; 1994; 1995) serves to meet the needs of marginalized Palestinian villagers. Yet Glock's experience with the …

Review Of Deer Of The Southwest: A Complete Guide To The Natural History, Biology, And Management Of Southwestern Mule Deer And White-Tailed Deer., Ruben Cantu Jan 2007

Review Of Deer Of The Southwest: A Complete Guide To The Natural History, Biology, And Management Of Southwestern Mule Deer And White-Tailed Deer., Ruben Cantu

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Very few books on the subject of deer in any particular region lend themselves to being complete. Jim Heffelfinger's book breaks the mold. It is by far the most comprehensive book on mule deer and white-tailed deer in the southwestern part of the United States, including Plains portions of Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico, I've ever read. Everything you ever wanted to know about these two deer species can be found in its pages, starting from the natural history and early evolution of deer into the New World, separation into two species, selection of habitat types by the two, general …

Review Of Indian Gaming And Tribal Sovereignty: The Casino Compromise., James V. Fenelon Jan 2007

Review Of Indian Gaming And Tribal Sovereignty: The Casino Compromise., James V. Fenelon

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This is an excellent book, with a couple of provisos. Considering the relative dearth of material on the relationship between tribal sovereignty and Indian gaming, the authors have probably the best work currently in print. Light and Rand take us through three major frameworks that clarify these complex relationships: federal Indian law and policy (their area of specialty); laws and constructions of Indian gaming and tribal sovereignty; and the associated politics of Indian gaming in a number of contexts. It is in their handling of the fourth framework, where they try to identify an "indigenous perspective," which either doesn't exist …

Review Of Farming And The Fate Of Wild Nature: Essays In Conservation- Based Agriculture., Judith Soule Jan 2007

Review Of Farming And The Fate Of Wild Nature: Essays In Conservation- Based Agriculture., Judith Soule

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The editors of this collection set out to "provide the scientific, philosophical, economic, and cultural underpinnings for an emerging movement, conservation-based agriculture." With many well-recognized contributors (e.g., Berry, Leopold, Kingsolver, Bass, Pollan), the volume should appeal to readers of both conservation biology and sustainable farming. The book uses an accessible journalistic or essayist rather than a scientific referenced style, though several selections provide clear syntheses of scientific findings (e.g., "Context Matters" by Reed Noss and 'The Role of Top Carnivores" by John Terborgh et al.). Wide variation in styles and topics tends to distract from the cohesion within sections. I …

Review Of Plant Breeding: The Arnel R. Hallauer International Symposium., Jianming Yu Jan 2007

Review Of Plant Breeding: The Arnel R. Hallauer International Symposium., Jianming Yu

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book is a compilation of papers presented at The Arnel R. Hallauer international Symposium on Plant Breeding in Mexico City on August 17-22, 2003. As the title indicates, the symposium was held to honor Dr. Arnel Hallauer, a great plant breeder, scientist, and teacher. The book discusses the past and present status of plant breeding worldwide and presents various perspectives about the future of this life-altering discipline. In 27 chapters, it documents the history, accomplishments, and challenges of plant breeding as a discipline as well as its methods in many different crop species.

Review Of Dakota Flora: A Seasonal Sampler, James H. Locklear Jan 2007

Review Of Dakota Flora: A Seasonal Sampler, James H. Locklear

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

There are few books on the plants of the Great Plains, and most of these are too technical to appeal to average readers, even those interested in natural history. Thankfully, this situation has changed with the arrival of David J. Ode's Dakota Flora: A Seasonal Sampler.

Review Of Being Lakota: Identity And Tradition On Pine Ridge Reservation., Paula L. Wagoner Jan 2007

Review Of Being Lakota: Identity And Tradition On Pine Ridge Reservation., Paula L. Wagoner

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Identity everywhere is complicated, but, in my experience, nowhere as complicated as on the contemporary Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This book is about one family "down East" in the small town of Allen, South Dakota, just over the Bennett County line. Petrillo does not seek to give an exhaustive picture of identity on Pine Ridge, focusing instead primarily on one married couple, Melda and Lupe Trejo and their narrative of their life together. Their lives are not necessarily emblematic of all the residents of Pine Ridge, but illustrate the ways in which personal, family, and religious identities are intertwined, flexible, …

Prairie Sandreed Response To Preceding-Year Defoliation And Precipitation Regime, Patrick E. Reece, Justin W. Morris, Walter H. Schacht, Ann E. Koehler, Jerry D. Vole Sky, Lowell E. Moser Jan 2007

Prairie Sandreed Response To Preceding-Year Defoliation And Precipitation Regime, Patrick E. Reece, Justin W. Morris, Walter H. Schacht, Ann E. Koehler, Jerry D. Vole Sky, Lowell E. Moser

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Knowledge of how current-year grazing and drought stress affect subsequent-year herbage production is needed to enhance the management of semiarid Sandhills prairies. This study quantifies subsequent- year effects of defoliation and precipitation on prairie sandreed (Calamovilfa longijolia), a high-seral, warm-season tallgrass, and total graminoid herbage production in the Nebraska Sandhills. Mainplots (9.0 m2) received either ambient precipitation (noncovered) or precipitation was excluded during April-May, June-July, or August-September, resulting in 66% to 135% of the long-term average (434 mm) precipitation. All species in 1.0 m2 defoliated subplots were clipped in early July at the stubble height required for 30%, …

Review If Agates: Treasures Of The Earth, Frances V. Belohlavy

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

All of us have at one time or another picked up a "pretty" rock whether from a parking lot or on a field trip, without always recognizing the beauty that can be brought out when the rock is cut and polished.Agates: Treasures of the Earth gives us a revelatory look at this group of dazzling stones.

Review Of Lethal Injection: Capital Punishment In Texas During The Modern Era, Nicole Casarez Jan 2007

Review Of Lethal Injection: Capital Punishment In Texas During The Modern Era, Nicole Casarez

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Texas has a notorious reputation as the death-penalty capital of America. The sheer number of Texas executions since 1976 has created a statistical pool that Jon Sorenson and Rochy Pilgrim use in Lethal Injection to address four major factual (as opposed to moral) issues surrounding the death penalty: (1) Does it deter would-be murderers from killing? (2) Does it prevent probable future acts of violence by those sentenced to death? (3) Is it applied to the most deserving defendants? (4) Is it imposed fairly and cost-effectively? These are certainly the right questions, and, for the most part, the authors do …

Review Of The Nature Of Eastern North Dakota: Pre-1880 Historical Ecology, Dennis H. Knight Jan 2007

Review Of The Nature Of Eastern North Dakota: Pre-1880 Historical Ecology, Dennis H. Knight

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Biologists, anthropologists, and land managers have at least two primary reasons for digging deeply into the journals of early explorers and inhabitants of an area. One is pure enjoyment, the kind that comes with learning from firsthand observers about the environment, people, flora, and fauna that existed over a century ago. Another is coming to a better understanding of the development of the ecosystems on which we now depend, and thereby gaining insights into how to achieve the elusive goal of sustainable land management while protecting the biological diversity that remains. Accessing this information is taxing, occurring as it does …

Native Land Acquisition In The Minnesota River Valley, Laura J. Smith Jan 2007

Native Land Acquisition In The Minnesota River Valley, Laura J. Smith

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The economic issues that often arise from Native land acquisition and development can strain relationships between American Indian tribes and non-Indian local governments. As Indian tribes expand their landholdings, political and economic landscapes are transformed. This paper examines intergovernmental relationships and the characteristics and impacts of recent land acquisitions made by two Dakota Indian communities in the Minnesota River Valley of Minnesota. The Upper Sioux Community has enjoyed a level of cooperation from local communities in their rural land acquisitions, while the Shakopee Mdewakanton Dakota Community has experienced vigorous opposition to their urban land acquisitions. Geographic situation may help to …

The Shop-Locally Discourse In Jefferson County Kansas, Gina K. Thornburg Jan 2007

The Shop-Locally Discourse In Jefferson County Kansas, Gina K. Thornburg

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Inhabitants in the villages of Jefferson County, Kansas, respond to socioeconomic changes in a variety of ways. Empirical research conducted in 2004 revealed multiple discourses that constituted such responses. The shop-locally discourse emerged in structured interviews, newspaper articles, and newspaper advertisements as an emblem of socioeconomic empowerment. Discourse was analyzed within its context and interpreted to provide some insight into residents' responses to change. The discourse revealed not only nostalgia for formerly vibrant commercial districts but also the importance of economic vitality to social life. Shopping locally today, however, will not restore yesteryear's social milieu. The proximity of midsize cities …
