Thomas Pynchon: A Brief Chronology, Paul Royster

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

A chronology of known facts concerning the life and writings of American writer Thomas Pynchon, author of the novels V., The Crying of Lot 49, Gravity’s Rainbow, Vineland, and Mason & Dixon. It covers the years 1937 through 2006, and is presented in lieu of a biography, since very little is known concerning his personal life. Special attention is paid to published works and professional relationships, and to ascertaining exact and consistent dates of publications, awards, events, and appearances.

The information in this brief chronology was compiled from published sources, including The New York Times …

Comparison Of Returns For Cash Or Crop Share Rentals, H. Douglas Jose Jun 2005

Comparison Of Returns For Cash Or Crop Share Rentals, H. Douglas Jose

Cornhusker Economics

The popularity of cash leases as opposed to crop share leases has increased in recent years. Historically, crop share leases have predominated, but it is estimated that about half of the cropland leases in Nebraska are now cash leases and half are crop share. There are a number of reasons for this trend. With the competition for land, cash leases establish a specific rental rate which can easily be negotiated or bidup. The equivalent cash for a crop share situation cannot be determined until after harvest when the yield and market price of the crop are known. The land owners …

Whose Money Is It Anyway?, Jeffrey S. Royer Jun 2005

Whose Money Is It Anyway?, Jeffrey S. Royer

Cornhusker Economics

Substantial reductions in personal income tax rates and an elimination of the estate tax have been major priorities for the current presidential administration. When arguing for tax cuts, George W. Bush has frequently told Americans that “It’s your money.” According to Princeton University ethicist Peter Singer, “His message was that when governments tax their subjects, they take money that belongs to the taxpayers and spend it—instead of letting the taxpayers decide for themselves how they want to spend it” (Singer 2004, p. 11). Singer thinks most Americans believe taxes are their money. As he puts it, “Of course it was …

Moral Development Study In The 21st Century: Introduction To Moral Motivation Through The Life Span: Nebraska Symposium On Motivation, Volume 51, Carolyn P. Edwards, Gustavo Carlo Jun 2005

Moral Development Study In The 21st Century: Introduction To Moral Motivation Through The Life Span: Nebraska Symposium On Motivation, Volume 51, Carolyn P. Edwards, Gustavo Carlo

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Questions of right and wrong, good and bad, lawful and unlawful, have been debated by philosophers, theologians, scholars, and ordinary people since ancient times. The moral domain represents humanity’s answers to three questions: What is the right thing to do? How is the best state of affairs achieved? What qualities make for a good person? However, the scientific investigation of the moral life has a much shorter intellectual history than does philosophical and religious reflection; nevertheless, it is not new. Moral development theory and research emerged as a critical topic over 100 years ago, at the beginning of the 20th …

1031 Tax Exchanges And Nebraska’S Farm Real Estate Market, Bruce B. Johnson, Aaron Raymond Jun 2005

1031 Tax Exchanges And Nebraska’S Farm Real Estate Market, Bruce B. Johnson, Aaron Raymond

Cornhusker Economics

“The 1031's are giving us a distorted value of farmland.” The above quote from a Southeastern Nebraska reporter to this department’s 2005 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Survey, to be released July 1, reflects many of the comments made by reporters from across the state. The 1031 exchanges appear to be increasingly influential in local agricultural land markets from Chadron to Falls City. This year, for the first time in the series of monitoring factors influencing the value of agricultural land, the categories of non-farm investors and 1031 Tax Exchanges were ranked by our survey respondents as the two most influential …

A Protocol For The Staining Of Cement Lines In Adult Human Bone Using Toluidine Blue, Daniel L. Osborne, Janene Curtis Jun 2005

A Protocol For The Staining Of Cement Lines In Adult Human Bone Using Toluidine Blue, Daniel L. Osborne, Janene Curtis

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Increased definition of cement lines aids in the identification of secondary osteons in bone. A staining protocol taken from Burr (Anat Rec 232:180-189, 1991) and modified by Havill using toluidine blue on plastic-embedded bone specimens was applied to cranial core and femoral shaft sections but proved to be too time-consuming and inconsistent. Experimentation resulted in a different protocol for each bone type, perhaps as the result of differences in section thickness and cortical area. Staining of femoral sections proved particularly difficult, with increased etching duration and agitation proving most influential in intensity and uniformity of stain.

Evaluation And Perceived Impacts Of The North-Central Region Sare Grants, 1988-2002, Shirley K. Trout, Charles A. Francis, John E. Barbuto Jr.

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Evaluation of government-funded programs is essential to identify ways in which initial funding makes an impact and programs can improve. The purpose of this study was to understand the value of the North Central Region's Sustainable Agricultural Research and Education (SARE) grants operated through the United States Department of Agriculture, from their inception through 2002. Using both quantitative and qualitative data, impacts were explored from the perspective of former grant recipients. Survey data were collected from 171 former SARE and 33 interviews conducted with grant recipients who represented three different grant "families"--researchers, producers and educators. Descriptive, comparative, and exploratory analyses …

Are They Ready To Make The Switch? Results Of The Wsu Libraries Survey On Electronic And Print Collections, Cathy Moore-Jansen, Judith A. Wolfe

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

A recent survey of Wichita State University faculty, staff, and students by the WSU Libraries shows the university community far from consensus on the issue of print versus electronic journals and other resources. The survey, made available to the entire campus via the Web, provides an in-depth look at the importance of materials in different formats, how print and electronic journals are located and used, the interest in alternative delivery methods, and the level of support for canceling subscriptions or buying fewer books to maintain or add electronic access. The responses from 381 users have been analyzed using statistical software …

Gender, Social Bonds, And Delinquency: A Comparison Of Boys’ And Girls’ Models, Julia Mcquillan, Terceira A. Berdahl, Constance L. Chapple Jun 2005

Gender, Social Bonds, And Delinquency: A Comparison Of Boys’ And Girls’ Models, Julia Mcquillan, Terceira A. Berdahl, Constance L. Chapple

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Past research has assessed gender differences in delinquency due to differential social controls, yet important questions remain regarding gender and social bonding. As much of this work was premised on Hirschi’s measurement of the social bond, we examine whether gender moderates two parts of the social bond: the measurement of the social bond and structural differences between the social bond and delinquency. Using multiple-group structural equation modeling, we find that neither the measures of the social bond nor their relationships with property crime are gender-specific. The structural relationship between the elements of the social bond and violent delinquency differs slightly …

Three Potentially Effective Approaches To Community Change, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel May 2005

Three Potentially Effective Approaches To Community Change, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

Communities change all the time .... businesses come and go, streets and other infrastructure are improved and schools grow or constrict depending upon their enrollment. Even with the wide range of changes in our communities, research shows that there are really only three commonly used approaches to implement change. They include the: 1) self-help; 2) technical assistance; and 3) conflict approach.

The Communication Studies Researcher And The Communication Studies Indexes, David C. Tyler, Signe Swanson, Susan M. Leach

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The existence of widely available large, multi-subject, online databases calls into question the necessity for small, discipline-specific indexes to support research. This study attempts to determine whether the online Communication Studies indexes provide access to the journal literature that researchers in the field actually cite and whether, where the current journal literature is concerned, that access is in any way superior to that provided by large, multi-subject, online indexes.

A Fishing Farm In The West Fjords Of Iceland: A Preliminary Report Of The Archaeofauna From Gjögur, Yekaterina Krivogorskaya, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas H. Mcgovern

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

The date for the onset of full scale commercial fisheries in Iceland remains somewhat controversial, but thus far the earliest radiocarbon dated seasonal fishing station (11th- 13th century) is in NW Iceland’s Strandasýsla County at Akurvík. This paper presents a preliminary report of the ongoing analysis of the large archaeofauna from the farm mound at Gjögur, 3 km from Akurvík, places the site of Gjögur in the wider context of the NW region of Iceland by comparing the site with the Akurvík archaeofauna, and outlines new methodologies of reconstructing live fish size and age based on recovered fish bones. Although …

K-Means Clustering With Multiresolution Peak Detection, Guanshan Yu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Alan B. Bond May 2005

K-Means Clustering With Multiresolution Peak Detection, Guanshan Yu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Alan B. Bond

Avian Cognition Papers

Clustering is a practical data mining approach of pattern detection. Because of the sensitivity of initial conditions, k-means clustering often suffers from low clustering performance. We present a procedure to refine initial conditions of k-means clustering by analyzing density distributions of a data set before estimating the number of clusters k necessary for the data set, as well as the positions of the initial centroids of the clusters. We demonstrate that this approach indeed improves the accuracy and performance of k-means clustering measured by average intra to interclustering error ratio. This method is applied to the virtual ecology project to …

Are Political Orientations Genetically Transmitted?, John R. Alford, Carolyn L. Funk, John R. Hibbing May 2005

Are Political Orientations Genetically Transmitted?, John R. Alford, Carolyn L. Funk, John R. Hibbing

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

We test the possibility that political attitudes and behaviors are the result of both environmental and genetic factors. Employing standard methodological approaches in behavioral genetics—–specifically, comparisons of the differential correlations of the attitudes of monozygotic twins and dizygotic twins—–we analyze data drawn from a large sample of twins in the United States, supplemented with findings from twins in Australia. The results indicate that genetics plays an important role in shaping political attitudes and ideologies but a more modest role in forming party identification; as such, they call for finer distinctions in theorizing about the sources of political attitudes. We conclude …

Collaboration As A Foundation For The Project Approach In Family Child Care, Joan Youngquist, Carolyn P. Edwards, Ruth Heaton

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Supporting children's curiosity was considered important at my family child care home. How could we best achieve this? As my assistant caregiver Deb and 1 attended professional development workshops, we began to wonder if the project approach (Helm & Katz 2001) would be an effective means of supporting inquiry and collaborative learning. Before we would commit ourselves, we wanted to learn more. We had many questions. Just what is the project approach? What does it look like? How will it support children's learning? What do we need to be successful with it? The literature suggested many examples of successful projects …

Supreme Court Rules Against Attempt To Beat County Zoning Deadline, J. David Aiken Apr 2005

Supreme Court Rules Against Attempt To Beat County Zoning Deadline, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

One of the most misunderstood concepts in zoning law is that of non-conforming uses, or “grandfathering.” Most zoning regulations exempt existing uses that would not conform to the new (or revised) zoning regulation. These uses (land uses or buildings) are called non-conforming uses because they do not conform to the new (or revised) zoning regulation. The often mistaken belief is that zoning regulations must leave non-conforming uses alone. This is incorrect: Neb.Rev.Stat. § 23-173.01 allows non-conforming uses to be terminated, continued or regulated by a county zoning regulation. As a practical matter, however, most counties will not regulate or terminate …
