Patterns Of Variation In Deciduous Second And Permanent First Molars Among Chimpanzee Taxa, Livia A. Taylor

This project aims to expand our understanding of the utility of molar outline morphology in discriminating between primate taxa as well as to determine whether there is a significant advantage to using deciduous second molars (dm2) over permanent first molars (M1). Recent research in paleontology and paleoanthropology have demonstrated the usefulness of Elliptical Fourier Analysis of molar crown outlines in distinguishing between closely related animal taxa, including hominins, mice, and pigs. I apply this methodology to three Pan taxa: Pan paniscus, Pan troglodytes troglodytes, and Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii to determine how well biological distance information gleaned from molar outline analysis …

Procedures used for defining coffee quality include a variety of activities ranging from physical measurements, hedonic sensory evaluations, and valuation of recognized extrinsic attributes. The physical measurements of coffee quality evaluate intrinsic attributes through a set of formal coffee grading and analysis standards, in addition to human sensory activities which conduct formal cupping protocol standards and formal tasting competitions. Extrinsic qualities include attributes such as branding and aesthetics, in addition to sets of ethical qualities established to further differentiate value beyond intrinsic and hedonic qualities. The promotion and standardization of coffee quality expectations directly impact activities taken by coffee producers. …

Dressing The Part: Clothing And Gender Identity On The Frontier Artifacts From Steamboat Bertrand, Kami Ahrens

This study re-examines established views on gender divisions in the nineteenth century and further investigates the relationship between identity construction and material culture, with an emphasis on clothing. Using artifacts from the Steamboat Bertrand collection as a case study, the project explores the maintenance and performance of Victorian gender ideals in Montana mining communities. Steamboat Bertrand sank in 1865 on its maiden journey to Fort Benton, Montana, carrying a variety of goods for commercial sale, as well as the personal goods of passengers aboard the ship. The artifacts excavated from the ship provide a unique examination into the lives of …
