Exploring Faculty Consideration Of Instructional Resource Cost To Students, Christine N. Turner, Sarah Fitzgerald, Anne Graham

This study investigated how instructors consider resource cost and availability to students when selecting reading and viewing assignments. It employs a critical incident technique method, asking instructors to consider one course syllabus when considering their assignment practices. Findings address differences across formats including books, chapters, articles, and media. Most instructors never consulted library personnel regarding their reading and viewing assignments. Social and behavioral science instructor responses demonstrated interest in course material cost to students. Humanities and fine art instructor responses also demonstrated interest in cost and familiarity with library services. In this presentation I share the results of my deep-dive into the worlds of online teaching pedagogy, technology for accessible and active online learning, and best practices for teaching with digitized primary sources; my technology selections, for DIY (at home) creation of accessible videos and screencasts, questionnaires, and interactive spaces; and focus on my final product, a hyperlinked (hyperdoc) playlist style asynchronous lesson plan, with diverse information presentation modes, interactive activities, and some student choice. This lightning talk offers an example of combining active learning exercises to achieve multiple learning outcomes (some simple, such as resource identification, and some more complex, such as understanding archival silences and power dynamics in research access). The class was in Special Collections, but the active learning exercises – one a version of “speed-dating,” and the other a version of exhibit or bibliography curation – could easily be used in a more general library information literacy class. Creating A Sustainable Workflow For Converting Online Finding Aids Into Marc Records, Ann Kardos

Data regarding library collections exists in many locations. While this often works for those researchers who know what they're looking for, one institution created a plan to convert online finding aids into MARC records for the discovery layer. The project makes additional avenues to discover unique collections but also gives opportunities to create Library of Congress name authority records for distinct entities or hidden individuals and groups. This project became a model for standardization of this work across the consortium, and brought together stakeholders from metadata, special collections, archives, digital collections and library IT.

UMass Amherst (UMA) has chosen to invest in myriad models of open content, systems and advocacy organizations for well over a decade. What at first was an experimental approach has become more values-based, considered and collaborative. Consistent with its strategic plan, the Libraries are intentionally allocating and tracking part of their acquisitions budget to open scholarship. In an ecosystem of ever-increasing options, the social sciences and humanities (SSH) disciplines, monographs, and non-author processing charge (APC) funding are all under-represented in the open access market.
