The grand challenges of our day are being met with grand visions for the future. An opportunity sits at the intersection of climate change, open science, and community engagement. This talk speaks to what is distinctive about that opportunity in 2022, especially in light of the fresh directions in U.S. research policy, and offers a case study in what that might look like. Mr. Vandegrift speaks from experience and his recent research, and provides attendees with a foundation and a forecast.

Fostering Change: Evaluating Digital Scholarship For Professional Credit, Seth Denbo

As the field of digital humanities becomes an ever more important facet of both research and teaching, we need to find means for ensuring that the work is properly evaluated and that credit is given to the scholars who engage in it. The problems associated with developing this are complex, and new modes of research and publication have proven difficult to incorporate into disciplines that have traditionally put high value on print. Scholarly societies have an important role to play in encouraging creative thought and action about how best to accommodate these new modes within our disciplines.

This workshop will provide an introduction to the current state of funder mandates and the library resources available to you to facilitate meeting compliance requirements. Thea Atwood, the Libraries’ Data Specialist, will cover the requirements of the top funders (and provide methods to gain information on the requirements for other funding agencies), resources to help you write your data management plan, the benefit of adding a digital object identifier (DOI) to your work, and sharing your scholarly outputs with ScholarWorks – both publications and data.
