Academic Freedom And The Management Of Higher Education: An Administrative Perspective, Dennis S. Gouran
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines academic freedom from an administrative perspective, situating the concept within the management of higher education institutions. Through reflective analysis of illustrative incidents, the discussion identifies external and internal pressures that threaten faculty autonomy, including political intervention, student complaints, and collegial disputes. It outlines administrative challenges in balancing protection of scholarly inquiry with responsibility for instructional quality, grading equity, and curricular relevance. The article classifies problems linked to preserving academic freedom, such as responding to legal or parental demands, and those arising from its exercise, such as unreasonable course standards or ambiguous disciplinary boundaries. Administrative Support For Paid Media Consulting In Journalism Education, David C. Couison
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article investigates administrative support for paid media consulting within journalism education, situating consulting in the broader context of faculty professional development and institutional governance. Employing a national survey of heads of journalism and mass communication programs, the study maps policy provisions, administrative attitudes, and the prevalence of consulting among tenure track educators across public and private universities. Descriptive and inferential analyses reveal that most administrators view consulting as beneficial, actively encourage it, and implement policies emphasizing prior approval and disclosure, yet supportive policies do not necessarily increase consulting rates. Consulting is most common among senior, tenured professors, and more …

Perspectives On Academic Advising For Pre-Law Students; Views From Law Schools And The Speech/Communication Discipline, Ronald J. Matlon
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article surveys undergraduate advisors in speech communication programs and law school admissions officers to assess perceptions of speech communication as preparation for law study. Comparative analysis of national questionnaire data explores consensus on desirable lawyer competencies, undergraduate skill development, and the suitability of specific communication courses such as argumentation, persuasion, and interpersonal communication. Findings show broad agreement that oral advocacy and critical reasoning underpin legal practice, yet admissions officers frequently question the rigor and depth of the speech communication major, perceiving applicants from it at a modest disadvantage. Advisors consider the discipline a liberal arts pathway that cultivates analytical …

A Case For Exclusive Sections Of The Basic Oral Communication Course: International Esl Students, Robert C. Dick
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article argues that assigning exclusive sections of the foundational oral communication course to international students using English as a second language fosters stronger participation, language proficiency, and academic integration. Drawing on national enrollment reports, classroom discourse research, and questionnaire evidence from ESL enrollees, the discussion compares exclusive and mixed section formats, highlighting how language anxiety, cultural turn taking norms, and instructor calling patterns limit involvement when learners are mainstreamed. Exclusive grouping, the analysis shows, increases peer supported negotiation of meaning, expands speaking time, and enables instructors to tailor interactive tasks in public speaking, interviewing, discussion, and debate that accelerate …

Academic Freedom And The First Amendment: Legal Entanglements, J. Louis Campbell Iii
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article traces the historical evolution of academic freedom, then interrogates its constitutional moorings within First Amendment jurisprudence. Through doctrinal analysis of landmark Supreme Court opinions from Adler to Keyishian, the discussion contrasts professional and constitutional definitions of academic freedom, identifying tensions between individual scholarly liberty and institutional autonomy. Case law on intramural speech, corporate academic freedom, and professional liability illustrates how courts balance educator expression against administrative interests. The article further examines challenges posed by educational malpractice claims, tenure disputes, and liability insurance, situating these developments within governance debates in higher education. By synthesizing legal scholarship, court decisions, and …
Academic Freedom In The Speech Communication Classroom: Toward An Ethics For Teaching, Christopher Lyle Johnstone
Academic Freedom In The Speech Communication Classroom: Toward An Ethics For Teaching, Christopher Lyle Johnstone
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reconceptualizes academic freedom within speech communication pedagogy, claiming that authentic freedom rests less on external constraints and more on internal dispositions of growth and intellectual adventure shaped by Deweyan philosophy. Through theoretical analysis and reflective classroom observation, it traces how these attitudes inform learning objectives, curriculum content, and interactive teaching strategies in the basic public speaking course. The discussion situates communicative competence, rhetorical education, and student inquiry within an ethical framework that obliges instructors to cultivate questioning, uncertainty tolerance, and flexible adaptation while continually renewing their own practice. By linking academic governance, classroom ethics, and performance oriented instruction, …

Academic Freedom And Scholarly Journals In Speech Communication: An Editor's Perspective, Thomas W. Benson
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article interrogates the relationship between academic freedom and editorial decision making in speech communication journals, situating the debate within the historical framework of the 1940 AAUP statement. Through reflective analysis of submission protocols, referee correspondence, and controversial exemplars, the discussion reveals how gatekeeping practices, including methodological orthodoxy, political sensitivity, and implicit sexism, can constrain intellectual diversity before administrative sanctions ever arise. The narrative contrasts narrow procedural definitions of freedom with a broader ethical vision that champions pluralism, feminist perspectives, and ecumenical methods. By outlining concrete guidelines for editor selection, board composition, and review transparency, the work underscores the responsibility …

Utilizing Undergraduates As Teaching Assistants In The Basic Communication Course: A Model, Roseanna G. Ross
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article proposes a systematic model for employing undergraduate teaching assistants in a basic communication course within a speech communication department lacking graduate programs. Through reflective program documentation and instructional communication analysis, the study outlines institutional rationale, selection criteria, training procedures, classroom responsibilities, and evaluation practices that position the assistant as a collaborative facilitator of experiential learning activities in public speaking, interpersonal communication, and group discussion units. By comparing perceived benefits and constraints for students, assistants, and instructors, the model demonstrates how undergraduate assistants enhance formative feedback, increase speaking opportunities, and support personalized pedagogy while fostering their own professional socialization. …
