Adult Attachment Patterns, Ethnic Experience, And Social Competence; Comparing African American And Caucasian College Students, Melissa Robin May 2013

Adult Attachment Patterns, Ethnic Experience, And Social Competence; Comparing African American And Caucasian College Students, Melissa Robin

HIM 1990-2015

The purpose of this thesis was to examine adult attachment patterns and ethnic experience and the relationship on social competence. There are limited studies that have examined the differences among racially and ethnically diverse populations. A total of 60 university undergraduate students completed the Relationship Questionnaire, Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire, Measure of Adolescent Hetersocial Competence, and the Scale of Ethnic Experience. Results showed that some differences existed between the two groups in terms of attachment patterns. Ethnic identity was related to social competence with both groups. It is suggested that ethnic experience may be useful for studying social competence.

Examination Of The Relationship Between Sport Concussion And Long Term Neurodegenerative And Psychological Disorders: A Literature Review, Vivian Rivera

HIM 1990-2015

Background: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1.6 to 3.8 million Americans suffer a sports related concussion each year. Concussion is defined as a transient alteration of the brain structure caused by a direct or indirect force. During the last decade, a vast amount of clinical research on the long term effects of repetitive head trauma has occurred, especially on the subject of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), depression and dementia. Objective: The purpose of this literature review is to examine the literature pertaining to multiple concussion and the long-term effects of multiple concussion such as neurodegenerative …

Explaning The Effects Of Unionization On Unemployment At The State Level, Matthew Robin May 2013

Explaning The Effects Of Unionization On Unemployment At The State Level, Matthew Robin

HIM 1990-2015

Many researchers have attempted to find a concrete link between unionization and unemployment. I use panel data regression and simultaneous equation regressions to determine the relationship between unionization and unemployment. Regressions were run on equations which featured private sector and public sector unionization. A separate regression featured public sector unionization but replaced private sector unionization with unionization in the construction industry and manufacturing industry. In all sets of the equation, the unionization variable was also accompanied by a corresponding location quotient, which measures industrial concentration. Both sets of equations also contain and interaction term which test the interaction between unionization …

Exploring The Linguistic Styles Of Students With A Propensity For Alcoholism And Students With Symptoms Of Depression, Sarah Sanders May 2013

Exploring The Linguistic Styles Of Students With A Propensity For Alcoholism And Students With Symptoms Of Depression, Sarah Sanders

HIM 1990-2015

The present study investigated whether participants with a high propensity for alcoholism demonstrate the same linguistic pattern previously established for depression in response to a personal essay. It was hypothesized that students with a higher propensity for alcoholism would display a similar linguistic style when compared to those with symptoms of depression; specifically students with a higher propensity for alcohol abuse or dependence would use more first person singular pronouns and less first person plural pronouns. They were also hypothesized to use more negative emotion words similar to those with symptoms of depression. Participants completed a writing exercise that was …

The Relationship Between Consumer Debt And Mental Health, Jennifer Simmons May 2013

The Relationship Between Consumer Debt And Mental Health, Jennifer Simmons

HIM 1990-2015

Consumer debt is a growing phenomenon in the US and throughout the world. The beginning of the 21st century has been defined by such an incredible growth in consumer debt that American families have increased their debt relative to personal income four times faster than in the 1990s. Since the Federal Reserve began measuring the amount of American consumer debt and consumer income in the 1980s, consumer debt never exceeded consumer income until 2004 when it reached 104.8% of income. In the last two decades, researchers have observed a significant correlation between debt and mental health. The purpose of this …

The Role Of Anxiety In Mental Tumbling Blocks, Shannon Thompson May 2013

The Role Of Anxiety In Mental Tumbling Blocks, Shannon Thompson

HIM 1990-2015

Mental tumbling blocks are a problem in sports such as cheerleading where the athlete has an unexplained fear related to performing a skill that has been previously executed successfully. The current study compared participants with and without a mental tumbling block on self-report measures of anxiety and on vocal analysis data indicating if anxiety or fear is present. Participants were female cheerleaders who ranged in age from 10 to 16 years old. The Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2; Smith, Smoll, Cumming & Grossbard, 2006) and the Cheerleading Fear Inventory (CFI; modified from Cartoni, Minganti, and Zelli, 2005) were used in addition …

Axis Of Identities: How Socially Constructed Perceptions Affect The Foreign Policy Of Nations, Roman Torres May 2013

Axis Of Identities: How Socially Constructed Perceptions Affect The Foreign Policy Of Nations, Roman Torres

HIM 1990-2015

Contrary to the assumptions of realist theory, this thesis suggests that reality is subjected to social constructions. The national discourse of one country constitutes the context from which societies will generate perceptions and ideas about another society. It is from these socially constructed ideas that states' interests are formed. States interests are what constitute the foreign policy of a country. Given that the United States is the world's hegemon, understanding the process by which countries' interests take shape and evolve will give the United States social awareness and strategic advantage to lead the world's current speedy integration with less volatile …

The Label Of Madness: The Effects Of Career Choice And Gender On Perceptions Of Mental Illness, Angela Vanella May 2013

The Label Of Madness: The Effects Of Career Choice And Gender On Perceptions Of Mental Illness, Angela Vanella

HIM 1990-2015

People with creative abilities have often been stereotyped as insane, neurotic, and prone to addiction (Kaufman, Bromley, & Cole, 2006; Corrigan, 2005). These labels have perpetuated the stigma for many generations (Ludwig, 1995). In addition, females have often been stereotyped as "bad at math," but are assumed to be more verbal and creative (Quinn & Spencer, 2001). The present study hypothesized that creative writers would be stereotyped as more mentally ill, neurotic, and addicted to substances compared to scientists. It was also predicted that gender would exacerbate the phenomenon such that females would be particularly vulnerable to this stereotype. Statistical …

The Transformation Of Our Workplaces How Gender Has Shaped Workplace Sexual Harassment Law And Award Amounts, Ian Waldick May 2013

The Transformation Of Our Workplaces How Gender Has Shaped Workplace Sexual Harassment Law And Award Amounts, Ian Waldick

HIM 1990-2015

Equal Employment Opportunity laws are a relatively new construct within the framework of American legal history. This area of law, however, has experienced significant development within a relatively short span of time. Over the last half-century, the Supreme Court of the United States has handed down several landmark decisions, clarifying the law as to what constitutes sexual harassment, and in which circumstances employers can be held liable for the harassing actions of employees. The purpose of this thesis is to examine this development, and to assess the question of whether the awards given to male victims of workplace sexual harassment …

Personality And Interpersonal Aspects Of The Work Environment, Roseann Swiden Wick May 2013

Personality And Interpersonal Aspects Of The Work Environment, Roseann Swiden Wick

HIM 1990-2015

Workplace arrogance has emerged as a research focus area for many industrial-organizational psychologists. Employees who demonstrate arrogance tend to demonstrate poor job performance, executive failure and poor overall organizational success. The present study investigates arrogance measured by the Workplace Arrogance Scale (WARS: Johnson et al., 2010) in relation to the Honesty Humility facet of the HEXACO Personality Index-Revised (HEXACO PI-R: LEE & Ashton, 2004). A total of 273 participants completed the WARS and HEXACO PI-R Honesty-Humility Facet of the HEXACO. Results show significant, strong negative correlations between the Honesty-Humility subfacets and the overall Honesty Humility facet score with the WARS …

Getting Help When Needed: Food Insecurity Among College Students And The Impact Of Food Pantry Availability, Jasmine Loftin May 2013

Getting Help When Needed: Food Insecurity Among College Students And The Impact Of Food Pantry Availability, Jasmine Loftin

HIM 1990-2015

Although studies on food insecurity among low-income families and children are prevalent, it's rare to come upon a study specifically measuring food insecurities among college students. There are limited accesses for students to government assistance such as food stamps because of their "dependency" on their parents. Although, on paper, the student may still be a dependent, there are a myriad of instances where they are unable to receive monetary help from their parents for different circumstances. My current study is examining an understudied population of college students who use the Knights Helping Knights pantry. The Knights Helping Knights pantry is …

Psychological Distress And Substance Use Among College Students, Katelynn Messer May 2013

Psychological Distress And Substance Use Among College Students, Katelynn Messer

HIM 1990-2015

Research indicates that young adults have relatively high rates of psychological distress and substance use. Research also suggests that psychological distress and substance use are correlated as individuals may turn to substance use as a coping mechanism for psychological distress. The goal of the current research is to examine the relationship between psychological distress and substance use among college students. A secondary question is to determine if the relationship between psychological distress and substance use is different for men and women. College students are a good sample for this research question for a number of reasons. First, more young adults …

An Examination Of The Influence Of Religiosity On Political Views Of The Millennial Generation, Kelsey Degenaro May 2013

An Examination Of The Influence Of Religiosity On Political Views Of The Millennial Generation, Kelsey Degenaro

HIM 1990-2015

The millennial generation is said to consist of all those born between the years of 1978 and 1996. The majority has come of age and has the ability to be active participants in the political community. For the past three elections they have been the democratic party biggest supporters. In the 2008 presidential election 68% of all Millennial voters voted for Barack Obama. Millennials are also reporting to be less religious and more spiritual. They are attending religious services less frequently and identify with religious denominations less often. Throughout American history, religion is known to have an effect on political …

Left In The Dark: University Of Central Florida Students' Perception Of Safety On Campus, Amber Krauss

HIM 1990-2015

The last few years a struggle of feeling safe has become more of an issue with all the tragedies that have taken place on college campuses throughout the years. Tragedies like Columbine then Virginia Tech and most recently the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Connecticut. This research focuses on student's perception of safety and the issues with violence on campus. The question is how the students, faculty, and staff will react if an incident like this occurs on the University of Central Florida campus. The intent of this thesis was to explore the student body of UCF students and their …

Does Knowledge Predict Fear: Prior Knowledge Of Mass School Shootings And Students Fear Of Crime On A College Campus, Emily Rosenbaum

HIM 1990-2015

On April 16, 2007, 32 students and faculty were killed on the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University campus, making this incident the deadliest mass school shooting in United States history. Other school shootings, such as the infamous Columbine High School shootings and the more recent Northern Illinois State shootings, have become popular topics in today's social media (Kaminski et al, 2010; Reese 2009). Due to these events, schools and universities have become interested in the safety of their students as well as the students overall feelings towards crime while on their campus. New research studies have taken an interest …

Sexuality Online: Exploration And Self-Identification Among College Students, Chelsea Nordham May 2013

Sexuality Online: Exploration And Self-Identification Among College Students, Chelsea Nordham

HIM 1990-2015

The Internet is a space that offers the exploration of sexual experiences without social repercussions to one's identity. As a de-centralized environment, social conventions, cues, judgments and risks may be present, but are not fixed. Online sexual activities are accessible through both interactive and observational means, such as forums, blogs, chat rooms, e-mail, instant messaging, video conferencing and websites. The current study sought to uncover the motivation and significance of Internet use on how college students perceive, experience and define their sexuality. The intent of this thesis was to look into the complexity of human sexuality that can be embodied …

The Offline Impact Of Cyberbullying, Kathleen Ortiz

HIM 1990-2015

Over the recent years, we have seen an immense increase in technology. Though the Internet can be convenient to students, it can also bear negative repercussions. Cyberbullying has impacted millions of people across the nation hindering them in many ways. The Bullying occurs through different outlets, from websites, emails to text messages. Victims cannot truly escape the matter because it follows them wherever they may go. The intent of this thesis was to see who the victims of cyberbullying are, what the aftermath effect is, and whether they notify an adult about their situation. Using data from the School Crime …

Young Athletes Must Learn To Balance Health, Challenges, Lisa Barkley

UCF Forum

We all want sports heroes and we all want to win – but that desire comes with a price. Just as there will always be winners in sports, there will always be injuries and losers. Often the lines are blurred between what is in the best interest of an athlete’s health and well-being and what it takes to win.

Today's College Degree Should Be As Accessible As A High School Diploma, Richard C. Crepeau

In his recent State of the Union message, President Obama mentioned the high cost of higher education. This is an issue that he raised a year ago at the same venue, and one that the vice president has been spearheading. For those of us who have been on a college campus for quite some time it is an issue of growing significance.

The Week That Was, Richard C. Crepeau

Some may regard this as one of the strangest weeks ever in Sportsworld. Certainly the less than forthcoming appearance by Lance Armstrong with Oprah had some surrealistic qualities. After years, or even decades, of denial, Armstrong told America’s mother-confessor that, yes, he had indulged in all sorts of performance enhancement techniques to win his record seven Tour de France crowns. The fact that he had taken PED’s surprised no one, but the fact that he did a TV confessional- “bless me Oprah for I have sinned”- surprised a lot of people both in and out of the cycling community.

In Attempt To Quell Violence, Don't Publicly Identify 'Mentally Disturbed', Carla Poindexter

UCF Forum

I am certainly not in a position to judge whether a student appears mentally disturbed or unstable in the sense that he or she might be a threat to society or to themselves. However, as a university-level educator who spends most of my working hours with young people in their late teens and early 20s, I have witnessed and experienced situations that were a cause for concern in which I felt compelled to act, intervene or respond in ways that we, as research professors, are often not trained to do. Although most of these situations have been resolved with a …

In my Florida neighborhood it was a quiet Saturday morning. In fact it was probably much the same across much of the United States. No one was in the streets celebrating. No one made comparisons to 1980 when the United States won the World Junior Hockey Championship in Ufa, a city of million or so in Central Russia.
