While The Enemy Is Preoccupied : A Distractionary Theory Of Interstate Crisis Initiation, Steve S. Sin
While The Enemy Is Preoccupied : A Distractionary Theory Of Interstate Crisis Initiation, Steve S. Sin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study examines the implications of distraction theoretically and empirically, with a focus on the effects of external distraction on the likelihood of interstate crisis initiation. To this end, I develop the Distractionary Theory of Interstate Crisis Initiation and conduct empirical tests on the theoretical models to determine the impact of distraction on interstate crisis initiation.
Impact Of Employment Barriers On Individuals With Criminal Records : An Econometric Evaluation Of Criminal Background Checks In New York, Garima Siwach
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Individuals with criminal records face significant barriers to employment, -- a concern which has become stronger in an era of widespread criminal background checks. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has recently drawn attention to the need to balance employers' concerns about the potential risk of hiring such individuals, with increasing employment opportunities for individuals with criminal records, particularly if they are low risk. Despite a large number of individuals with criminal records in the United States working age population, there has been no research to demonstrate the implications of such background checks used for employment determination. This dissertation consists …
The Partners Of Transgender People : Gender, Sexuality, And Embodiment In Relationships Through Transition, Carey Jean Sojka
The Partners Of Transgender People : Gender, Sexuality, And Embodiment In Relationships Through Transition, Carey Jean Sojka
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In this dissertation, I explore the gendered, sexual, and embodied negotiations of the social world by thirty-five partners of transgender people as their significant other experienced various aspects of gender transition. This research shows the ways that people peripheral to a gender transition can be intimately impacted by it. Participants in this study demonstrated shifted understandings of their own and their partner’s gender and sexuality (i.e. Jason Cromwell’s (1999) transsituated perspective), as well as shifted understandings of gender and sexuality on a structural level, thus expanding our understanding of transgender studies by addressing how the perspectives of intimate partners of …
Music Social Tagging As A Validation Tool For The Frbr Conceptual Model, Kabel Nathan Stanwicks
Music Social Tagging As A Validation Tool For The Frbr Conceptual Model, Kabel Nathan Stanwicks
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The International Federation of Library Associations developed its Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) without performing user testing to ensure that the model would meet the needs of professionals and users. Analyzing user-generated social tags in relation to FRBR entities and attributes will help determine if the layperson describes objects in a manner that conforms to the FRBR conceptual model. Number one songs from the weekly Billboard Hot 100 charts from 1958 through 2013 were randomly sampled, tags associated with the sampled songs were pulled from the last.fm Web site, and tags were analyzed to determine their relation to FRBR …
Effects Of Brief Mindfulness Practice On Perceptions Of Therapist Empathy, Self-Awareness, And The Real Relationship, Marianne Laura Stone
Effects Of Brief Mindfulness Practice On Perceptions Of Therapist Empathy, Self-Awareness, And The Real Relationship, Marianne Laura Stone
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The present study was designed to extend the psychotherapy literature on the benefits of therapist mindfulness practice. Three factors related to the therapist’s way of being (Fife, Whiting, Bradford, & Davis, 2014) were reasoned to be influenced by a mindfulness exercise practiced by the therapist immediately before beginning a therapy session. It was hypothesized that mindfulness practice, compared to no mindfulness, would result in (a) the client rating the therapist as more empathic on the Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory Form OS-Emp+ (Barrett-Lennard, 2015); (b) the therapist experiencing less hindering self-awareness during the session, as indicated by scores on the Hindering Self-Awareness …
Protection And Empowerment For Indonesian Female Migrant Domestic Workers, Rosita Tandos
Protection And Empowerment For Indonesian Female Migrant Domestic Workers, Rosita Tandos
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study explores the issue of transnational domestic work. There are three main points discussed: first, factors influencing the women’s decisions to work overseas; second, six stages of transnational domestic work including the recruitment process, training program, placement and signing the employment contract, working overseas, finishing the contract, and travelling back home); third, the women’s perspectives on solutions to the problems. Using a human capabilities approach, empowerment and feminist theoretical frameworks, the study examined whether being a migrant female domestic worker contributes positively to a woman’s and her family’s life.
Evolution Of Lemur Pelage Color Variation, Amanda Nicole Spriggs
Evolution Of Lemur Pelage Color Variation, Amanda Nicole Spriggs
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation investigates the selective pressures that may be driving variation in pelage color patterns in Eulemur, Varecia, and Propithecus. This is addressed by exploring the relationship between the lemur pelage colors and ecological variables, such as habitat type, predation pressures, visibility variables, and level of sympatry. The following model is presented here to describe the evolutionary mechanisms that are thought to be maintaining pelage coloration in lemurs: Pelage color and pattern are potentially used to (1) signal to conspecifics information such as mate quality, (2) signal to congenerics species identity, and (3) avoid signaling the individual’s presence to predators. …

Understanding Trait-Turnover Relationships : An Examination Of The Utility Of Holland's Congruence Theory And The Riasec Typology, Sarah Rebecca Strahan
Understanding Trait-Turnover Relationships : An Examination Of The Utility Of Holland's Congruence Theory And The Riasec Typology, Sarah Rebecca Strahan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The goal of the current study is to improve our understanding of the relationship between personality and employee turnover. Research is reviewed to demonstrate that after decades of research we still know very little about the role of personality in turnover. As a result, many researchers have called for new approaches to improve our understanding of the relationship between personality and turnover (Griffeth, Hom, & Gaertner, 2000; Hom & Griffeth, 1995; Russell, 2013). One approach that has received little attention is examining whether job context matters –that is, do the traits that predict employee turnover depend on the particular job. …
The Cost Of Inconsistent Supervisor Treatment On Psychological Detachment And Daily Home Affect : A Multilevel Mediation Study, Yi-Ren Wang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
With the assumption that the more justice the better, studies in the past have overlooked the implications of the consistency in daily justice experiences. Interpersonal justice especially tends to be associated with frequent fluctuations on the daily basis among the justice dimensions. Drawing on uncertainty management theory (Van den Bos & Lind, 2002; Van den Bos, 2001), the author argued that the uncertainty and the difficulty in consolidating a sense of justice from inconsistent fairness treatments can make people engage in sense-making or rumination after work. Hence, the purpose of the study was to investigate the potential negative spillover impact …
A Swot Analysis Of Community Policing As A Reform Schema For The Egyptian National Police To Counter Violent Extremism, Daniel Waddington Waddington
A Swot Analysis Of Community Policing As A Reform Schema For The Egyptian National Police To Counter Violent Extremism, Daniel Waddington Waddington
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Like much of the Middle East and Africa, Egypt has been experiencing increasing incidents of extremist violence and terrorism in recent years. However, an effective methodology for addressing this violence has not been identified. One approach that has been promoted internationally is countering violent extremism through community policing.
State Adoptions Of Racial Profiling Laws : Exploring Functional, Social, And Political Determinants, Dean William Weld
State Adoptions Of Racial Profiling Laws : Exploring Functional, Social, And Political Determinants, Dean William Weld
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In recent decades, racial profiling has been one of the most controversial issues in American policing. Estimates using national survey data reveal that approximately 32 million Americans report being victims of racial profiling. Federal legislation to prohibit racial profiling has been repeatedly introduced in Congress, but has not yet been enacted. In the absence of federal law to prohibit profiling, many states have adopted laws to address concerns about racial profiling within their borders. These laws encompass a variety of approaches to the problem, including prohibiting profiling, collecting data on the race and ethnicity of stopped drivers, and establishing procedures …
The Impact Of Stress On Steroid Hormones And Cue Reactivity In Smokers And Gamblers, Stephanie Elaine Wemm
The Impact Of Stress On Steroid Hormones And Cue Reactivity In Smokers And Gamblers, Stephanie Elaine Wemm
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Addictions, both substance and behavioral, have been conceptualized as having similar biopsychosocial processes with different opportunistic expressions (Shaffer et al., 2004). Biological processes such as the hormonal response to stress as measured by cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and the ratio of the DHEA/cortisol may be among the variables underlying the disposition to develop an addictive disorder, regardless of whether it is a substance-based or a so-called behavioral addiction. The current study aimed to examine whether physiological and psychological reactions to stress are similar in high-frequency smokers and gamblers. The subjective (urges, cravings) and physiological responses (skin conductance and heart rate) of …
Immigration And Victimization : Applications Of Criminological Concepts To The Lesser-Known Side Of The Immigration And Crime Nexus, Allen W.C.P. Wong
Immigration And Victimization : Applications Of Criminological Concepts To The Lesser-Known Side Of The Immigration And Crime Nexus, Allen W.C.P. Wong
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In recent decades, scholarly interest on immigration and crime has been on the rise. This increase in interest has even recently produced an academic consensus on the structural-level relationship between immigration and crime: on average, changes in immigration levels do not disproportionately increase crime rates. However, what is less explored in the literature is the individual-level relationship between immigration and criminal victimization, and specifically, the role played by criminological variables among generations of immigrant ethnic groups and their victimization experiences.
Latino/A Artist Educators (Laes) And Their Role In Creating And Sustaining Alternative Democratic Spaces In Miami, Deborah Therese Woeckner Saavedra
Latino/A Artist Educators (Laes) And Their Role In Creating And Sustaining Alternative Democratic Spaces In Miami, Deborah Therese Woeckner Saavedra
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This exploratory study utilizes a qualitative, ethnographic approach to locate and contextualize Latino/a Artist Educators (LAEs) in Miami, Florida. Foundational and cutting-edge, it brings together many distinct perspectives to illuminate the power and promise of a newly imagined yet group of individuals to build and sustain alternative democratic spaces. Building on critical educators Paolo Freire, bell hooks, Henry Giroux and Howard Zinn, as well as extending the framework of critical theorists Gloria Anzaldúa, Cornel West and others, this research begins to sketch the influence of the LAEs interviewed in Miami from 2003-2013. As a sociocultural ethnographic study positioned at the …
Acculturation, Enculturation, Stigma, And Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help Among Eastern Europeans In The U.S, Andi Xhihani
Acculturation, Enculturation, Stigma, And Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help Among Eastern Europeans In The U.S, Andi Xhihani
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Although approximately 2.1 million Eastern European immigrants are presently living in the U.S (Migration Policy Institute [MPI], 2011), this population has received little attention in the mental health field. Eastern European immigrants face many challenges to adapting to a new a culture, yet their process of acculturating has received little attention in counseling research. Based on Berry’s (1980) bidirectional model of acculturation as a framework, the present study examined the relationships of acculturation, enculturation, gender, and stigma of mental illness on Eastern European immigrants’ attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. It was hypothesized that gender and stigma would moderate the …
The Relationship Between Supervisor Supportive Behavior And Perceived Organizational Support : Test Of Mediator And Moderator Variables, Wei Zhuang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A growing body of evidence suggests that perceived organizational support (POS) associates with varies outcomes (employee well-being, performance, orientation toward organization). Current study contributes to the growing literature on perceived organizational support by proposing and testing the possible attributional heuristics employee engaged in to develop perceived organizational support. Study tests the indirect effect of supervisor supportive behaviors on employee attitudes toward supervisor and organization mediated by perceived supervisor support and perceived organizational support in sequence as well as the moderation effects of supervisor power, workload, and organization environmental turbulence on the relationship between supervisor supportive behaviors and perceived support. The …
Three Perspectives On Social Equity And Public Health Emergency Preparedness And Response Policy, Lucila M. Zamboni
Three Perspectives On Social Equity And Public Health Emergency Preparedness And Response Policy, Lucila M. Zamboni
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In the past 20 years, large-scale disasters have generated economic loss of $660 billion in the United States. Research has identified that low income individuals and economically vulnerable communities are at heightened risk and often experience disadvantages in access to public services during emergencies. Public administration literature has claimed that social equity should be included as a consideration together with economic and efficiency principles when formulating and implementing public policy. Yet there has been limited empirical research that follows this premise. The three studies that comprise this dissertation are guided by one overarching research question: which socioeconomic characteristics at the …
Lobbying To Lawsuits : Optimistic Biases And Tactical Transitions In The Movement For Lgbt Equality, Katherine Zuber
Lobbying To Lawsuits : Optimistic Biases And Tactical Transitions In The Movement For Lgbt Equality, Katherine Zuber
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This research examines the question of strategic choice in the context of the gay and lesbian rights movement. Although social movements often combine legislative, electoral and legal strategies to effect change, systematic legal efforts on behalf of gay rights did not emerge until well after a concerted lobbying and legislative campaign arose. Why did a politically powerless group seeking rights turn to litigation much later than we might have expected? A targeted case study of gay activism in Boston confirms that political opportunity is an important external factor that shapes strategic choice. However, the impact of these structural factors is …
