Social networking is a hugely popular and fast-growing online activity for young people in Ireland. In the EU Kids Online survey, while SNS use was not the most frequently mentioned online activity (‘watching video clips’ and ‘playing computer games’ were the most often cited items), it features across all age groups, and particularly so for teenagers.

Online activities for 9-16 year olds in Ireland are substantially below European norms leaving many opportunities unexplored.

57% of young people don’t go beyond the second step of a ‘ladder of opportunities’.

Cluster analysis shows that ‘a low use, low risk’ pattern to be the most prominent followed by a “moderate-use, entertainment and communication- oriented” use of the internet.

Young people’s digital skills are closer to the European average though less than half express confidence in their own skills.

The media effects tradition occupies a hugely influential and dominant role within mainstream communications research. It is unquestionably the longest running tradition within the field of audience studies, spanning nearly its entire history, yet it continues to divide opinion, both methodologically and with regard to its fundamental approach towards the study of media audiences. Its influence extends well beyond the academy, and the powerful influence exerted by its research agenda on public and political understanding of the impact of media is perhaps one of its most significant achievements.

The dominant discourse of media literacy policy espouses an ethical individualism within the digital media environment in which the source of moral values and principles, and the basis of ethical evaluation, is the individual. In this perspective, even vulnerable citizens such as children and young people, who tend to be in the vanguard of new media adoption, are required to negotiate the risks and opportunities of the online world with diminishing degrees of institutional support from trusted information sources. Critical Media Literacy (CML) is a matter of major public importance. The skill-set of CML is increasingly recognised at national and European level as essential to citizenship and to a healthy democracy. Attempts to foster Media Literacy have been a feature of Irish education for over thirty years. Extensive curriculum reform has taken place to ensure that opportunities for studying the media are available across the primary and secondary curriculum.
