Examined the extent to which fear of success (FOS) moderates effects of choice and task outcomes on intrinsic motivation, causal attribution, and subsequent choice behavior. 139 undergraduates worked either on puzzles of their choice or puzzles that were assigned to them and were then informed that they had performed either better or worse than the majority of other Ss. Measures of intrinsic motivation (task engagement during a free-choice period) and of attribution for performance were obtained. Ss then indicated how much choice they wanted to have over similar tasks that they were going to perform. Finally, Ss completed the Fear …

Developmental Changes In Decoding Discrepant And Nondiscrepant Nonverbal Cues, Miron Zuckerman, Bella M. Depaulo, Peter Blanck, Robert Rosenthal

Examined developmental changes in responses to consistent and discrepant video and audio nonverbal cues. A videotaped Nonverbal Discrepancy Test was administered to 121 males and 129 females aged 9-15 yrs. The discrepancy test measured (a) decoding accuracy--the extent to which Ss are able to identify affects (positivity and dominance) from visual (facial and body) cues and audio (content-filtered and random-spliced) cues--and (b) video primacy--the extent to which Ss are more influenced by video (face or body) than by audio cues. Results show that older Ss were more accurate at decoding affects than were younger Ss, particularly dominance-submission cues. Video primacy …

At first glance the Syracuse University Audio Archive and Edison Rerecording Laboratory looks like an antique shop. Old phonographs, cylinders, posters of a by-gone era are everywhere; there is even a relief of the Victor dog. But there are great differences in action and atmosphere from an antique shop, for at the Archive the "relics" are living machines, and the ancient cylinders are taking on a modern, full-toned life. In this article, Howard L. Applegate describes and includes an excerpt of the autobiography of John Wilkins, a shop owner in Pennsylvania during the American Revolution period who became a militia captain. Instead of detailing the colonial militia of the time, Wilkins related how militia members often took on significant financial burdens in order to keep the regiment intact, and lamented the rampant devaluation, inflation and speculation that occurred during this turbulent period in American history.
