Population Health Research Brief Series

Political polarization poses considerable risks to well-being. Both ideological polarization (“extremification” of policy positions and ideological orientations) and affective polarization (out-party hate) have increased over the past several decades with detrimental effects on public health. This brief summarizes the impacts of political polarization on public health in the U.S., highlighting the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study on the health risks of polarization. The authors show that, in the United States, one of the strongest predictors of COVID-19 prevention behaviors, such as social distancing and vaccination, was political partisanship. Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government relaxed the physical presence requirements for applicants of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to reduce the associated health risks for pregnant women, new mothers, and young children. Experts consider in-person application requirements an administrative burden that can constrain access to social services, but the causality of specific burdens on WIC has not previously been shown. This brief summarizes findings from a study that compared WIC caseload data collected across 738 counties in 10 U.S. states between January 2019 and May 2021 to determine how …

Constitutional democracy is in crisis, and threats to free speech are a substantial part of the story. This paper describes some key recurring patterns of free speech conflict under conditions of democratic backsliding, with special attention to the role of European, Brazilian, and U.S. courts in responding to such conflicts. In particular, it reviews whether and to what extent courts serve as reliable democratic guardrails when state actors seek to restrict the speech of opposition politicians and protesters, relatively powerless minority groups, and independent journalists and scholars. In October 2024, U.S. employment grew modestly by 12,000, and the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%. Veteran unemployment slightly increased to 2.8%, with post-9/11 veteran unemployment rising to 3.2%, though trends varied across different age and demographic groups. Notably, the unemployment rate for younger veterans (18-24) dropped significantly, while Black or African American veterans saw a sharp rise, and Hispanic veterans experienced a decline.

Research has consistently demonstrated the presence and severity of racial health disparities in the U.S., particularly for Black Americans. Many of the root causes of these disparities are complex and are associated with various forms of structural discrimination. This study examines the health experiences of veterans of color, particularly their interactions in the VA and Military Health system to better understand racial/ethnic disparities across disease burden, mortality, and indicators of patient healthcare experiences. This mixed-methods study included an online survey (n=219) and virtual focus groups and one-on-one interviews (n=17). Moreover, these technological advancements have provided opportunities for organizations to implement an informed learning approach in crisis responses. The interconnectedness and complementary aspects of three theories within crisis management, including the situational crisis communication theory's base crisis response strategies, image repair theory's corrective action, and discourse of renewal theory's organizational learning, were assessed and integrated into a proposed framework for understanding a comprehensive approach to crisis management. Disabled people are a population with health disparities, so accurate data on disability status is required to fully understand and mitigate these disparities. The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is the primary survey used to monitor the health of the U.S. population. Currently, the NHIS uses the Washington Group Short Set on Functioning (WGSS) questions to create a disability indicator that can be used to estimate the size of the disabled population and ascertain the severity of a person’s level of functional limitations. This study used data on U.S. adults ages 18+ from the 2010-2018 NHIS to determine how accurately …

This research review highlights findings from a study of U.S. veteran voting participation. This study finds that military service is associated with greater voter participation. Holding socioeconomic and demographic characteristics constant, veterans are more likely to vote than non-veterans. Non-Hispanic white and African American veterans are more likely to vote than their non-veteran peers and Hispanic veterans with lower educational attainment are more likely to vote than Hispanic non-veterans but the effect of military service on the propensity to vote decreases as educational attainment increases. Catholic Subject Headings, a list of subject headings focused on describing and representing Catholic belief, ritual, and culture, was first published in 1942 by the Catholic Library Association for use in Catholic libraries. The creation of a cataloging tool solely to represent and serve a distinct religious population allows for an imposition of religious worldview by those utilizing Catholic Subject Headings onto the materials they interacted with. The need for a specifically Catholic cataloging system is also revealing of the complex tensions between Catholics and Protestants and within the American Catholic community in 20^th century America.

Schools play an important role in safety and stability for refugee students, including the Ukrainian school-age children who fled the war after Russia’s invasion in 2022. This brief summarizes findings from a study that used data from 24 interviews conducted in 2022 with teachers and mothers of Ukrainian refugee children attending elementary schools in Poland to examine the impact of forced migration on academic progress and socio-emotional well-being of refugee students. The authors find war and forced migration disrupt children’s school routines, but that schools can foster positive outcomes by teaching in the children’s native language, using cultural assistants, and …

Standards are integral to engineers’ information needs, yet their complexity and uniqueness poses an instruction and outreach challenge. This presentation details the redesign of a library guide on standards undertaken at the RIT Libraries. The focus of the redesign process was on effectively transmitting information on standards to the RIT community at the point of need, detailing what standards are available through library and other sources, how other standards can be requested and acquired, and how engineers and engineering students can work with standards.

Health science librarians frequently engage in discussions about the proper assignment of systematic reviews for graduate students. Such reviews are often assigned as a way to build the research skills students will need in a clinical environment and provide them with a publishable deliverable. In the assignment of these reviews, it has become apparent that health science faculty are often not familiar with the standardized methodologies required. From 2021 to 2023, food insecurity in the United States increased from 10.2% to 13.5%, and food inflation rose to nearly 20%. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - the largest food assistance program, in the U.S. is funded and governed by the Farm Bill – a multi-year federal omnibus bill that provides agriculture and nutrition program funding. The 2018 Farm Bill expired on September 30, 2024, and while funding for SNAP has been extended through a Continuing Resolution, program reauthorization is needed. Negotiations on a new Farm Bill have included SNAP proposals to limit state discretion on work requirements …

In September 2024, U.S. employment rose by 254,000, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.1%. Veterans experienced notable improvements, with overall unemployment dropping to 2.7% from 3.5% in August, and specific age and demographic groups seeing varying trends—such as a decrease in unemployment for younger veterans and a significant drop for female veterans. While some subgroups, like Hispanic veterans, had higher unemployment rates than their nonveteran peers, Black veterans saw lower unemployment than their counterparts.

This paper builds on language, media, information, digital, and cultural literacy to offer a definition of social media literacy that addresses the abilities needed to be an engaged, informed, ethical, and responsible social media user. This infographic highlights key findings from The Military-Connected Entrepreneurship Ecosystem: Growth, Empowerment & Connectivity Summit, funded by Walmart. The summit addressed key challenges faced by military-connected entrepreneurs, including access to corporate procurement, ecosystem integration, capability development, and corporate engagement strategies. Held at the Veteran EDGE Conference in Dallas, TX, the summit brought together 13 corporate and business ecosystem partners and 51 military-connected business owners to discuss opportunities and challenges in the private sector.

The Veterans Education Task Force, funded by the Veteran Reconnect Grant and led by Syracuse University's IVMF with guidance from the Tennessee Board of Regents, evaluated veteran education strategies from 2020-2023. Their assessment, involving surveys and data from 39 TBR institutions, found strong institutional commitment but highlighted issues with identifying and supporting student veterans. Many institutions are developing veteran-focused programs but still lack comprehensive plans and resources. Key needs include better faculty/staff training and improved systems for identifying and supporting veterans.
