The recycling of plastic is a critical informal economy in Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slums located in the heart of Mumbai. Waste from dumping grounds is manually collected, sorted and prepared by recyclers who transform trash into a commodity to be sold back into the city as a substance with value. As part of top-down efforts to redevelop Dharavi’s valuable land with condominium towers, the Mumbai government has tarnished the industry’s image by labelling it as “polluting,” and has increased the cost of utilities such as electricity in an effort to drive it out of the community. The Institute for Veteran and Military Families (IVMF) conducted a pilot evaluation of Travis Manion Foundation’s Character Does Matter (CDM) program. The evaluation measured the impact of character and leadership education for youth—aged 12-18-- and identified key factors in a student’s success. Additionally, this evaluation identified areas to improve to maximize the impact for youth. Pilot survey data suggests the program has a positive effect on young adults’ attitudes toward both positive and negative behaviors. We found that that school aged young adults who participated in a CDM program had significant increases in caring, educational expectations, and prosocial attitudes. In …

The Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) conducted an evaluation to assess the effectiveness of Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) initiatives on improving the level of thriving and well-being among participating veterans, families of the fallen, and civilian members. For this study, the evaluation team used the Brief Inventory of Thriving (BIT) scale to determine the effect that program participation may have on individual thriving and well-being, in addition to supplementary questions about health, leadership, and community engagement. These measures were deployed as part of TMF’s first Annual Survey. Across 5 TMF programs, the IVMF evaluation found that participating in …

In 2010, the Library of Congress started archiving every public Tweet after receiving a “starter” archive of Tweets from the first four years of Twitter’s existence (2006- 2010); however, the Library could not keep up with the volume of Tweets being produced, so it halted the program at the beginning of 2018.

The percentage of kindergarteners being granted exemption from vaccination is growing across the U.S. as parents increasingly request exemptions for philosophical reasons. During the 2017-18 school year, 2.2% of kindergartners were exempted from vaccination. This is up from 1.6% during the 2011-12 school year.

SU Libraries are developing a programmatic approach to information literacy.
By aligning SUL’s information literacy student learning outcomes with relevant outcomes in academic programs, the information literacy librarian can be strategic in moving the program forward. The alignment was completed by analyzing all program learning outcomes in Tk20 for themes related to information literacy knowledge practices and dispositions articulated by the SU Libraries Information Literacy program.

Many thousands of palm leaf manuscripts, in South Asia and elsewhere, are currently in danger of being lost due to physical deterioration. These manuscripts contain irreplaceable cultural, religious, scientific, and artistic works. Palm leaf manuscripts, which can be centuries old, are found in numerous private collections, temples, monasteries, libraries and museums. The sheer number and wide dispersal of palm leaf manuscripts provide significant challenges to conservation and preservation, including both ethical and technical considerations. A literature search and examination of palm leaf manuscripts shed light on the urgent need to proceed worldwide along two fronts simultaneously: rapid digitization of critical …

The Effects Of Eitc Exposure In Childhood On Marriage And Early Childbearing, Katherine Michelmore, Leonard M. Lopoo

This study analyzes the effect of exposure to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) in childhood on marriage and childbearing in early adulthood. Results suggest that exposure in childhood leads women to delay marriage and first births in early adulthood (ages 18-25), but not men. These results have implications for the well-being of both individuals exposed to the EITC in childhood as well as their future children. In addition, because childless adults cannot claim the EITC until age 25, our back-ofthe-envelope calculations suggest that these delays likely save up to $199 million annually in social welfare costs.

Structural Changes In Heterogeneous Panels With Endogenous Regressors, Badi Baltagi, Qu Feng, Chihwa Kao

This paper extends Pesaran (2006) common correlated e¤ects (CCE) by allowing for endogenous regressors in large heterogeneous panels with unknown common structural changes in slopes and error factor structure. Since endogenous regressors and structural breaks are often encountered in empirical studies with large panels, this extension makes the Pesaran’s (2006) CCE approach empirically more appealing. In addition to allowing for slope heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence, we find that Pesaran’s CCE approach is also valid when dealing with unobservable factors in the presence of endogenous regressors and structural changes in slopes and error factor loadings. Discussion platform, Reddit, is the third most visited website in the US. People can post their questions on this platform to get varying opinions from fellow users, which in turn might also influence their behavior and choices. Wearables are becoming widely adopted, yet challenges persist in their effective long term use because of technical and device related, or personal issues. This research brief reports on findings from a recent research on errors in cause of death reporting on death certificates for individuals with disabilities. Analyzing the death certificates of over 30,000 adults with developmental disabilities who died between 2012 and 2016, Landes and his collaborators found that nearly half of death certificates identify a developmental disability itself as the direct cause of death for individuals with disabilities.

“Lotta Food, No Money”: Syracuse’S Poor Have Challenges That Are Much Bigger Than Food Access, Katie Mott

Food access is a central target for addressing poor health in low-income communities nationwide. A 2019 study found that the recent closure of a local family grocery store was a major concern for local elected officials and leaders of nonprofit agencies. However, people living in extreme poverty do not view food access as their most important health challenge. Finding safe and affordable housing, navigating the social welfare system, and finding employment are seen as larger concerns.

This paper studies testing of shifts in a time trend panel data model with serially correlated error component disturbances, without any prior knowledge of whether the error term is stationary or nonstationary. This is done in case the shift is known as well as unknown. Following Vogelsang (1997) in the time series literature, we propose a Wald type test statistic that uses a fixed effects feasible generalized least squares (FE-FGLS) estimator derived in Baltagi, et al. (2014). The proposed test has a Chi-square limiting distribution and is valid for both I (0) and I (1) errors. The finite sample size …

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Material evidence of a local drawn-glass beadmaking industry was uncovered in the old section of Rouen, France, in 1869 during street construction. Composed of production tubes and wasters (most of which exhibit evidence of a speo heat rounding), the material is attributed to the early part of the 17th century. It is significant as many of the recorded varieties have correlatives at archaeological sites in eastern North America occupied during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. These include a 7-layer chevron, Nueva Cadiz varieties, and frit-core beads. It is, therefore, quite possible that some of the American specimens may …

The archaeological study of glass bead proveniences raises theoretical questions regarding the idea of “beadmaking centers” as defined by typological, technological, and geochemical means. Also important for defining beadmaking centers are historical sources in various languages. In the 19th century, French scholars interested in glassmaking in Normandy noted beadmaking ca. 1590-1635. Their publications show a rural cottage industry in the county of Eu and the forest of Brotonne, and an urban guild of patenôtriers in Rouen. While the historical data mostly show the production and export of rosary beads, the Normandy “beadmaking center” coincides with a major outfitting region of …
