The Emergence Of Taiwanese Nationalism: A Preliminary Work On An Approach To Interactive Episodic Discourse, Weider Shu Jan 1998

The Emergence Of Taiwanese Nationalism: A Preliminary Work On An Approach To Interactive Episodic Discourse, Weider Shu

Weider Shu

Examines the emergence of separatist nationalism in Taiwan, suggesting an alternative explanatory model. Taiwan's modern history is traced, focusing on the dominant ideologies imposed by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), counterideologies advocated by opposition forces, the dynamic relationships between state & opposition forces, rise of democracy, & appearance of a more moderate version of nationalism. The advantages & shortcoming of separatist nationalism theories of primordialism, internal colonialism, & constructionism are described, & a more consistent framework focusing on interactive episodic discourse is introduced. This approach sees the "making of nation" as a "crafting identity" process shaped by socioeconomic & political …

Recompas Y Recontras. Un Análisis De La Violencia Política En La Nicaragua Posrevolucionaria., Salvador Marti I Puig Jan 1998

Recompas Y Recontras. Un Análisis De La Violencia Política En La Nicaragua Posrevolucionaria., Salvador Marti I Puig

Salvador Marti i Puig

Coercion Justified?-Evaluating The Training In Community Living Model (The Original Assertive Community Treatment Model) A Dissertation, Tomi Gomory

Tomi Gomory

This dissertation examines the research and theory offered for Programs of Assertive Community Treatment, the model that is supported by Institutional Psychiatry as the most well validated and best model of intervention applicable to the psychiatric population labeled the Severely and Persistently Mentally Ill. Although this program has been researched for over 25 yrs. and the extensive literature on this model claims to have established it’s efficacy on both the systems and patient level, the findings of my critical review dispute these claims based on the examination of the empirical evidence of all available randomized controlled trials of this intervention …

Domestic Partnership And Same-Sex Relationships: A Marketplace Innovation And A Less Than Perfect Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer Jan 1998

Domestic Partnership And Same-Sex Relationships: A Marketplace Innovation And A Less Than Perfect Institutional Choice, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

The struggle for the recognition and protection of same-sex relationships is at the forefront of the contemporary gay and lesbian civil rights agenda. Whereas the push for same-sex marriage and parenting rights has met with mixed results in the courts and the legislatures, an impressive array of organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, colleges, nonprofit corporations, and municipalities, now extend benefits to the same-sex partners of their employees. This level of success raises a provocative question regarding the potential role of institutional employers in the larger on the agenda for progressive social change. Domestic partnership benefits are a creature of the …

Monuments And The Past In Early Anglo-Saxon England,, Howard M. R. Williams Jan 1998

Monuments And The Past In Early Anglo-Saxon England,, Howard M. R. Williams

Howard M. R. Williams

Recent research on both old and new excavation data from Anglo-Saxon burial sites reveals a widespread and frequent practice of reusing monuments of earlier periods. Both Roman and prehistoric structures provided the focus of cemeteries, burial groups and single graves between the late fifth and early eighth centuries AD. It is argued that this practice was central to the symbolism of Anglo-Saxon mortuary practices, and was important for the construction and negotiation of origin myths, identities and social structures.

Old And New Theories Of Industry Clusters, Edward J. Feser Jan 1998

Old And New Theories Of Industry Clusters, Edward J. Feser

Edward J Feser

The paper reviews the broad range of theories and ideas that constitute, often implicitly, the logic behind strategic cluster policies. The title of the paper notwithstanding, there is no theory of industry clusters, per se. Even Porter’s (1990) seminal contribution is more a theory of firm competitiveness than clusters. There is, instead, a variety of older and newer theories of 1) the interrelationships between economic actors that clusters describe, and 2) the implications of such interrelationships for economic growth and development. Industry clusters have proven a useful way of characterizing webs of relationships between and among firms and other institutions. …

Black's Theory On The Behavior Of Law Revisited Iii: Law As More Or Less Governmental Social Control, Kam C. Wong Jan 1998

Black's Theory On The Behavior Of Law Revisited Iii: Law As More Or Less Governmental Social Control, Kam C. Wong

Kam C. Wong

In 1976 Donald Black introduced a scientific social theory on The Behavior of Law. Black defines law as “governmental social control.” In 1997, Wong restated Black’s concept of law as “more or less governmental social conrol.” Law as more or less governmental social control exists when the government endorses private social control activities or otherwise delegates social control powers to private parties. This research used Wong’s restatement of Black’s concept of law to investigate the law enforcement role and functions of the Strike Committee during the Canton-Hong Kong strike (1925-1926). It found that during the Canton-Hong Kong strike the KMT …

The Use Of Replacement Workers In Union Contract Negotiations: The U.S. Experience, 1980-1989, Peter Cramton, Joseph Tracy Jan 1998

The Use Of Replacement Workers In Union Contract Negotiations: The U.S. Experience, 1980-1989, Peter Cramton, Joseph Tracy

Peter Cramton

It is argued in many circles that a structural change occurred in U.S. collective bargaining in the 1980s. Strike incidence declined, dispute incidence increased, and the composition of disputes shifted away from strikes and toward holdouts. We investigate the extent to which the hiring of replacement workers can account for these changes. For a sample of over 300 major strikes since 1980, we estimate the likelihood of replacements being hired. We find that the risk of replacement is lower for bargaining units with more experienced workers, and declines during tight labor markets. The composition of disputes shifts away from strikes …

Auctions And Takeovers, Peter Cramton Jan 1998

Auctions And Takeovers, Peter Cramton

Peter Cramton

Under Delaware law (the predominant corporate law in the US), when a potential acquirer makes a serious bid for a target, the target's board of directors is required to act as would "auctioneers charged with getting the best price for the stock-holders at a sale of the company." (Revlon v. MacAndrews & Forbes, 173). The target's board may not use defensive tactics that destroy the auction process and must attempt to seek higher bids. Similarly, the Williams Act requires takeover bids to remain open for at least 20 business days on the grounds that the delay facilitates auctions. This preference …

Architecture And The Production Of Postcard Images: Tradition Vs. Critical Regionalism In Curitiba, Clara Irazabal Jan 1998

Architecture And The Production Of Postcard Images: Tradition Vs. Critical Regionalism In Curitiba, Clara Irazabal

Clara Irazabal

In Curitiba, Brazil, the building of architectural monuments that make use of a direct vocabulary of tradition has been one of the major means to construct the city image in the last two decades. The government of Curitiba has plagued the city with foreign-styled landmarks mostly based on selective samples of European traditions. Such attempts strive to construct a city image that creates a sense that Curitiba has a heritage connected with the European established traditions. Examples of those ethnic landmarks are the Polonaise Memorial, and the German, Italian and Portuguese parks. Such monuments depict a cosmopolitan, international city, freed …
