Desecrating The Ark: Animal Abuse And The Law's Role In Prevention, Margit Livingston Sep 2001

Desecrating The Ark: Animal Abuse And The Law's Role In Prevention, Margit Livingston

Margit Livingston

In this Article, Professor Livingston examines the history and philosophy of animal cruelty laws and also surveys the scope and content of contemporary American anti-cruelty statutes. She explores, moreover, a substantial body of social science data that suggest a correlation between the commission of animal abuse and a propensity for other violent behavior. From her survey of current law, Professor Livingston concludes that lawmakers should amend animal cruelty statutes to provide for mandatory psychological treatment for youthful offenders and harsher penalties for older and habitual offenders. She observes that animal abuse as a crime not only affects the animals targeted …

The Return Of Assimilation? Changing Perspectives On Immigration And Its Sequels In France, Germany, And The United States, Rogers Brubaker Jun 2001

The Return Of Assimilation? Changing Perspectives On Immigration And Its Sequels In France, Germany, And The United States, Rogers Brubaker

Rogers Brubaker

This article argues that the massive differentialist turn of the last third of the twentieth century may have reached its peak, and that one can discern signs of a modest “return of assimilation”. The article presents evidence of this from the domain of public discourse in France, public policy in Germany, and scholarly research in the US. Yet what has “returned” is not the old, analytically discredited and politically disreputable “assimilationist” understanding of assimilation, but a more analytically complex and normatively defensible understanding. The article concludes by specifying the ways in which the concept of assimilation has been transformed.

As far as the field of Taiwan’s political history is concerned, her overseas counterparts, especially those affiliated with the opposition movement, is probably the most ignored one. In this paper, I contend that we have to take the overseas Taiwan Independence Movement (OTIM) seriously while considering the dynamics of Taiwan’s political development due to the following reasons. (1). In terms of Taiwan’s opposition movement, her overseas counterpart was ever the most important arena for the movement as a whole. (2). There was, and still is, very strong connection between Taiwan’s opposition movement and her overseas counterpart. (3). The OTIM plays …

Narcissistic Self-Love, Male Body Objectification, And Homoeroticism In John Woos’ The Killer And Face/Off, Michele Gibney Apr 2001

Narcissistic Self-Love, Male Body Objectification, And Homoeroticism In John Woos’ The Killer And Face/Off, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

A theme of homoeroticism/sexually charged appreciation of the male body exerts itself as a clear visual in The Killer and Face/Off. In this paper, some of these homoerotic images and the theoretically gender-based reasoning behind them will be explored. In some ways, Woos’ films The Killer and Face/Off, can be “read” as both example and counterexample to masculine-feminine discussions of gendered cinema. Laura Mulvey, for instance, posits the thesis that cinema is a vision dominated by patriarchal society. Both films I will be analyzing exemplify the superior role of male societal functions; such as males in positions of authority, or …

Nafta And The Reconstruction Of U.S. Hegemony: The Raw Materials Foundations Of Economic Competitiveness, Paul Ciccantell

Paul Ciccantell

This paper argues that conflicting assessments of the impacts of free trade in North America are incomplete because they do not analyze these effects in light of the key long term U.S. goal: the reconstruction of U.S. hegemony that was under siege by Japan and Europe. The declining competitiveness of U.S. raw materials supply systems badly damaged U.S. hegemony during the 1970s and 1980s. The original U.S. strategy was to create a continental energy market to reduce overseas oil imports, guarantee access to oil and natural gas from Canada and Mexico, and reduce price instability. The evolution into broader agreements …

Illicit Drug Use, Employment, And Labor Force Participation, Michael French, M. Christopher Roebuck, Pierre Alexandre Dec 2000

Illicit Drug Use, Employment, And Labor Force Participation, Michael French, M. Christopher Roebuck, Pierre Alexandre

Michael T. French

Illicit drug use has declined among the U.S. adult population, but national surveys show the majority of illicit drug users are employed. Concern about workplace productivity, absenteeism, and safety has led many employers to establish employee assistance and drug testing programs. Given the sharp interest in workplace interventions, more information is needed about the relationships between drug use and labor market status. This study estimated the probability of employment and labor force participation for different types of drug users using nationally representative data from the 1997 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse. Results strongly indicated that chronic drug use was …

Gender And Achievement In Music Education: The View From The Classroom, Ruth Wright Dec 2000

Gender And Achievement In Music Education: The View From The Classroom, Ruth Wright

Ruth Wright Dr

This article originates from a research project investigating the effects of gender on achievement in music education in one secondary school. The study showed a correlation between gender and achievement in music with some surprising insights into possible causes of male under-achievement in education at Key Stages 3 (11–14 years) and 4 (14–16 years) generally. It is argued that because of national testing and school performance tables, the debate on male under-achievement in this country may have become so focused on core subjects that a very important link in the argument is being overlooked – a link provided by music …

Parents' Attempts At 'Protection' Do Children No Favors In Long Run, Michael E Lewyn Dec 2000

Parents' Attempts At 'Protection' Do Children No Favors In Long Run, Michael E Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

Some parents keep their children locked up inside Mommy's car and house until they learn to drive, fearing that their children will not be safe outside. But car accidents have killed far more children than pedophiles - a fact which suggest that the dangers of too little freedom may exceed the dangers of too much freedom.

Labor Supply Of Poor Residents In Metropolitan Miami, Florida: The Role Of Depression And The Co-Morbid Effects Of Substance Use, Michael T. French, Pierre K. Alexandre Dec 2000

Labor Supply Of Poor Residents In Metropolitan Miami, Florida: The Role Of Depression And The Co-Morbid Effects Of Substance Use, Michael T. French, Pierre K. Alexandre

Michael T. French

BACKGROUND: Depression represents one of the most common behavioral health problems among the workforce in the United States, with about 1 in every 20 employees experiencing this condition. A recent study estimated that in 1990 the economic costs of depressive disorders in the American workplace amounted to as much as $43 billion, with absenteeism alone accounting for $12 billion. Recently, economists have been focusing attention on the relationship between mental health and labor supply, but a lack of quality data sets containing detailed information on mental health and labor market variables represents a significant barrier to rigorous research. AIMS OF …

Feminism For The Mainstream Criminologist: An Invitation, Jeanne M. Flavin Dec 2000

Feminism For The Mainstream Criminologist: An Invitation, Jeanne M. Flavin

Jeanne M Flavin

Feminism has historically been peripheral to the study and practice of criminal justice; mainstream criminologists have not been widely exposed to feminist perspectives. This has contributed to perceptions that criminology is about men and feminism is only about women. Consequently, many criminologists and criminal justice practitioners have yet to understand, much less appreciate, the importance of feminism's contribution to criminology. To address this problem, this article explains some of the major feminist insights in the interrelated areas of epistemology, theory, methodology, and policy. Examples from the criminal justice literature are used to illustrate both the basis for feminist concerns as …

Using The Drug Abuse Screening Test (Dast-10) To Analyze Health Services Utilization And Cost For Substance Abusers In A Community-Based Setting, Michael T. French, M. Christopher Roebuck, Kerry Anne Mcgeary, Dale D. Chitwood, Clyde B. Mccoy Dec 2000

Mccoy

Michael T. French

The dual purpose of this study was to: (1) determine whether problematic drug users, defined through the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-10), exhibited differences in health services utilization and cost relative to a combined group of non-problematic drug users and non-drug users; and (2) assess whether the findings were similar to those for chronic drug users (CDUs) and injecting drug users (IDUs). Results showed that health services utilization and total cost were very similar for problematic drug users defined through quantity-frequency (i.e., CDU, IDU) and diagnostic (i.e., DAST-10) criteria. Findings suggest that quantity/frequency criteria for problematic drug use were reasonable …
