Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart Nov 2001

Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart

Jason A Snart

In his paper, "Entropy in Pynchon's 'Entropy' and Lefebvre's The Production of Space," Jason Snart examines Thomas Pynchon's short story "Entropy" for the ways in which it deals with the kinds of disorder(s) associated with entropy as a thermodynamic and informational concept. Those concepts are installed as a framework within which to consider cultural studies work like Henri Lefebfre's thought in his The Production of Space and Ludwig von Bertalanffy's general systems theory and themodynamics: disorder is rendered not as confusion, but rather as a state of potential energy and productivity and Lefebvre's and Bertalanffy's concepts serve to show how …

Creating An Instant Messaging Reference System, Jody C. Fagan, Michele Calloway

Jody C Fagan

Libraries are expanding digital references services to include chat and instant messaging. Various companies have developed systems for purchase that meet this need without requiring users to download new software or learn a new skill. These systems share many features in common, including transcript storage, sending URLs, and pushing Web pages. Several librarians at an Association of Research Libraries academic library wished to test instant messaging reference with the ability to control and experiment with different implementations of these features. This article describes the features of instant messaging reference systems and the in-house development of a system that incorporates them.

Policy brief from Community Resources For Justice

Ask anyone on the street about it and you are liable to be drawn into a lengthy conversation about, the troublesome state of housing in Urban America – high prices, low availability, and, seemingly, no relief in sight. Whether you are a student or senior citizen, construction worker or downtown professional, the search for housing in an urban center is a difficult but necessary experience.

Adolescents, The Internet And The Politics Of Gender: A Feminist Case Analysis, Meenakshi Durham Sep 2001

Adolescents, The Internet And The Politics Of Gender: A Feminist Case Analysis, Meenakshi Durham

Meenakshi Gigi Durham

This case study is based on field observation of the first hands-on Internet sessions experienced by a group of lower-income minority teenagers in an inner-city middle school. Using feminist analysis to interrogate the social dynamic within which the Interact use took place, I explore how new technologies are appropriated by adolescents as a site of social bonding. I conclude that the adolescent users' social locations in terms of gender, race, and class work to constrain Internet use to support dominant relations of power

Concealed Pseudo-Clefts, Ileana Paul Sep 2001

Concealed Pseudo-Clefts, Ileana Paul

Ileana Paul

This paper argues for a pseudo-cleft analysis of so-called clefts in Malagasy. Evidence is presented that the clefted element is in fact the matrix (copular) predicate and that the pre-suppositional clause is a headless relative in subject position. The proposed pseudo-cleft structure accounts for the focus interpretation of this construction, due to the underlying presence of a definite description in the subject position.

Transition To A Liaison Model: Teaching Faculty And Librarian Perceptions, La Loria Konata, Lyn Thaxton

Georgia State University is a culturally diverse urban institution in downtown Atlanta, with a full-time equivalent enrollment of approximately 15,000. At the heart of this urban and culturally diverse institution is the GSU Pullen Library. The library established a separate collection development department, with several subject bibliographers in the 1970s. When a new university librarian began work in October 1997, each of the five bibliographers dealt with broad subject areas, such as business and science/health science. The bibliographers worked with departmental faculty representatives, also called book chairs, to determine what was needed in the library. Another group of ten librarians …
