The Return Of Assimilation? Changing Perspectives On Immigration And Its Sequels In France, Germany, And The United States, Rogers Brubaker

This article argues that the massive differentialist turn of the last third of the twentieth century may have reached its peak, and that one can discern signs of a modest “return of assimilation”. The article presents evidence of this from the domain of public discourse in France, public policy in Germany, and scholarly research in the US. Yet what has “returned” is not the old, analytically discredited and politically disreputable “assimilationist” understanding of assimilation, but a more analytically complex and normatively defensible understanding. The article concludes by specifying the ways in which the concept of assimilation has been transformed.

As far as the field of Taiwan’s political history is concerned, her overseas counterparts, especially those affiliated with the opposition movement, is probably the most ignored one. In this paper, I contend that we have to take the overseas Taiwan Independence Movement (OTIM) seriously while considering the dynamics of Taiwan’s political development due to the following reasons. (1). In terms of Taiwan’s opposition movement, her overseas counterpart was ever the most important arena for the movement as a whole. (2). Modern Turkey has been founded on internal and international migrations. During the early Republican period (1920s and 1930s), large populations of Turkish nationals and Muslims were living outside the borders of the new country. After the First World War and the War of Independence, they were brought into the country and were involved in the reconstruction process of the new Turkish Republic, marking the beginning of this century’s Turkish Diaspora. This paper sets out to theorise the production of ‘ethnic’ and ‘national’ conflict via the complex interrelation between ‘Nation’ and ‘State’, in what is termed as the nation-state dialectic. It considers the production of ‘ethnic conflict’ and the role of nationalism, the state and class politics. It theorises the State as a social relation and as a power structure and then proceeds in linking it to the emergence of the nation-state construct. The question of ‘modernisation’ of the state in Cyprus has recently received a great deal of attention in Cypriot politics. During the last Parliamentary elections in May 2000, the question of ‘modernisation’ entered the political dictionary of the mainstream parties. All political forces professed to be ‘European’, they pledged commitment to the EU accession process and the debate over ‘modernisation’ was closely linked to the policies of harmonisation with the EU in the light of accession.
