Hybrid Organizations And The Alignment Of Interests: The Case Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac, Jonathan Koppell Jun 2001

Hybrid Organizations And The Alignment Of Interests: The Case Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac, Jonathan Koppell

Jonathan GS Koppell

This article explores the political influence of government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs). Using Congress's overhaul of the regulatory infrastructure for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as a case study, the article presents two principal findings: (1) The characteristics that distinguish government-sponsored enterprises from traditional government agencies and private companies endow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with unique political resources; and (2) the alignment of interest groups around Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is subject to strategic manipulation by the GSEs. A triangular model of this alignment is proposed and employed to analyze the legislative outcome. The case has implications for students of …

Myopia Of Health-Care Reform Using Business Models, Macinnes Kenneth, Vivian C. Mcalister

Vivian C. McAlister

Background: Health-care institutions have looked to business for models to respond to the requirement for reform. This has changed the perspective of institutions that were founded on charitable principles, and managed with liberal employment policies and deficit budgeting. Using lesions from supply-side management, hospitals are fragmenting into independent programs with demands to balance budgets regardless of the source of cost.

Methods: Costs from the institution’s perspective are compared with those of the payer (province) using an example of a proposal to reduce costs in the surgical program by buying disposable drapes.

Results: The actual cost of disposable drapes bought from …

The Status Of The Uniform Guidelines On Employee Selection Procedures: Legal Developments And Future Prospects, Andrew Ewoh, James Guseh Dec 2000

The Status Of The Uniform Guidelines On Employee Selection Procedures: Legal Developments And Future Prospects, Andrew Ewoh, James Guseh

Andrew I.E. Ewoh

This article examines the legal status of the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures from the perspectives of judicial opinions and race-norming provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1991. Specifically, the analysis provides a discussion of important U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions with special emphasis on their relevance for disparate impact theory. Because the 1991 Civil Rights Act has altered the selection procedures somewhat, the article offers implications of these changes for personnel managers or specialists and recommends modification of the Uniform Guidelines.

Innovation, Demand And Employment, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

The paper examines the link between technological change and demand and their impact on employment in manufacturing industry. The specific nature of innovation, mainly oriented towards product or process innovations, is considered, in the light of the competitive strategies of firms and industries. An interpretative model is proposed and an empirical analysis is carried out, using the data of the European Innovation Surveys for five countries. The results of cross-industry regressions show that demand, structural change and orientation toward product innovations have a positive impact on employment change in the 1990s, while the intensity of innovative expenditure (including R&D, design, …

Teoria, Metodo E Analise: As Interconexões Necessárias No Estudo Das Crianças E Das Famílias, Jonathan Tudge, Fabienne Doucet, Sherrill W. Hayes

Sherrill W. Hayes

In this article, we argue that there must be a clear and consistent connection in research between the theory that we use, the methods that we employ, and the way in which we analyze our data. This is true no matter what aspects of children and families are being studied, although we study children and their families in different cultural contexts. The theoretical approach that we use is derived from Urie Bronfenbrenner’s recent writings. His theory is an ecological and systemic theory, forcing us to examine simultaneously aspects of the developing individual, aspects of the context (immediate, distal, and historical), …
